Have you noticed a strange tension between your desire to act and your need for peace? Mars enters Taurus, its sign of detriment, placing the warrior planet in Venus’s stable, sensual domain. This is not about good or bad astrology. It is about understanding what happens when force meets flow.
Over the next six weeks, the aggressive nature of Mars must express itself through an environment designed for ease and security. Think of a bulldozer building a beautiful garden. The friction is real, but so is the potential for lasting creation.
Mars in Taurus asks you to find the courage to disturb your own peace only so you can build something more stable than before. The tension between action and serenity is not a problem to solve. It is the very ground of your next transformation.
Watch for the house in your chart that holds Taurus. That is where your effort will matter most.

Hey everyone. This is Adam Elenbaas from Nightlight Astrology [https://nightlightastrology.com/].
Happy Monday, everyone. Today we're going to take a look at Mars entering the sign of Taurus, which is the traditional sign of Mars's exile or detriment. This happens whenever you take a planet from its own ruling sign and put it in the sign opposite. So if you take Mars from Aries, where it's in its rulership, and put it in Libra, you get a similar result.
The reason for this has to do with the way that rulership schemes were set up and planetary opposites were set up relative to one another's rulerships. We'll talk about that today and give you a feel for why this can be a difficult Mars placement and what that might mean, given your horoscopes.
We're going to look through all 12 whole sign horoscopes, but we'll also talk about some of the constructive things that can come when Mars gets into this sign of Taurus, and there definitely are some good things to watch for as well. So that's our agenda for today.
Before we get into it, as always, remember to like and subscribe. The algorithm tends to privilege sensationalism. We're a pretty even-keeled spiritual place, aside from trying to play with our titles a little bit, we take a pretty even-keeled approach here. If you appreciate it, please like and subscribe, because it helps us a lot do what we're doing.
You can find transcripts, transcripts of any of these daily talks on the website, that's Nightlight Astrology.com. I'm going to take you over there, because we've got a couple of promotions to run for the day. First of all, I'm so excited, my new book is out, The Oracle Speaks.
It is a book that is about the way that astrology weaves its way into our lives. It's a collection of stories, and I intended for this book to be something that really helps us to recognize the presence of the oracle spirit, divinity, whatever you want to call it, weaving its way into our lives, often prior to knowing the language of astrology, or being able to put the language of astrology around that spiritual presence.
So it's an astrology book, but it's not an astrology book anyway. I spent a lot of time, it would mean so much to me if you check it out. Go to the shop page, click on my books, you'll see two different options. If you're in the US, please consider purchasing it from our website.
Outside of the US, you can use the Amazon link, and if you do get a copy of it, take a picture of yourself reading it somewhere, checking it out. Tag us on Instagram at Nightlight Astrology to help us get the word out. We really appreciate it. Of course, we're in promotion mode for our year one program.
Our first year course begins again in June. It starts on the 28th. Registration is open. The early bird sale is available. Need-based tuition is there if you need a little help to make it happen. We want to make sure that a sacred topic is available for everyone who wants to study it.
So, at the end of today, there's an informational video at the end of today's talk. There's an informational video telling you everything you need to know about the course. I'm super excited for it. Uranus and Pluto training this year, it's going to be an outstanding year for astrological study in general. I think so.
Anyway, stick around to check that out later. Finally, go to the events page, click on community quiet seven days a week. We have free meditation at Nightlight. Go to that community quiet tab, you'll find the schedule, a little bit about what we do, a video there from the very first meeting we had, and the Zoom link to join, as well as the password.
It's free. It's just our way of trying to give something back to the community and help you pair spiritual self-care with the content on this channel. So, on that note, I've been already receiving a lot of your feedback and really good stuff around my book. So I just want to thank you for that so much.
This is so.. it's vulnerable to share a book with the world, you know, and I love, I love this book so much, and I'm so proud of.. I don't know, just, you know, it's.. it's.. it's like you're proving to yourself that you can do something really difficult when you write a book, at least for me.
So, anyway, here's the chap, so guys, this new software program.. the affiliate links in the comments, or in the description of the video, if you want to get a good discount on the CHEP, so it's a great software program, but on that note, let's take a look at what's happening here. So, here we are, Monday, May 18, and within one day from right now, Mars will be in Taurus.
In fact, if I speed this up by just some hours, let's see exactly when does it ingress. Looks like it's about 5:45 central time this evening, Monday, May 18, so it enters the sign of Taurus. Now, let's see, how long does it stay there? Mars is about a five to six week process, typically, so about June 29.
So we're talking about, you know, like always around 40 to 50 days, and we get this gradual transit through the sign of Taurus. Now this is going to open up by next week into a square with Pluto that we'll be talking about a week from today. So I think it's good to start thinking right now about what's happening in the whole sign house of Taurus.
We're going to do some horoscopes to that effect, specifically because of how much emphasis immediately the Pluto, the Mars Pluto square, is going to have on all of us. What I want to focus on for today is where the whole sign house that you're going to notice this taking place in in your birth chart.
Just some things that are likely to come up over the next month and a half, basically, as Mars transits this sign, but that being said, I think I want to say a few things about the dignity, just so we can understand exactly why Mars in Taurus sometimes gets a bad reputation if you don't understand the language of ancient dignities.
It is not about prescriptive good and bad as much as it is about understanding planetary interactions and combinations, and their stresses, tensions, and creative and kind of creative interactions. So, when you put Mars in a Venus-ruled sign, or when you take Venus and put it in a Mars-ruled sign, because their signs are opposite to one another, we have a state of polarization that becomes present when, in this case, Mars is in Taurus.
So, what that means is that if you think about Taurus, it's a stable earthly feminine sign, earthy feminine sign, the domicile of Venus, and the exaltation of the moon. So we're talking about things like flow, peace, security, enjoyment, stability, luxury, wealth, the sensual appetite and its satisfaction, as well as things like a sense of a controlled environment.
The controlled environment that doesn't look like it's white-knuckle control, it's like easy, stable, flowing, peaceful, but very, very controlled. By that, I mean nothing radically unpredictable is happening now, especially now that Uranus is out of Taurus, right? Because of that, we get this kind of stable wavelength, and it's an enjoyable one, and a peaceful one.
It's even luxurious, and is associated with things like the goddess, the two goddesses, the moon and Venus, and with the satisfaction of the senses, with sensuality and creativity in a Venusian kind of way, but also with nervous system relaxation, simplicity, ease, and peace. Beautiful sign, right? Beautiful sign.
Now, there are shadows to the sign, the natural shadow opposite of Scorpio, for example, the opposite sign of Scorpio that takes place in the Northern Hemisphere's autumnal descent of light into darkness, the middle of autumn, zodiacally speaking. When that's taking place, we're metaphorically thinking about the loss of life, the impermanence, decay, death, degeneration, destruction as forces that are being driven.
In a sense symbolically, by Mars, a god that was associated with death, like Saturn, Mars is exalted at the time of the winter solstice, the darkest point of the year, the place of death, but also Mars's double meaning of being courageous and driven to persevere or work through death is also at work in Mars-ruled places.
Aries is the triumph of the light in spring, and it's another Mars-ruled place. Venus is exalted, or is in its rulership in the spring, in the middle of spring, but is also in its rulership at the beginning of fall. All planets have dualities present in them already, and in a way, Venus and Mars are inseparable parts of the same dyad.
They're like yin and yang. Understanding essential dignities has to do with understanding the interactions of opposites, for the most part. When you place Mars in this sign, its aggressive nature has to be expressed through an environment that's trying to keep the peace. My grandfather had Mars in Taurus, and I watched him constantly holding this tension.
For example, he was an engineer, and he liked working with the land, but he was like a bulldozer. He could create, I mean, he had apple orchards, he had beehives that he kept, he had a Christmas tree farm. He tapped two artesian wells on his land and built out the wells or the ponds by himself, like he was a force of nature in that respect.
But as good as he was at creating this beautiful space on his land agriculturally, he had big gardens, he donated a lot of stuff, but he was like a tractor, meaning cutting through the serenity of the natural environment. It's like a landscaping team, Mars in Taurus. You have to tear up the earth to build a beautiful English garden or something with Mars in Taurus.
So the tension of being a doer, an actor, a competitor driven by force and muscle and sweat and blood, but in an environment that's ultimately supposed to be about the ease, relaxation, stability, and enjoyment of the earth, so it finds itself in a certain kind of tension, and I hope that I'm sort of explaining it well enough.
You can yourself imagine a bull in a china shop is another example, just someone who's a little heavy-handed and sort of not as careful or cautious in an environment that's trying to be very beautiful and is a little bit more sensitive to the disruption of Mars, so these tensions are there.
However, a crew of people working to shape a garden, or I don't know, imagine the hobbits building their little hobbit holes, you know, there is some sweat required, and even the keeping of life in the material world involves chopping wood and carrying water, so that peace can be sustained and maintained.
So it's not just that Mars is bad in this sign, but Mars carries the tension of being more of the doer, actor, and kind of even antagonizer in a space that's really ideally about the peaceful sort of stasis of something that's already been established, so you can understand the tension that's present. I hope through these examples.
Let's take these through some horoscopes and see if we can't provide even more context for you, based on your rising sign, which is going to correspond to the whole sign house in your birth chart, but you could listen to this for your sun sign too, whatever you prefer. So, let's start off with Aries rising. We get Mars in the second house.
You could think about the urge to fight softening into a desire to preserve peace, stability, and material security, so that the conquest is specifically about material security and stability in the second house of money, assets, resources. How are you sort of acting on behalf of those things, but there could be conflicts that center around money or possessions?
You know, a stubborn kind of energy around those things that's a little bit more stressful. You could think of Mars as the pulse of desire and passion that is sometimes disruptive. If you think about a horny teenager or something, or an impulsive young person, there's an impulse of desire that can be very sensual, very comfort-seeking, but very impulsive.
That can be a part of what's happening in the second house with what you're indulging in or desiring, or how you're spending your money, and Mars might be sort of lowering its horns here by redirecting some force of aggression into cultivating things that will give you protection or security or peace materially. Building something lasting would be a great expression of this transit.
Let's go on to Taurus rising. Well, the benefit might be that there's an assertive quality coming in that allows you to be very productive and get things done and express yourself more deliberately, or a bit more assertively, but it's very steady and slower and more deliberate or focused somehow.
On the other hand, there might be a kind of tension between wanting to keep the peace on the one hand and feeling compelled to protect or defend yourself on the other, or getting easily irritated by people that feel like they're pushing in on you somehow. Now, the desire may intensify quite a bit around embodiment, pleasure, beauty, tangible forms of personal satisfaction.
You're feeling really identified with right now could become a little bit overwhelming. You could also say that Mars is fighting a fight on behalf of autonomy, selfhood, stability, the right to occupy your own space, and as a peaceful, easy person, this may have you feeling a little bit more assertive and confrontational than you're comfortable with.
All right, let's go on to Gemini, where we put this into the 12th house. Now, here, what's interesting is that any kind of anger, frustration, irritability, or conflict may go underground a little bit. Maybe that's not the right word. Out of sight, it may be behind the scenes somehow, and that can surface in indirect things like avoidance or passive aggression or fatigue.
There can be maybe some desire to withdraw from conflict altogether in favor of some quiet time or solitude or rest or retreat, and almost like an action that you need to take to disengage from the world a little bit, because you're finding that it's too stressful, and the tension between the peace you want or seek and the tension or stress you're feeling might have you needing to pull away.
It's also possible that hidden desires or impulses that are undermining will become more noticeable or problematic, and that could be also people that are undermining that become more problematic, hidden enemies, so to speak. Although I don't like that phrase because it can make it seem a lot worse than it is.
Just people or things that aren't necessarily good for you, that are sort of prodding you unconsciously, and I think one thing you could think about is where is it necessary to surrender to something rather than confront or conflict with it. Now, going to Cancer, Mars is in the 11th, so social conflicts may come up here in a place of groups and communities.
Tension with friends or groups can exist here and be a source of irritation or irritability. What are the most dependable people, the most dependable friends or groups that provide a sense of security, support, stability, ease, and happiness, versus where do you find conflict socially? And I wonder about this.
This is the house of hopes and wishes and dreams and aspirations as it climbs up to the top from the 11th toward the top by primary motion. So what are the long-term dreams, goals, ambitions that you can build towards steadily that may temporarily require a bit of work, even though you're at the moment almost feeling allergic to work?
It requires some staying power, some steady long-term vision. I would also say that Mars in the 11th can be about advocating for things, and maybe some level of conflict with things like friends or allies or colleagues that come up as well. All right, so some ideas there for the 11th house for Cancer rising.
So, let's go to Leo. We progress this Mars into Taurus into your 10th house, where professional ambitions can become a lot more measured, slowed down, deliberate, practical, which may be one of the great benefits of having Mars in the career house right now.
However, confrontations or conflict with authority or struggles around things like your reputation or even the feeling of feeling stagnant or somewhat stuck or blocked professionally, conflicts in the workplace, also the desire to seek out recognition and maybe your peace is somehow on the line.
How much peace and ease versus how much action and effort should be applied to your career pursuits right now, and Mars is again sort of lowering its horns by looking at things like dominance and notoriety and success or accomplishment, but also sort of pitting those things against peaceful, easy, stable, and enjoyable qualities.
These are not easy to reconcile when you're trying to get something done, but you're getting it done in a house that's about that kind of ease and sweet stability. All right, so Leos watch for that Mars energy in your career house. Virgos, we're taking it into your ninth, a place of higher beliefs, higher-mindedness, religion, spirituality, philosophy, travel abroad.
So I wonder about ideological rigidity or the potential for an element of fanaticism or fighting around beliefs or teachers or moral or spiritual frameworks. However, the beneficial side of this would be that you're looking for stabler systems of meaning or belief or spirituality, a kind of practical wisdom.
This leads to more of an embodied sense of peace and at-homeness in this lifetime, and evaluating what your beliefs are, and how they are contributing to that sense of peaceful easiness, or not, which could lead to certain kinds of mental or intellectual or philosophical struggles.
Also, this is a great time for disciplined study, kind of patient learning and cultivating some form of knowledge or some kind of educational process, but it has to be done through an exertion and effort. There's a burn you have to feel while learning whatever Mars in Taurus wants you to learn in this house.
So a level of sacrifice for the sake of learning something higher or acting on your beliefs, even if there's conflict involved, especially for Taurus ninth house, where you would like your beliefs to be peaceful and easy. All right, so let's go on to Libra. Libra takes it into the eighth house.
So we're talking about potential complications that can arise around things like intimacy. There might be a bit of a clash between the need for peace and stability, and the inevitability of emotional entanglements that are problematic, that have to be sorted through, ties or bonds that have to be sort of cut or severed.
Confrontations that have to occur in different karmic contracts with other people, and this could be financial or emotional, but Mars here will sever things that need to be cut, and it will also create meaningful confrontations where relationships can be deepened if you're willing to confront and directly go at something more directly, even if it's a little destabilizing for the peace.
There might be certain kinds of financial, relational, or emotional conflicts that are sort of lingering beneath the surface, especially related to topics like dependency or trust or control. So, you want to be very careful of handling those things gently, because the bull can lower its horns here and get sort of ornery and domineering.
You want to be careful not to, you want to hold ground, but you also want to give ground and share, so that you're holding that Mars-Venus tension. All right, let's progress to Scorpio rising, which brings us to Mars in the seventh house. Now relationships are going to become the specific area of life where these tensions of harmony and conflict have to be negotiated.
That can look like neither side wanting to give any way, and there being stubborn battles of will, and bulls' horns getting locked up, but it can also be about actively working to create a more stable, tranquil, loving, peaceful environment, but having to put the work in, having to make some sacrifices, having to confront some difficult things.
If you do it, there's enough of the peace of Venus present here where confronting those things could lead to a significantly safer, stabler dynamic. So, what are we confronting? What are we working through? Where are we, and what are our desires too? This could be about the presence of passion and desire in love, sex, and intimacy.
All right, moving on to Sagittarius, we take Mars into the sixth house. Now we have this energy being directed into a place that's really nice. I mean, this is the joy of Mars. Traditionally, Mars likes to work, and Mars naturally deals with the labor, sacrifice, effort, overcoming of hardships, perseverance, and the conflict of material life.
It is not all conflict, but it does involve conflict, right. So Mars here is like, how can I use energy and force to create more peace, but through the efforts of my labor, my routines, my health, the maintenance of everyday life? Frustration can accumulate while Mars is in this house through overexerting, overworking, bodily stress.
The kind of endless monotony of daily work and responsibilities, and Mars might be feeling quite fed up with it right now, which could lead to breakdown or health crisis or overwhelm, but if desire, also a Mars-ruled thing, can take to things like perseverance, discipline, good habits, there's this kind of sustainable productivity here.
It says you can get where you want to go if you have really good habits that balance your need for peace and ease with the need to involve effort, action, and sacrifice to get where you're going. So that kind of tension of Mars in the sixth there for Sagittarians. For Capricorns, we're looking at the fifth house.
We're talking about the place of creative fulfillment, joy, sensuality, and creativity. So Mars in this house can become very sensual and erotic and desire-oriented, whether that's what food you're eating, or the impulse to connect romantically with other people, or the urge to do something kind of creative and entrepreneurial.
To build something through effort that's an enduring form of creativity, so patient cultivation of creative talents through effort and labor, and keeping the beauty of the process in the mind, even while you're having to kind of burn and work and exert to get there, is a great Mars in Taurus dynamic in the fifth house.
I think there can be sort of stubborn attachments to less than healthy or constructive desires that you might have to face. That was a mouthful. Let's just put it this way: your impulses, your desires, what you find pleasurable, can also be a source of downfall. Drinking too much, spending too much.
You can, in a sense, be pushed around by your impulses and desires while Mars is here. Also, last thing I'll say is, anything related to children or pregnancy, setting the intention, okay, we're going to try to get pregnant or something like that, anything that comes up with some element of challenge, keeping the peace with kids too, that could be part of this.
All right, Aquarius rising places Mars in Taurus in the fourth place of home and family roots, family karma. So there might be domestic tensions or conflicts that are happening, especially around things like control, comfort, living situations. On the other hand, Mars can work actively to build a more stable, peaceful, protective, secure material base in life.
The end result is Taurian, but there's a labor going on to get there, even like remodeling your home. It's going to be more beautiful and relaxing, but it takes, there's a cost, there's work, it feels like a wreck while someone is taking down a wall or building out a porch or something.
It's also possible that you're internalizing some kind of anger or frustration deep within, and you have to be really careful with that. Also, the battle cry of Mars in this house is the prioritized, active working toward safety, continuity, emotional grounding. Mars is sort of, I want to do something on behalf of that.
But it may not be the most super peaceful thing at the moment, but where I'm trying to get us to is, so keep that in mind. Pisces rising, last but not least, Mars in Taurus in the third. You think about more intentional, slower, firmer, more deliberate forms of expression, mentally, verbally, any kind of skill or learning.
You're doing that requires kind of patient, methodical, slow development through effort. It's not, again, not necessarily the most peaceful thing, but it's like endure and you'll have something really valuable, really enjoyable. Conflict around siblings or peers, competition, some degree of jealousy or self-worth tied to your mind or your self-expression.
I'm only as good as I am kind of powerful mentally, verbally, psychologically, but at the same time I want to be a peaceful, easy presence. Well, that's a conflict you may be having to work through on some level right now. I think mental agitation can come up while Mars is in the third house.
It's also about what kinds of disagreements are really important to have right now, and which are those that you need to learn to hold peacefully and allow to evolve and speak in their own time, but not by forcing it, or one person sort of becoming dominant. All right, so we've gotten through those horoscopes today.
I hope that they're helpful for you. Remember, Mars is in Taurus now for quite some time. As we're approaching this, we're at what, the 18th of May, and we've got Mars in Taurus all the way.. whoops, here we go, all the way till about the end of June. So, if I actually back this up, it's around June 28 that Mars finally leaves Taurus.
So you know it's like a month and a half at least. I hope that you're all having a good day, good start to the week. What is your experience of Mars in Taurus? Do you have Mars in Taurus? Do you know someone that does? What are the most positive things you've seen from that placement?
What are some of the more challenging things you've seen? How do you notice that Venus-Mars tension? I'd love to hear from you guys on that question today. After I sign off, right now, there is an informational video about the year one program. It's coming up soon. Don't forget, my new book is out, The Oracle Speaks.
I would love for you guys to read it, and if you do read it, tag me on Instagram with a photo someplace, so I can help spread the news. It's Nightlight Astrology on Instagram there. So appreciate it. Hope you guys are having a good one.
