Yet we also face the shadow: self-deception, confusion, and the friction between your longing for harmony and your individual convictions. The opposition between Mercury in Libra and Neptune in Aries asks you to mediate between diplomacy and authenticity, between the desire for peace and the call to stand your ground.
The real practice is learning to float—to trust that you can be held when clarity is not available, and to hold the tension of opposites without collapsing into illusion or cynicism.
This transit also sets the stage for Monday's Venus-Pluto square, making this weekend a potent threshold for soul-level shifts.

Hey everyone. This is Adam Elenbaas from Nightlight Astrology [https://nightlightastrology.com/].
Happy Friday, everybody! Today we're going to take a look at Mercury in the sign of Libra, opposing Neptune in the sign of Aries. Now this transit is perfecting over the weekend. It gets started today. It'll last all the way through Monday. I'll give you the dates and times of the transit first, and then we're going to talk about some of the archetypal significations of this transit, which you're probably going to be experiencing over the weekend.
I think that this one is really interesting because when these two planets come into contact in an opposition, sometimes it's hard to. It's almost as though two different realities emerge. There's a kind of mystical, altered reality where dreams and synchronicities and intuition and precognition and all sorts of interesting mercurial phenomenon appear, and then there's the normal sort of linear world that's trying to hold on and make sense of things.
When these two planets get together, I think it's good for us to discuss some of the things that you might experience and know how to move through them and how to not just easily put what can be a very otherworldly experience into like one bin or another. Learning to hold the tension of opposites is a part of what I like to work on with my students on this channel and so forth. So we're going to do that today.
But before we get into it, remember to like and subscribe, share your comments. Give us the little thumbs up. Turn on notifications. Subscribing is free, and it really helps us. So take a second to do that if you haven't already. You can find transcripts of any of my daily talks on my website, which is nightlightastrology.com. A couple of promotions: our year one course starts twice a year.
Our next cohort begins in November. So, if you want to come and study astrology with us in what is now an APAI certified program, that is a really it's a real badge of honor for us. So, we are a recognized one of a few recognized schools that are allowed to give this credential. You can go to the courses page, click the first year course. Now our credential is given once you move through three years of our programming, but this is the first year.
And whether you're intentional about wanting to become a professional astrologer, where this is just something you absolutely love for yourself, it's your spiritual path. This program is designed to give you everything you need for a life of practicing astrology at a much higher level, with much more consistent results for yourself, for other people, if you choose to practice for others. But I will tell you about the program at the end of today's content.
There's an informational video tag down where I can kind of explain more things to you. It starts on November 14th, and the early bird sale is in effect now. That'll save you significantly off the cost of the course. Our prices are also going up slightly in 2027, so it's a good time to enroll. The Kickstarter will also have those sale prices prior to our rates going up a little bit.
Now, regardless, we always have need-based tuition, which mean and that's not going anywhere. Which means that if you're hurting financially, if you really want to study a sacred topic like astrology, but your budget is a real concern, apply for the tuition assistance. That's there to make sure that nobody's priced out of studying a sacred topic like astrology. And we take pride in making financial everything financially accessible.
On that note, if you go to book a reading, readings with Adam. I am back. My books are back open for readings. I've been able to keep a pretty good pace with the readings as they're coming in. So, if you have a question, something you'd like me to take a look at, maybe it's love or relationships or the year ahead or your soul at return, whatever it is, you tell me what you want me to look at when you fill out the form, that's what I'll look at.
I may include the I Ching and Taro as well, alongside of my natal analysis, just depending on what's going on. I like to have my full toolkit accessible now. If those are out of your price range, check out need-based astrology readings. That's readings with different staff members that give you some flexibility while they get very valuable experience building their career as a practicing astrologer.
Finally, go to events and click on annual retreat. We take a once yearly retreat, which is an amazing opportunity. That's in Minneapolis next summer. The Oracle Within. We have an informational meeting if you want to learn more about it. That's on Sunday, September 27. The information, the Zoom link is there to join. It's free. It's just an informational meeting, so you can learn more about this very special retreat and training program.
So, and then don't forget, every single day at Nightlight we have free meditation. Click on Community Quiet. You can come join us every day to meditate. That's totally free. All right, let's put up Nichepso, our affiliate software program, and as you guys know, every day if you want 20% off the program, the discount code for Nachepso is in the comments or description of the video.
All right, well here we are, and we have this transit in front of us, Mercury opposite Neptune, September 11 to 14. Someone asked me to put this text up for transits. I hope this is useful. I usually say the transit dates at the beginning and walk you through it on the screen, but in case you want it, I'll just put these up, and it might take me a minute to get into the habit of doing it. But I'll try to do this from now on.
So here is Mercury opposite Neptune, and I've got this set to Monday, September 14, where you can see there's a three degree range of separation. And I want to just back this up to today, Friday, September 11, where Mercury's just entered Libra. And for our purpose yesterday, we were looking at the new moon in Virgo. So if you missed that, you could go back and check out that new moon talk.
But Mercury will go through the opposition to Neptune tomorrow, Saturday, September 12, and then we're about a degree of separation away on Sunday, September 13, and we're about three degrees away on September 14, and that's the range that we use. Hellenistic astrologers, that's the form of astrology that I study in practice, used a three-degree range for just about everything.
So that three-degree engagement range, applying and separating, is really the critical space within which the manifestation of the symbolism typically occurs. Now, other things to keep in mind: Mercury right now is hosted by a Venus in Scorpio that's moving into a square with Pluto. We're going to be visiting that square with Pluto on Monday. Very intense.
Anytime Venus and Pluto get together, Mercury's hosting that square. And so part of what we're doing is with Mercury and Neptune. What they're bringing up is setting the table for the Venus Pluto dynamic early next week, so it's quite an intense little chapter we're walking through over the weekend with these two planets. Now, people frequently think of Mercury Hermes only in terms of things like the rational mind or communication and speech technology, all of which are fine, but Hermes plays a really interesting role, and that is mediating between worlds.
What do we mean by that? Well, if you have think about just having an unusual experience and then trying to convey it to a friend, we call that communication, interpretation, speech-that's where we get the word hermeneutic from, right? It's like the kind of like the art of interpretation. But in a way, what's happening is actually a little stranger than that. It's a little bit more mystical than that.
You've had an experience in a mode or form of consciousness that was strange or peculiar or different or bizarre, and then you're trying to bring someone from that from a different world, a different state of mind, to try to convey something that happened in a very different state of mind, and that is the art of explanation of interpretation, but we could say on a metaphysical level that what you're doing is traversing different dimensions of consciousness and experience.
Storytellers are particularly good at conveying different perspectives from different characters' points of view, different psychological dispositions, and different kinds of experiences within different positions. Isn't it wonderful how we can watch a story, you know, on Netflix, or we can read a book back in the day when people read, and we can, or nowadays, I guess we can listen to an audio book.
When that occurs, we're able to access different perspectives on life, and we're able to kind of walk a mile in someone else's shoes because of good storytelling. That's also related to Hermes. So just remember that Mercury's job is often to convey things that exist in one dimension or sphere of experience or one perception or world or paradigm, and sort of make it translatable to someone or something else.
And therefore, Hermes Mercury, especially when it gets into an opposition with Neptune, does some really bizarre and interesting things, and I think you're going to notice them over the weekend. Number one would be messages from beyond, whether it's dreams or it's an experience that you have maybe while meditating or journaling or going on a walk. We just recently watched.
There's a new documentary out. I think it's called "Saved by the beauty of the world, and it is about Mary Oliver. And I realized, by the way, if you were watching yesterday, I said I was going to read a poem by Mary Oliver, and I totally spaced. I just spaced, so I have that poem for you and I'm going to read it now to make this point.
All right, so this is admittedly not the exact same poem, but I am reading a Mary Oliver poem. So this one is called "Mysteries. Yes, truly we live with mysteries too marvelous to be understood. How grass can be nourishing in the mouths of the lambs. How rivers and stones are forever in allegiance with gravity, while we ourselves dream of rising. How two hands touch and the bonds will never be broken.
How people come from delight or the scars of damage to the comfort of a poem. Let me keep my distance always from those who think they have the answers. Let me keep company always with those who say, "Look, and laugh in astonishment, and bow their heads. First of all, that is one of many poems that I really like. But the reason that I bring up Mary Oliver today, in addition to covering up my boo-boo from yesterday, is that Mary Oliver was Virgoan.
She had a lot of planets in Virgo, including a strong Neptunian contacts. So Mary Oliver, just for your records, had Venus, Neptune, and the Sun all sort of triple conjoined in Virgo, and Mercury, who hosted, was in Libra. That connects a number of the different strands we've been looking at yesterday in the new moon video on Virgo and today, but to me the interesting connection is that when Mary Oliver went walking often in the woods in the countryside, and I believe she lived in Massachusetts, she was an observer of the natural world, but what she saw there, she had a way of capturing and conveying that few people have ever had.
And what she does is she takes the ability to see normal things and connect them to transcendental things so simply, with such ease and such yeah kind of purity. It that there's that sort of childlike innocence we were talking about with Virgo yesterday, the natural world: Sun, Venus, Neptune in Virgo, and the almost childlike curiosity and wonder, but connected to Mercury in Libra, there is some ability that she had to convey things of mystical and transcendental otherworldliness in everyday words, and so you may find this weekend that the task is to somehow communicate or convey something that is of a different order of reality altogether, and beyond our normal perception, there exists sometimes a world that is-it's here.
It's not really an angelic world far away. It's far away in terms of our consciousness because we don't regularly spend time with the angels. And what do we mean by that? For me, when I meditate in the morning, or when I take a walk, I put away my phone. That's a big one for me. I have to put away my phone, and I become really present. Even if I just become really present with my kids, all of a sudden, I really do feel like I'm in some kind of angelic space, beauty, graces my perception, and I realize this is here all the time.
My heart is not settled enough to feel it and receive it, and this is why meditation for me is a must. Because even if it only opens the doors of my perception ever so slightly toward this other, this other worldliness, this transcendental beauty, I'd rather that than be you know 20% more closed off to it. And I think Mercury Neptune oppositions just bring with them an invitation to open our hearts and our minds to perceive more of the beauty that's there, waiting to save us from how boring, you know, and unoriginal, or stuck, or sad, or depressed, or anxious we can get.
Not because we are that way or the world is that way, but because we've forgotten. The just that little shift that needs to be made, that I like to think of it as a receptive position. Like it's like more like my cup is open and ready to be filled. And as soon as you take that posture, stuff fills it. You know, magic fills it. Mercury Neptune can be about trying to convey something from the other world, receiving messages from the other world, a different sphere, a different paradigm, and also it can be the way that we are transformed and renewed because we remember.
Ah, yes, the universe speaks, and it's filled with mercy and grace and beauty and compassion and learning. I can learn something. Okay, number two on my list: going to church. Let's do it. Not seeing everything clearly. Well, the other thing that can happen with Mercury and Neptune is the degree to which we are not eyes open, hearts open, present to the beauty of the world, present to the great mystery is the extent to which we can actually amplify with this transit delusions, illusions, fantasies, ungroundedness, intoxication.
The mind can get high, you know, on its own supply. The mind can get disoriented, lost, overwhelmed, confused. The antidote to this usually is not the answer or an answer or control, as much as it is returning to receptivity. It's not wise to try to empty the ocean with a Dixie cup, and that's what our minds try to do when they get in contact with Neptune.
Where it's almost a little bit better. Something my daughters learned at swim lessons. First thing they learned is how to float on your back. Did your kids learn that? If you have kids, or do you remember learning that? Because when you get tired and you're struggling, the first thing they want you to be able to do is survive. And in the water, survival-one of the basic ways you do that is to just flip on your back and float, and trust that something natural about your body, your relationship with the water can hold you.
You can float. So, even if we're going through an experience this weekend where we can't see everything clearly, there's fog, there's illusion, there's confusion, there's deception. The main thing is to slow down and turn on your metaphorical back. Look up, float. Let yourself be held by something, and usually the clarity, the insight, any groundedness that needs to be there will come.
Number three, inspired communication. This is the kind of transit for me as a writer that will often come with a new chapter being written in the book that I'm working on, or it might coincide with a rapid period of development. Like I don't know, did I tell you guys that I'm in like adult music school? The eclipse happened on my natal Venus, and I was like, I'm going to music school. But in order to do so, I had to make a couple of sacrifices.
This is an interesting Mercury Neptune thing as well. I had to make a couple sacrifices, get a few things off my plate. I had to get off Instagram specifically so that I'd have more time because that was a kind of a place for me where I could get sucked into scrolling. I love creative content. I make it. I consume it. But scrolling, you know, I was like, I could do with less of this. So I curate the content from offline.
My social media manager handles that now, and that has freed up a lot of time for me, so that I can play music. There's a reason that I'm sharing this actually, as it came up. I thought this is actually a good thing to share because Neptune opposite Mercury will be about what is that higher thing that I want to spend a lot of time thinking about. I want to spend a lot of time learning about a skill that I want to develop.
But Neptune is a very sacrificial planet. Neptune will say that's why you have to be careful of Neptune. By the way, with things like martyrdom or you know a boundaryless sense of sacrificial compassion that might drain you or even harm you, but Mercury opposite Neptune can also be like, what do you want to learn, and what is the gesture of sacrifice you can make that will be very auspicious when it comes to opening a long term path of learning and development and growth and skill when you learn astrology in India, for example.
I just had two really amazing Indian astrology readings that were. It was called a nadi leaf reading. I don't know if you guys have ever heard about this, but in naughty, I won't explain the whole thing because it's kind of long. But I was curious about this form. Sort of ancient traditional form of reading. I was a little skeptical, to be honest, but I was like, I'm interested. It's sort of like astrology, but a little different too.
It involves your palmistry or your thumbprint. Anyhow, I got this reading. I thought it was a very good reading, like Indian astrology readings, in my experience, some of it was pretty heavily predictive, so I had to sort of filter that. And I say that in advance in case anyone's like, maybe I'm going to get an Indian astrology reading. Like, buyer beware. Good readings sometimes a little heavy. Depends on what kind of practitioner you're with.
Obviously, there's a lot of really sensitive Indian astrologers, but Anyway, the gentleman was telling me that in India, the astrologer, because I asked him some questions, and he was saying, you know, that his training involved mantra for years prior to learning the techniques. See, that's the kind of that's very Mercury Neptune in our Western language form of initiation and sacrifice relative to learning a skill.
I compare it right now, like as I'm learning my guitar. Although going to school for guitar, although the curriculum has me learning things that are fun, a lot of what I'm learning feel like mantras in terms of learning scales at different positions along the neck, you know things that I'm articulating that feel like mantras, and I think a lot of learning is like that. Like my daughter with piano is doing that right now. There's like piano drills or something.
So Mercury Neptune can have this interesting balance between I'm really really inspired by something, but it requires there's like a practical level of effort that I have to make to learn this thing or get this thing to work. Number four would be deception or illusion. We talked about this with not seeing everything clearly. Mercury Neptune a little bit more decisively can be about things like identity theft, fraud, thievery, deception, trickery, illusion.
So you do want to be a little bit careful about that. I think for most of us personally, outside of maybe becoming a victim of that, which probably nobody has real control over, is to be aware of potential, you know, potential fraud or scam. Like just kind of staying more alert to it. That doesn't mean you should, I don't know, look at your next door neighbor suddenly like they're a thief or something. But it does mean to be aware.
And then I think simultaneously, for most of us, the real potential shadow here is self-deception, self-illusion. So, thinking through things a little bit more, being a little bit more cautious, a little bit more discerning, without throwing inspiration out the window either. Number five would be mediation decisions and diplomacy under fire. The truth is that this opposition will bring up the need to mediate things and the potential conflict of something more selfish or individualistic or fiery, compulsive, impulsive, demanding, aggressive, assertive.
That's Neptune in Aries, versus the need for diplomacy, tact, mediation, agreement, and harmony that Mercury in Libra brings. So you may notice that taking place where it's like different ideas or different positions. I think a lot of us have this experience. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this. I think a lot of us have the experience of hesitating to identify ourselves according to an idea, an ideology.
It's not that we don't have ideas or values or a moral or spiritual compass, or even political inclinations-let's call them-but I think a lot of people hesitate to just put their identity into an idea bucket, or other people into an idea bucket, because there's something about that that can strip us of our humanity, and of our natural subjective inclination we have to harmonize with other beings rather than sort and categorize them in terms of labels and bins of like what idea do you have or what value defines who you are.
And so one of the things that's interesting about this opposition is that ideas do exist. We do have alignments or affiliations with ideas or values, and yet most of us resist being put too narrowly into anything we believe or think. If we're being honest, I think a lot of us feel that way, and so how do you sort out in a moment the very real differences between ideas or values, while also really deeply valuing the reality, which is that you're not an idea and I'm not an idea?
I think a lot of us are willing to compromise, not because we're compromising values or ideas, but because we, when we're with other people in our lives, in our work, or in our relationships, and different ideas arise or emerge, but we value peace, diplomacy, love, affection, connection, that we're willing to make room because those things lead, not because we feel really wishy-washy and don't have strong values or convictions.
I think there's probably a little intolerance around that in our world right now. Like there's intolerance toward that reality, that subjective reality that says I care more about you than about being right. But I, my personal feeling is that with this transit, at least, we probably should keep that in mind. I care more about love and harmony than being right. Can that be true? And this is the holding the tension of the opposites while also being someone who has principles and values.
I think a lot of this comes down to that catchphrase: nonviolent communication. When people say that, sometimes it feels violent to me. To be honest, depends on the context, But it depends on the context and how it's being said. Anything can be weaponized. It's very subtle, isn't it? But we can be peacemakers who have values. We can be lovers, harmonizers. We can be caring and thoughtful, and we can have values at the same time.
We can stand for something, and we can also care to stay connected to others, to stay in love with the world. So I leave you these things today for your consideration. I hope it helps as this transit occurs over the weekend. Have a beautiful, blessed day, and we'll see you again soon. Bye, everyone.
