Today the Moon is just about to enter Virgo, and will then conjoin Jupiter and oppose Neptune. A perfect day to look at the upcoming Jupiter/Neptune opposition in our Autumn astrology previews.
Unfortunately Jupiter/Neptune contacts are often overlooked because they are thought of as short lived or fast moving. However, if we call on the doctrine of whole sign aspects, then for as long as Jupiter is in Virgo (the next year) then Jupiter’s opposition to Neptune will be in effect. Regardless, the aspect is nearly exact right now by degree, so let’s take a look at its symbolism.
The combination of Jupiter, the planet of faith, hope, growth, adventure, good luck, expansion, and exaggeration, and Neptune, the planet of mystery, mysticism, illusion, imagination, fantasy, and romanticism, combines to give us any of the following themes or images:
* Space flight or expanded exploration of distant, romantic, worlds
In 1990 under a previous Jupiter/Neptune opposition the Hubble deep space telescope was launched into space. In 1996 under the subsequent conjunction the first modular space station was completed, and in 2003 under the following opposition space shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon its reentry into the earth’s atmosphere over Texas.
Looking back at Jupiter/Neptune aspects, there are an abundance of science fiction, space and space travel themes related to these two planets in their interactions.
* The imagination, art, and cultural innovation
In 1971 under a Jupiter/Neptune conjunction Disney World opened in Florida. In 1977 under the next opposition, Apple Computer was incorporated and Star Wars and Close Encounters were released. In 1984 under the next conjunction the Macintosh personal computer was released, MJ’s Thriller was album of the year, and in 1990 under the next opposition the Simpsons and Seinfeld were launched and the internet debuted. This is just a short list of an incredible synchronization of themes under these time periods that relate to hallmarks of the human imagination or major cultural shifts related to fantasy, the arts and imagination.
* Charity work, global humanitarianism, and religious reform
In 1971 under the same Jupiter/Neptune conjunction that saw Disney World open in Florida, Greenpeace was also founded in Canada. In the opposition of 1977 the first female episcopal priest was ordained, the nuclear proliferation pact was agreed to by 15 countries, and the president pardoned Vietnam draft evaders. Then in 1984 Italy and the Vatican agreed to end the state religion of Catholicism in Italy, and in 1990 the cold war ended. Again this is just a brief list.
Under the last Jupiter/Neptune conjunction the movie “Avatar” was released alongside a remake of Star Trek. Michael Jackson passed away (there is also a history of assassinations or the martyr like passages of important cultural figures during these transits, including the death of Indira Ghandi and Marvin Gaye, among others), and a wave of political/religious issues surrounding same sex marriage commenced (2009). The government also decided to no longer prosecute people for using marijuana for medical purposes, Obama announced plans to pull troops from Iraq, and the Kepler space photometer was launched, beginning the most active search for planets outside of our solar system to date.
After examining my own history with the Neptune/Jupiter conjunctions and oppositions I also found a fascinating pattern. Under the first contact of my lifetime my father, a methodist minister, took his first church and we moved from his seminary in Kentucky to Minnesota. Under the next he was promoted to a larger church and again we moved. Under the next, again he was promoted and we moved, and under the next I finished college and I moved to begin a career in church work as a youth minister that would be short lived because of psychedelic experiences that “launched” me into a different orbital pattern. Under the next transit I finished graduate school and took a job working for Franciscan priests at a residence home in New York (again moving), and by the end of the last transit I had begun my career as an astrologer and once again moved to launch a yoga studio in DC with my now wife. Each Jupiter/Neptune contact has involved religious/imaginative expansion and travel.
Here are the years to look for going back to the 1970’s:
1971, 1977, 1984, 1990, 1996, 2003, 2009, and now…
See what you can see. Remember the themes of inspiration, imagination, fantasy, expansion, faith, reform, progress, hope, broadening and adventure, and reaching beyond this world…also the tragedy of martyrs, saints, victims, and heroes of the faith!
Prayer: I’ve got a river of life, flowing out of me. Makes the lame to walk, and the blind to see. Opens prison doors, sets the captives free. I’ve got a river of life, flowing out of me. Spring up a well, within my soul. Spring up a well, and make me whole. Spring up a well, and give to me, that life, abundantly!
