Introduction to Horary Astrology

While my first and second-year certification courses focus on Hellenistic ancient astrology, I’ve spent the better part of the last decade studying and practicing horary—a brand of astrology I’ve grown incredibly passionate about. I’m also conversant in a wide variety of different astrological schools of thought and frequently incorporate elements of modern archetypal and psychological astrology in my courses. 

My study of yoga and astrology began in the depths of countless visionary experiences while studying ayahuasca shamanism over the course of more than 10 years and 100 ceremonies. I consider this my first and primary teacher of astrology.

In a more traditional sense, my most impactful astrology teachers and influences include Rebecca Gordon, Christopher King, Geoffrey Cornelius, John Frawley, Robert Schmidt, Chris Brennan, Liz Greene, Richard Tarnas, James Hillman, Demetra George, Deborah Houlding, James Holden, Steven Forrest, and too many others to name!

This course is intended for students who already have a solid foundation of astrological learning and have completed my first-year course. 

Horary astrology is a branch of astrology like no other. The word horary means "of the hour" or "pertaining to the hour.” The practice of horary astrology involves casting astrological charts for the moment of an important question or inquiry. 

For example, a client asked me whether or not she should move back to her hometown. I cast a chart for the moment of the question, and using horary techniques, I discovered the motivation to move back home was coming from a desire to reunite with a former lover. When I asked her about this, she was astonished. "Yes," she said. "He's motivating my desire to move back, but what does that have to do with it?" Based on the receptions and dignities between their planetary significators I said, "The relationship will not work, so you should know that if you move home for that reason, it's not likely to turn out the way you hope." After meditating on the results, she decided not to move home and wrote to me saying, "I knew deep down he wasn't right for me. I guess my real question was about our compatibility, and I'm so thankful that the oracle was able to identify that and help me come to the wise decision."

In this example and countless others, horary astrology simultaneously illuminates dynamics of fate and choice, fortune and providence. 

Although our programs are big, we offer a variety of services to make sure that students are personally cared for throughout the program. Our classroom discussion forum is staffed with experienced tutors who are there to help answer questions you have about classroom material. I am available to answer questions by email throughout the year. It is also quite common for students to independently form study groups outside of class through our discussion forum. Our motto is: "no question goes unanswered when you're in our classrooms."
