* Jupiter in the Mars ruled, feminine/yin water sign of Autumn brings together the qualities of disintegration, death, destruction, depth, and intensity, with wisdom, faith, hope, renewal, growth, and nobility. What do these themes look like when you put them together?
* Once upon a time, there was a man who was living by himself and he was gifted a jar of “medically enhanced” butter. He kept it in a jar in his refrigerator because he wasn’t the type to eat that kind of butter (those days were in his past). He hadn’t wanted to reject a gift, though, and so he had kept the jar around and figured maybe someday a special occasion would arise. Then one day, a year or so later, some friends were visiting for the weekend and one of them decided it would be fun to bake some cookies. She asked the man if he had any butter, and he said, yeah there should be some butter in the refrigerator. The woman couldn’t find a stick, but she noticed a jar with the word “butter,” on it. The word “butter” was in quotes. So she made the cookies, but then nobody actually ate any. The friends left the next day and the cookies remained in a Tupperware on the man’s kitchen table. That night he decided to eat some of the cookies his friend made, and he had a few too many. Within a few hours, the man was completely absorbed into his thoughts and felt “strange.” He quickly realized the woman had used, “the butter.” He did not return from butter-land until sometime the next afternoon. And everything that happened, he had done to himself, and yet he had not seen it coming. His big takeaway? All of life is actually something like this…everything that happens, we do to ourselves, and yet we rarely see it coming. It was one of the most profound realizations of his entire life, and it led him to quit his job several months later.
Oh, and Jupiter had just moved into Scorpio. š
* Once upon a time there was a woman who was trying to quit drinking alcohol. She had tried everything she could to quit, but each time she quit she eventually resumed her drinking again. Then one day, she had an idea, she would go to work completely wasted and try to create such a scene that she would lose her job and force the need for a major rehaul of her life. The idea came to her while drunk one night, but it remained curiously appealing even when she was sober. She kept thinking to herself, “I can force myself to get sober if I just drive this car straight into the wall.” So that’s what she did. She went to work wasted. Everyone noticed, especially when she purposefully pushed the water cooler over and tried to urinate in her cubicle. Her boss called her into her office and she was fired. She got home and it actually worked. She started turning her life around almost instantly. However, years later, and not one therapist, counselor, friend, or relative has ever acknowledged what a good idea it was. Everyone always says, “That was an extreme way to handle the problem. You’re lucky it worked rather than making it worse.” Not one person has ever said, “What a brilliant, courageous, and wise decision you made that day to drive yourself into the wall.” She lives perpetually confused by how such an unwise decision, such a rash decision, such a destructive decision, just so happened to be the wisest one on that day. To some of her closest friends, she sometimes says, “I know it was crazy, but I just knew it was right. I knew it would work, and it did.” Her friends always appear disturbed when she says this. Oh, and when this happened, Jupiter had just moved into Scorpio! Of course! š
* Notice that in both of these short Jupiter in Scorpio tales the comingling of destruction and wisdom, of self-sabotage and of the special grace that can only reveal itself through conscious or unconscious acts of destruction. Collectively, we love to say that everything is meaningful, that there is a silver lining in every cloud. Jupiter in Scorpio likes to say that there are actually silver clouds, as well. Think about it.
Prayer: Show us the silver clouds. Show us the mercy, grace, and beauty of the fall.
