Hey everyone, this is Adam Elenbaas from Nightlight Astrology. Today we're going to take a look at Mercury cazimi, sometimes called Mercury at the heart of the Sun. This is an exact conjunction between Mercury and the Sun that happens during Mercury's retrograde process. It also happens when Mercury is moving direct and crosses the Sun, and it has a special meaning in astrology. We're going to discuss that meaning broadly, in case it's new for some of you. We will also be looking at some of the specifics, given that this is taking place in the sign of Sagittarius.
Sagittarius is something of a tense or challenging spot for Mercury, given the dignity that it has there, as well as the fact that this Mercury-Sun conjunction is taking place in an opposition to Jupiter in Mercury's sign. So, there's that mutual reception by detriment and opposition at work in the midst of the cazimi as well. I'm going to give you five things to watch for, given all of this, and make sure that we take some time to explain the meaning of a cazimi as well. So that is our agenda for today.

As you know, we are in the midst of our annual Kickstarter campaign with a backer goal of 19,137 backers by January 1. We're trying to rally support for the channel and all of the production of free content in the year ahead. At the end of today's video, you can hear about the rewards that are available when you support the channel. There's a little video attached explaining all of the reward tiers, and we have some really unique gifts that we offer when you donate. For example, we have discounts ranging from 50% to 75% off our programs, our online courses. When you bundle some of them together, you can save even more.
We also offer exclusive lectures, readings, talks, and Masterclass series. All sorts of really good stuff are on sale through the Kickstarter, which helps support our work and the channel. You can go over to the Kickstarter link; it's in the description and the comments section of this video. Or you can go to the website, Nightlightastrology.com, and click on the 2025 Kickstarter link. Press back this project, scroll down, and you'll find all the rewards listed and explained here as well. At the very bottom, you'll find those class bundles, which are our most popular offering. We only offer this sale price on the courses once a year during the Kickstarter, and they are good for any of our programs in 2025 or beyond. You can redeem them whenever you'd like. They last forever, and you can use them again anytime in 2025 and beyond. So it's a really good deal.
During this time of year, I like to take a moment to reflect on what I think is valuable about this channel and about the content. I reflect on it in the hopes that, if you also find this valuable, you may consider supporting us. Any and every donation helps. If you're not able to donate, even just prayers, good energy, putting something on your altar, praying that we would be supported, and also that we would use any success we have to reinvest in our mission to make astrology accessible for people, all of that helps us as well. We really do appreciate any and all forms of support.
One thing that I find valuable—I've talked about different things that I'm very purposeful about in the development and creation of daily content year-round. One of the things that I'm very passionate about is including laughter. As you guys know, my sense of humor is weird. I often include laughter at myself for the crazy things running through my head, sometimes that I just accidentally blurt out. But I really do believe there's an intentionality behind making sure there are just sprinkles of lightheartedness, absurdity, and self-effacing humor. Just laughing at life, right? Being able to reflect on things astrologically in a way that's sometimes really fun and funny.
I find that a mix of serious, devoted spiritual content, along with daily life and laughter, makes for a really special recipe. So if you value that as well, know that there is always a conscious way in which I think, "Gosh, I haven't laughed in a while. It's time to say something crazy." There's a rhythm where you’ll find episodes pop up where there's just a lot of laughter, and that, to me, is something I really value in the work. If you do too, please consider supporting us again. You can find the link in the description of the video, in the comment section, or on the website, Nightlightastrology.com. Pick up a cool reward when you donate. Stick around after today’s content to hear more about the rewards we offer.
Okay, on that note, let’s take a look at this Mercury cazimi. Let’s refresh on the meaning of a cazimi and then talk about five things to watch for, given this particular cazimi.
Oh, you know what? The wrong chart popped up. I was just doing a livestream not long ago, and one of the guest’s charts popped up. Okay, let’s get ourselves oriented here. I'm not sure how that happened. Let’s go to... here we are. Okay. We're on Thursday, December 5. Here we go. Sorry, guys. Alright, there it is. Now today, we are looking at Thursday, December 5. We are looking at Mercury retrograde at the 14th degree of Sagittarius, where, of course, the Sun is also located. If we speed this up by one day, you’ll notice that by tomorrow, Mercury has crossed over the 15th degree and is already back at the 13th degree. So it's a very fast transition.
Let’s just take it hour by hour. I’m going to exclude everything but a few planets from our view. So, as today unfolds, Thursday, December 5, notice that Mercury is moving very quickly along into the exact conjunction with the Sun. This is by about 8 p.m. Central time on today, Thursday, December 5. But if you continue speeding this up, you'll notice that by tomorrow morning, December 6, Mercury is already at the 13th degree, and then the Sun has moved to the 15th degree. Then, before you know it, Mercury, by Friday evening into early Saturday morning, is already out of the engagement range of three degrees of separation.
Let’s take this along a little bit further. By 2:53 a.m. Central time on Saturday morning, Mercury has already passed through the three-degree engagement range and is already starting to emerge gradually as the morning star. Now, what happens almost simultaneously, right, is the Sun goes into an opposition with Jupiter. That opposition is a critical part of Jupiter's retrograde. Any of the superior planets, when they turn retrograde, will go through an opposition with the Sun before slowing down to turn direct and eventually conjoining the Sun again. So it’s a critical part of the synodic cycle of Jupiter and the Sun taking place right now.
But what’s more interesting to me is the fact that after that three-degree engagement range separates around December 10, just a couple of days later, Mercury stations on December 15, and then its direct motion will take Mercury back through the opposition to Jupiter by December 26–27. So remember we talked about this a few weeks ago, when we talked about Mercury and Jupiter being in mutual reception by detriment and opposition. We reflected on that quite a bit. I’m not going to go through all of that again, but it’s important to remember that this Mercury cazimi moment is part of the ongoing opposition with mutual reception and mutual reception by detriment taking place between Mercury and Jupiter.
We can't forget that context, because it’s very important to some of the things I’m going to say on our “what to watch for” list. Now, here we have... if you just back this up just a touch, yesterday, we looked at Mercury opposing Jupiter, and that opposition came through. Today, we’ll find that we have the exact cazimi coming through. So again, we see Mercury and Jupiter as an inherent part of the story of this cazimi. Just to give us that context again, let’s talk about a cazimi.
A cazimi happens within the synodic cycles of all planets with the Sun. It happens when the Sun, if it's the faster-moving planet, will apply to the conjunction of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, the superior planets that move slower than the Sun. The Sun moving faster than them makes the conjunction, and when it conjoins those planets, those planets go into the heart of the Sun. That cazimi moment is essentially a rebirthing moment at the start of a new synodic cycle with the Sun. It’s like a new moon, in a sense.
When we look at the cycles of Mercury and Venus—planets that are faster than the Sun—and the Moon is like this too, those planets faster than the Sun will conjoin the Sun, and when they do so in direct motion, that typically is the starting point of a new cycle. Some people measure the starting point of the cycle during the retrograde conjunction. It’s pretty subjective, if you ask me. Either way, you’re looking at important moments of reset and renewal within the connection between the two planets when the cazimi occurs.
So one way of thinking
about a Mercury cazimi is that Mercury is reborn into the Sun, and then that conjunction with the Sun becomes a sort of guiding light. It’s an illumination. There’s clarity of thought, clarity of communication, new insights, new ways of thinking about things. The ideas and messages you’re receiving are very important during a Mercury cazimi. And if you think of the Sun as a kind of light or insight, Mercury at the heart of the Sun is bringing messages that are particularly important, that can be considered revelatory. The messages coming through are a little extra insightful, a little extra illuminated during this time. It's a very heightened time for clarity, understanding, and new ways of thinking.
But, again, remember, this is occurring during the Mercury retrograde process, and because Mercury is moving in reverse, there’s something very reflective and inward about the process of clarity coming through during this time. This isn’t the kind of clarity where you immediately act on what you know. It’s more the kind of clarity where you’re digesting, reflecting, and considering.
Alright, so with all that said, here are five things to watch for during this Mercury cazimi in Sagittarius:
1. Revelation About a Current Process or Cycle. As I said, the key to the cazimi is clarity. This can be a time of revelations about whatever Mercury is retrograding through in your chart. If you know where the 14th degree of Sagittarius is located in your chart, pay close attention to any insights or new realizations you have about processes or cycles that you're currently going through in your life. That can be relationships, work, anything. Some of the ideas or messages that come through are very illuminating, so be especially mindful of any “aha” moments or flashes of insight about things that you’ve been reflecting on during the retrograde.
2. New Thinking About Personal Beliefs. Sagittarius is the sign of philosophy, higher learning, and belief systems. So, you may be receiving new insights or realizations about your personal beliefs, worldviews, or spiritual practices. Perhaps something you've been contemplating for some time about your belief system or your place in the world comes to the forefront with fresh clarity. Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius is also about revisiting old philosophical ideas or spiritual practices, so you may get new clarity on something you used to believe in but that has evolved over time.
3. Messages About Travel and Education. Sagittarius is the sign of long-distance travel, higher education, and exploration. A Mercury cazimi in Sagittarius could bring forward clarity or new ideas related to travel, whether it’s a physical journey you’re taking or an intellectual one. This could be a time when you get insights into things like international opportunities, educational plans, or travel logistics that might have been up in the air. Some of you may even have insights into where your wanderlust is pulling you or how a course or program might serve you on your journey.
4. Sudden Shifts in Perspective. Because Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius can bring back old ideas, old beliefs, or even old friends or connections from the past, you may experience a dramatic shift in perspective about something you thought you already knew or understood. Maybe your views on a particular topic or issue suddenly shift. Because of Mercury’s connection with the Sun in a cazimi, this shift could be very illuminating, like the flash of a lightbulb. Something that used to feel very clear to you could suddenly seem very different.
5. The Importance of Reflection Before Action. Although Mercury cazimi is a time of clarity, because Mercury is retrograde, it’s a time to hold back on acting too quickly or jumping to conclusions. The insights and ideas you have are very valuable, but they need time to integrate. This is not the time to go full steam ahead with whatever new revelation you receive; it’s a time for contemplation, review, and reflection.
I hope this has been helpful! If you want to explore any of these themes more deeply, leave a comment, and let’s have a discussion about how you are experiencing this Mercury cazimi in your own life. As always, feel free to share this video with friends and family if you think it would be helpful to them. Thank you for being here, and I’ll see you next time.
