The Moon is in Aries today, moving toward a square with Pluto this afternoon.
This morning I studied the I Ching in relationship to the upcoming Mars/Saturn conjunction, which has been building up slowly for the past few weeks. The hexagram I received offer several fascinating insights that I’ll share today…
Hexagram #57: The Penetrating Wind
In this hexagram we see wind following upon wind. Sometimes the hexagram is spoken of as a favorable wind, other times a strong and mighty wind. In both instances, the idea of a strong influence as well as the idea of submitting ourselves to something stronger or wiser, like grass bending before waves of wind, is suggested.
With a Saturn/Mars transit we frequently talk about discipline, strength, intensity, focus, limitations and frustration with limitations, and so forth, but we rarely talk about submission. The 57th hexagram of the I Ching speaks directly to the idea of submitting ourselves to something powerful, and in fact the title of the hexagram “Penetrating Wind” suggests that through submission we allow something greater to guide us and direct us favorably.
Most of us have had enough bad experiences with authority figures that the word submission sounds a little suspicious, but by gently opening ourselves to the influence, guidance, or direction of someone or something else we may actually find ourselves like a boat that has suddenly caught a strong wind and is moving along quickly after being stagnant or stuck for a long time.
The inverse teaching of this hexagram has to do with the power of influencing others. If we want others to submit to our influence or direction in a situation, then the instruction is to persist gently and in waves, like wind blowing over grass until the grass finally bends and we see the fingerprints of the wind upon it. This requires patience, flexibility, adaptability, gentleness, and patience all at once. With Mars/Saturn transits, sometimes compromise and patience become dirty words, especially in the fiery and Jupiterian sign of Sagittarius…who is quick to offer a sense of “rightness.”
When we submit ourselves to this power, or when we learn how to wield this power as an influence over others, as a leader, the I Ching says that the result is good relationships between rulers and citizens…modesty, flexibility, patience, and persistence become the currency by which we relate with one another…not surprisingly in astrology all of the Air signs relate to the idea of “humaneness” and social grace. The influence of the wind is strong but changeable, and the fact that the I Ching would suggest more air/wind right now, in the midst of a fiery day with a fiery Mars/Saturn transit, is a teaching worth paying attention to in our personal lives!
Prayer: Teach us to bend before the gentle winds, teach us to notice and feel the gentle winds, teach us to become the influence of the gentle winds…the strength of flexible persistence.
