The Fate of the King — Jupiter Enters Leo

We're going to take a deep dive into the sign of Leo and talk about what we can expect over the course of the next year while Jupiter moves through the sign of the lion, the sign that was given the sun as its ruler. If I advance this by a year, we're going to go forward one year, and by June 30 of 2027 you can see that Jupiter's in the final degrees of Leo and will enter the sign of Virgo right about here. This is Monday, July 26.

So we have about a year per sign. Jupiter takes about 12 years to go through the zodiac. So, with retrogrades included, we often get about a year of time per sign of the zodiac. It can be a little uneven, depending on how much retrograding it does. It's not like it just goes through every sign in one year straight. Sometimes it backs in and out, but you get about a year total, so that's a good rule of thumb. And what we're looking at right now in the sky is Jupiter, and Jupiter's ingress.

When a planet ingresses into a new sign, it usually makes a pretty big splash. We're going to do some horoscopes tomorrow, and we've also got some Mercury retrograde horoscopes we're going to be doing this week, so I thought today we really need to focus on the ingress. At first, I was thinking maybe I would do Mercury retrograde horoscopes. I think we're going to push those back today, because this entrance really is a big deal. Now, not only is it a big deal because it's a slow-moving planet entering a new sign.

When it ingresses into a new house in your chart, it can really make some powerful changes coming pretty instantly for some people in the next weeks, the next month. You'll really notice it. Not only that, but July is one of the biggest months of the year. At the outset of the month of July, we are dealing with a Mars-Uranus conjunction, and then we are dealing with a configuration that's pretty powerful in Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, all being connected by sextiles, while Jupiter is moving into an opposition with Pluto.

The Jupiter-Pluto opposition is followed by a full moon that will take place in a conjunction with Jupiter, as Jupiter is, excuse me, a conjunction with Pluto, as Jupiter is Cazimi. So, let me take you through and show you what this looks like as the month goes on. We have so many things happening, it's really pretty powerful. So, let's take us into July, and we're going to see that the Mars-Uranus conjunction happens about Friday, July 3. It makes for an interesting Fourth of July, and then right after that we have Uranus and Pluto entering their trine.

Now, at the same time that these two planets are trine, which is powerful on its own, Neptune is also sextile to both of them, so all of the outer planets are configured harmoniously. That's sort of breathtaking, but at the same exact time we also have Pluto bearing down on the opposition. The opposition of Jupiter to Pluto starts occurring right around July 18th and 19th. We see that Jupiter is going to go right through the opposition to Pluto by the 20th, it's exact, and then around the exact same time, all of the outer planets still configured, we're going to move into a powerful full moon window.

Now, that full moon window is going to happen right about here, and you can see that the full moon is conjoined Pluto. This is July 29. The conjunction of the full moon to Pluto occurs at the exact same time that the sun and Jupiter are conjoined, which is Jupiter's Cazimi, or its death and rebirth. This is a powerful month collectively. We're going to see some major events in the collective this month, for sure, and they'll probably coincide mostly with the Jupiter-Pluto opposition and with the Cazimi of Jupiter and the full moon in Aquarius.

So between, let's say, the 18th of July and like the 29th or 30th of July is one of the busiest, most dynamic periods of 2026. Maybe right next to it is Saturn-Neptune's conjunction in the beginning of the year, around the same time that you can remember Mars and Pluto were getting together in Aquarius, and here in Minneapolis it was an incredibly dynamic period of time. We were sort of the epicenter of things that were happening politically in the United States, but you get the idea. This is a very dynamic period.

So, what I want to do today is try to cover Jupiter's entrance into Leo, from the standpoint of a deep dive into the sign of Leo. There's a lot that can be said about this sign, but I think what I tried to do was like I felt like I was circumambulating the shrine of Leo in my heart today when I wrote this talk. The first thing I want to do is to look at the etymology of some of the key words that are often associated with Leo, the sign of the lion, the sign of the sun.

So, first, let's get into some etymologies, because I think this is going to help us with understanding Jupiter. But before I do that, I should actually say something, just a few little notes about Jupiter. Remember that in ancient astrology, Jupiter is associated with everything that gives life a coherent sense of meaning, purpose, order, and intelligence. So, it's a planet of wisdom, but it's a planet of wisdom that's also always evolving. I recently had a talk with Ari Mosha Wolf on my channel, evolutionary astrologer and colleague, real brother of mine.

He talked at length about the meaning of Jupiter in the evolutionary paradigms, very similar to the ancient Hellenistic paradigm, which is to say, and Indian astrology, where Jupiter's called the guru, which is to say that Jupiter is thought of as a producer of meaning, order, coherence, unity, a sense of purpose and understanding, or wisdom. Now that means that in the ancient world, Jupiter ruled things like religion and law and government and institutions of higher education and paradigms of meaning or wisdom.

So if you think about the paradigms in a given field, engineering, architecture, the law, as paradigms change and understanding evolves, the wisdom continues to expand. We can assume that if what the ancients said is true about divinity, about reality itself, that reality is so unlimited that the truth of reality and our understanding of it never ends. So it's as though every moment that you come to an understanding of the universe, it expands beyond the reach of that understanding.

This is why we say that the Dao that can be named is not the Tao, but every field that we live in, or study, or teach, we're always working through our current best understanding, and that understanding is always changing and evolving, but we need this sense of meaning and purpose. We need an understanding of what is true, to whatever extent we're able to grasp it, that we operate from at least temporarily until the paradigm moves or changes or expires or evolves. So Jupiter is that paradigm of meaning, purpose, understanding, wisdom, always changing.

When Jupiter is in the sign of Leo, we are therefore talking about a year in which our wisdom, our understanding, our learning, the paradigms and their evolution are taking place along solar Leonine lines. So first, in order to explore what that might mean, I want to talk about some of the etymologies of the key words frequently associated with Leo. Let's start with the most obvious, which is Leo. The lion is often associated with kings, and I can guarantee you, this month of July will probably have a lot of meaning for things like leaders, rulers, CEOs, celebrities, presidents.

People who are either famous or in charge of something. Solar figures can often mean fame, but it frequently also means the king, the leader, the ruler, the person around which everything orbits in some organizational sense. So it's going to be a very big month and year ahead for the topic of leaders, rulers, kings, and so forth, especially the Jupiter-Pluto opposition, which can really challenge leaders and create things like regime changes, and so forth. Anyhow, now the word king, the English king, comes from Old English cyning, related to cynn, meaning kin, family, race, or lineage.

Now I'm not, I might be not doing the pronunciation so well because I don't know Old English, but the king, in other words, was not just the strongest, most dictatorial person originally. Before we have had issues with kings and the abuse of power, and so forth, the original and ideal meaning of a king is someone who represents a group, one who belongs to a group, one who belongs to a lineage, one who stands as representative of a larger whole, and whose responsibility it is to help keep the continuity of that whole together.

So in this sense, the king is not self-created, they're a part of something they belong to something, and often become sort of a representative of that something that they belong to, although some of that's by birth and some of it's by election, or whatever. We're not going to talk so much about how the king is chosen, more just what ideally a king represents. A king, and we could, by extension, say a queen, because let's make this not about gender, let's just make this about the archetype of a leader.

You, as a king, the idea with kin and lineage as a part of the etymological roots, is that you've inherited something that you stand for, that you represent, you're entrusted with, and you become a living vessel that is also like emblematic of that larger thing's continuity. So Jupiter in Leo is going to be a year in which our personal and spiritual evolution happens along the lines of the ego growing in its realization of what it belongs to, what it serves, what it represents.

That not just ourselves, but that we're inheritors and transmitters of something that we represent, but that lives beyond us. This is why we could also look at the etymology of the word crown. This is important, right, because the crown has a similar etymological meaning, coming from the Latin corona, which means crown, wreath, garland, or some kind of circular ornament, which is also emblematic of the sun. Something curved is the Greek. There's a Greek ancestor of the word coronae, which means something curved or bent, but it encircles.

The idea of the crown is the one wearing the circle of unity that they take on the role of being an embodiment of unity for a larger whole. The crown is a signification, in other words, of completion. It's a circle of wholeness, and it's also representative of a halo of light that's a reflection of the crown, is a reflection of the sun. It's a circle, it's a mandala, it's like the sun as a disc, and the person's ego and head, which is where the crown sits, is now crowned or encircled by a responsibility.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown, ideally because it's a responsibility to act as a living part of a group's continuity. This is why so many myths portray real kings or queens as having a responsibility to something larger than themself that can be very heavy. So Jupiter in Leo can be about the heaviness of what we are responsible for, and what we're responsible for doesn't have to be soul crushing, and we don't have to become martyrs or fall on our sword. It doesn't have to be that extreme.

But our life is meant to find its best sense of self in what we can use ourself to help ensure the continuity of beyond ourself, and that's a paradox, because on the one hand we want to say, well, if I'm serving something bigger than myself, then I'm neglecting myself, but the idea of Leo is that actually you're fulfilling your sacred instructions. You're fulfilling your spiritual mission and purpose when you find the little crown that fits your head perfectly.

And what that crown means is that you are entrusted to be a living example of something that helps create continuity among people that you serve and belong to that are bigger than just yourself. This is why, when Jupiter enters the sign of Leo, and also has major opposition to Pluto, that we could see the crown being transferred. Leadership or regime changes become natural because the crown of Leo is faced with the transformational opposition of death and rebirth through Pluto, and so we can see regime changes, leadership changes, death or rebirth of solar figures like fathers or leaders or queens.

It doesn't have to be purely a masculine thing, though. You know, in this world that often has men at the tops of hierarchies, it probably will show up that way, because that's a mirror of what a lot of our world is like right now. Royal, another word comes from the Latin regalis, or from Rex, which means king, and the deeper Indo-European connection to that word is to straighten, to guide, to rule, to direct. Now, what we're talking about is more like when something is sort of having a hard time finding a course or a direction.

The idea of to regulate would be to help straighten something that's kind of wobbling, or like to straighten out on a bike, right? That's more of the meaning here, so that you don't fall over, to guide, to rule, to direct. So the royal person is someone who helps us find a center, and the center is what gives us a non-wobbly path. By that I mean, you know, not falling off your bike, but being able to ride it in a straight, balanced way. So the ruler is not originally or ideally a tyrant.

There's someone who helps establish a way, a path, and in order to do that, sometimes they become emblematic of things like rules or laws that are meant to help give that sense of direction, purpose, and to avoid catastrophe for a larger group. This is why when leaders fail at their responsibility, often communities of people who gather around that leader really fall into hard times, because when the leader fails at this, sometimes people can fall into crises of faith. You know, I saw my father go through this as a minister, Leo Moon.

So the royal function is alignment, alignment with what, with the heart, with the soul, with what is life giving, with what is good, with what is true, with what is beautiful. Now those are high ideals, high standards. Rarely can we meet all of those perfectly. It might even be problematic to try to do so. We should have a good sense of humor about ourselves. We should not be too hard on ourselves. We should not expect perfection. We should not be so heroic that we try to lead, but develop a big ego.

A lot of potential shadows around Jupiter in Leo, but the etymology is all, whether we're talking about the king, the crown, or royalty, or royal, is about service. It's about the ego finding its true sense of dignity, purpose, radiance, and beauty in wearing a crown of responsibility, where I am partially responsible for creating continuity, for creating alignment, for creating virtue and life and completion and wholeness, for others, not just for myself. And so that's the real paradox of Leo, is that it's a sign that frequently gets talked about as self-centered.

However, the ultimate meaning of the sign is about the self finding its center in service to the whole, which is why the polar opposite sign of Aquarius often creates this really important system of checks and balances for the ego, and it says there's a bigger collective out there, and if your ego is not finding a sense of responsibility or service to that bigger thing, and it's merely self-centered, then you're also going to alienate others. You're going to have narrow self-interest, and you're going to miss the opportunity to live for something that truly matters.

You're going to have invested in temporary vain outcomes, and that's the lesson of Leo and Aquarius, over and over again. And when we think about the word loyal, another etymology, legalis, the root of that word, unlike royal, which is rex, is lex. Royal in rex is king, but loyal is lex, which is law, and that means faithful to a law, a covenant, a promise, an oath, a dedication, a devotion to a person, to a cause. So the shadow of Leo is going to be like I'm loyal to me and nobody else, nothing else.

The wisdom of Leo says what makes me shine, what gathers me real, true lasting appreciation is my loyalty to principles that are shining. This is the shining principle: be heart-centered, be loving, be compassionate, be kind, be well-boundaried, but be easy, you know, be fluid, but be well contained. And in what you serve that's bigger than yourself, you will oftentimes find people who are glowing examples of these things are quite famous, quite well loved, quite popular, quite well liked.

But the way that they're able to sustain that is by saying it's not me, it's the beauty. What you're seeing is not me, it's my love of something that is so worth following and embodying and giving my life to. When you think about people who have really truly stirred your admiration, leaders, what we love about them is their love for what really matters, and that is a Leo lesson for all of us. In the year ahead, we can become loyal to the principles that make me worthy of being liked.

You know, it's that simple. True sovereignty - we talk about that word a lot, but true sovereignty is about loyalty to something bigger than self, because that means that we have located internal freedom to the extent that we recognize that anything that is of real value is of transcendental value, it's bigger than me and my power, and so I locate my power in my love and loyalty to it. And that might sound almost like monotheistic, right? And it can be a little, because of how focused it is, and it's a solar principle.

The sun is clearly associated with the one, and unity, and wholeness, and things that can almost smack a little monotheistic. However, this can be loyalty to whatever is important to your soul. It could be goddess, it could be your tribe or community that you belong to. It could be your mission as an educator, like, you know, it doesn't have to be God, you know, doesn't have to be like that. Not only that, but I think, you know, when I think of God on the monotheistic, not polytheistic side, I also think that God loves to play hide and seek.

And as soon as we get too overt or outward about what God is, I feel that God vanishes behind concepts and beliefs, and would usually prefer to be known and connected with through the embodiment of our love for divinity. You know, it's like in my experience, anyway, anytime I get too overt about God, my sense of connection to that source just kind of disappears, so I have to be very careful in sort of protecting it, which is a really funny thing, because people who shine with love of God are often not people who are really overt and directly talking about God at you.

They're people that just sort of exude a god consciousness, and so let the sun shine. Weirdly, when we talk about the sun too overtly, it vanishes. So this is another very important principle, which is that leaders, people who are famous in some way, are often famous because of their love for something that shines more than they do. Again, so there's something hidden in the shine. The ego finds its greatest sense of shine in the way it hides itself in its love for something bigger, right.

So there's the sun, the Old English sunne, and Helios is another word that's very fascinating, but anyway, illuminator, revealer, life giver, witness - all concepts associated with the sun etymologically. The sun sees, but the sun also reveals. Nothing can hide from the sunlight, but also things that are hidden become seen in a way. The most unique part of ourselves that we can find, that can be seen by others, and a lot of us really crave this in Leo. I want to be seen, I want to be loved, I want to be validated.

Well, the Leonine perspective, truly at its deepest level, is your beauty will be revealed to the extent that you fall in love with something that's bigger than yourself and your need to be liked and loved. It's just that simple. It seems like the universe is telling you you're not, you can't be special, but what it's actually telling us is the way that you love is your unique fingerprint. Love as uniquely as you can, and that is what makes you unique. It's the way you love that leaves your mark on creation.

Number two, the setting sun. Actually, what am I talking about? Sorry, back to etymology. Pride, here's another one. Sorry, I forgot I had more. Pride can mean excellence, distinction, magnificence, and elevated feeling. It comes from Old English, but only later in its history does it primarily become associated with arrogance. So, and we think about the word pride as also connected to a group of lions, or, you know, lions and lionesses, I guess. Anyhow, the idea of pride being that we find our excellence, magnificence, and sense of distinction in something outside of ourselves.

But that it grants us a sense of pride. Now, in the most cheap sense, this is like Downton Abbey, and the pride I feel by belonging to a rich family or something, and there is that, but what we're talking about on the level of pride, when it comes to our spirituality, is I belong to the citizens of light. You know, when I identify myself as someone who is completely devoted, as much as I can be, as imperfect as I am, but I am devoted to divinity, I'm devoted to love, I'm devoted to growing and learning.

I'm devoted to trying to do something good for others to the best of my ability, I'm devoted to the things I love and care about, because I find them so beautiful, that these grant a sense of, they instantly give you recognition, the ability to recognize others who are doing the same or feel the same, and you see yourself in them and them in you, and you're like, oh, hey, there's a light sister, you know, so that sense of pride is also something that helps us distinguish between things and people.

You can know and feel when someone is trying, not perfectly, but trying to live beyond themselves, and when they're invested in that, man, it's like instantly you're like, ooh, you shine. I like you. I feel like you're one of my people. So, paradoxically, the individual shine grants a sense of collectivity, and that's the hidden Aquarian dimension on the other side. The lion, Greek leone, and it also has associations with the word courage and core, as in heart and guardianship.

It's something the lion, like the lion, doesn't have to try to look like all of the things we're describing, it just is that way. It just embodies a lot of the qualities that everything we just talked about, in a sense. Just like just look at a lion, and they're just sitting there, kind of noble and proud, and there's something very solar about lions, and it's just very frontal, like you just see it and feel it and experience it, and you know the difference when you're experiencing someone who's a real lion or lioness in life.

The beauty, the pride, the distinction, the loyalty, the heart. You just feel it, and you go look at that beautiful soul. And lions just don't have to try to be that in a way. Neither do lionesses. You get the idea. All right. Well, let's go on now to the setting sun. Leo is ruled by the sun, but it comes in the middle of summer when the sun is slowly and steadily declining in its power and light. So it's a funny thing to place the rulership of the sun in a place of steady decline of light.

But this is the juxtaposition that's crucial to understanding the sign of Leo. Every day the sun sets. In the I Ching, there's a hexagram that speaks, hexagram 55 and there's others that speak to the sun at midday. Be like the sun at midday, do not lament the descent. You know the king will grow old, the kingdom will pass on, the crown will be transferred from one head to another. The lion eventually lies down, the light disappears into the west, but something will remain. The sun will rise again, the darkness will come, though.

So you could say that the immature or egotistical version of Leo says, How can I be remembered just me for something great that I do or represent, or my fame, or my money, or my wealth, or my power beyond my eventual death? It's just concern for personal legacy or personal wealth or power, and how can I hold that as long as possible, or how can I be sort of memorialized with some kind of statue, you know? But the mature Leo says, what did I serve, and will what I serve continue to be remembered because I helped.

So we don't seek immortality in the sign of Leo through image or ego, we seek it through participation in something eternal. In our concern for that eternal thing, we grab on its coattails when we pass out of this body, and it carries us like the rafts in Buddhism to the far shore. It carries us from the standpoint of ancient mysticism, it carries us into another lifetime in which the service continues, and it is that service that ferries us across the ocean of sorrow and suffering.

It's not that sorrow and suffering don't exist, don't have an important role. It's that our relationship with them makes the most sense when we're in service, when we are in service to the beautiful, the good, the true, the just, the whole. Well, there's also the matter of telos. This is unique to Jupiter, but Jupiter in Leo, it becomes really strong. Telos means end goal, fulfillment, or purpose. There's a whole branch of ancient philosophy called teleology. Some of the ancient texts were called apotelismatics, which means the study of outcomes.

The study of what something is and what it will become based on where it started, like a seed turning into the fruit or the tree. So, Jupiter in Leo will bring up natural questions for all of us as to what is our purpose, what is the end toward which we are aimed, what is my role, what am I here to embody, what responsibility comes, what crown do I wear? What kind of example am I setting? What deserves my loyalty, which means what do I find to be beautiful, good, and true, that I can fully in my heart get behind?

What crown am I carrying? What kingdom am I serving? These are really important. What kind of pride is healthy and good for my heart? You know, what kind of pride has become inflation? Do I have to weed out what remains meaningful when my life is done, and am I serving that? By serving that, we don't mean neglecting yourself, we mean loving something that you serve, so that it fills you as you fill it. That is a precious gift. It is the true gold, and it is the true crown.

Four things, or excuse me, number four on my list is things to watch for. These are just basic things that I think will come up for everyone. We're going to see that there's growing clarity, especially in the month of July and August, where we have a solar eclipse in Leo, about your life's purpose or mission. Just very basic. What am I here to serve? What am I here to do? What's my legacy that I'm here to fulfill? Well, maybe what role model, what role am I meant to embody, is a good example.

Questions about what your legacy is, or what you will leave behind. Questions about increased visibility or recognition, and how the ego is going to handle that. Opportunities to lead by example. Now, there's going to be challenges and shadows that involve ego inflation or grandiosity, and things that we've come to realize are investments that the ego has, but that the soul is not actually served by discovering. In other words, where your loyalty really belongs, and you can take on some new responsibilities that feel crown-like, a little heavy.

Reconciling ambition with service. It's not illegal to have ambitions, but can they be rooted in something we can serve that's bigger than just ourselves, not excluding ourselves, but just ourselves? Now, we also may have powerful encounters with mentors, leaders, and look in the collective, we are going to see some significant changes with respect to things like kings, queens, fathers, teachers, any kind of solar figure or archetype, especially in mid to late July.

Now, reflection on mortality and the finite nature of time, and that we have to aim our lives towards something beyond the expiration of our ego and its body, and we're going to learn the difference between feeling liked or popular and feeling like we're fulfilling something meaningful.
