Not merely the physical organ, but the throne of the soul—where pride, grief, old loyalties, and the craving for approval have accumulated. I explore ten conditions of the heart as metaphors: obstructions to generosity, rhythms distorted by social anxiety, exhaustion from overextending, and protective postures that have become inflamed.

If the protective sac around the heart becomes inflamed, it is often because we mistake pride, jealousy, or a grudge for strength. These postures do not shield us; they sicken what we are trying to guard. The eclipse asks: what are you protecting, and at what cost?

Hey everyone. This is Adam Elenbaas from Nightlight Astrology [https://nightlightastrology.com/].
Today we are going to sneak preview the next new moon, which is a solar eclipse in the sign of Leo. This is, of course, coming off from this week's full moon, which is a very powerful configuration that we spent the first part of the week talking about. I feel like now that that full moon has passed, a lot of us are probably still in the wake of that full moon. So be sure to check out the other videos I did earlier this week.
But I think it's a good time to start thinking about the fact that we're now entering eclipse season. So things are not necessarily settling down, especially not within the landscape of the zodiacal temple of Leo, the sign of the lion. So we're going to talk today about what South Node eclipses, both this summer and next summer, are likely to bring up when it comes to the karma of the heart. I think you'll enjoy this today. I got really creative with this episode, but I think it's really practical and good for students of astrology or people who just want some practical takeaways for their life.
So let's get into it. But before we do, remember to like and subscribe. If you share your comments, your reflections, tell a story in the comments section, give us the thumbs up, subscribe—it's free to do so. All of that really helps us grow and sustain this channel, so it's appreciated. You can find transcripts of any of these daily talks on the website. That's nightlightastrology.com.
I want to take you over to the website because registration is now open for our annual retreat next summer, August 7 through the 12th of 2027. The Oracle within our sort of annual Nightlight pilgrimage is taking place here in Minnesota, the beautiful countryside south of the Twin Cities. It's an easy central airport to locate with a quick ride to the retreat center. It's a beautiful, beautiful space. Really looking forward to it.
The retreat is now on sale. You can go to the events page, click on annual retreat, or the courses, click on annual retreat. Same page. It'll tell you everything there is to know about it. We've got a beautiful new little documentary video from this year's retreat that's up. You can check it out and see what the retreat looked like from this first time that we did it. Really excited to go back next year.
Everything you need to know about the retreat, the pricing, and the early bird sale is now available. So this is something where you can take advantage of the sale and save on the cost of the retreat significantly, hundreds of dollars before October 1. We are anticipating that we're going to fill up rather quickly. We have a lot of interest and a long waiting list of people who are waiting for us to release this, so be sure that you sign up quickly if you want to go. There are some payment plans available as well.
Other things to be aware of every day at Nightlight. There's free meditation. Go to Community Quiet under Events if you ever want to join us for meditation every single day at Nightlight. It's free. The schedule is on the Daily Quiet page, the Community Quiet page, I should say, and the Zoom link to join with the password is there, so you can always just sit with us quietly every morning. And that's literally like I go from sitting with all of you to creating my content for the day, so you can kind of feel like you're a part of the spiritual current within the channel, the spiritual practice of the channel, which I think is really cool to share with each other.
The final thing, final thing I want to mention is go to my books. You'll see that my book, The Oracle Speaks, is on sale. You haven't checked it out yet. I poured my heart and soul into this book. It is really everything I know about astrology, but it's in story form rather than textbook form. And I think that this was a really fun way for me to sort of bring everything that I've learned about astrology in 16 years of professional practice into a book, and I hope that you'll like it. I'm already starting on another one, so the writing train has left the station. But anyway, that's what's new at Nightlight.
Let's put Nachepso up on the screen. This is our affiliate software program, so you get 20% off if you want to try the chep, so the link to the discount, perpetual discount, it never ends, is in the description of the video or in the comments section. Guys are coming back out in August to tell us about some updates they've done to the program, which just keeps getting better. So, on that note, let me show you what we're looking at.
I want to first of all just, I mean, today, Thursday, July 30th, we're just a day out from that very powerful moon in Aquarius that we've spent most of the day talking about. But what happens when we advance the real time clock here, and the chapso takes us to the next new moon? The next new moon on Wednesday, August 12th, is going to be a solar eclipse in the sign of Leo. Now that the South Node has moved into the sign of Leo, this takes us into eclipse season.
Now the full moon after this will actually be out of sign. We'll have a full moon in Pisces. That full moon will be a lunar eclipse in the sign of Pisces. That's August 28, but it means we're in eclipse season. Either way, we are in eclipse season. So if we go back to this moment right now, we'll see that this solar eclipse takes place in Leo August 12. If I take this forward a year, we are going to back this up just a little bit. And we'll see that we also have a solar eclipse on Monday, August 2, 2027, with the South Node also in Leo. So two summers in a row with some powerful South Node eclipses in Leo.
Now, what I want to talk about today, I had really fun with this. I got really creative in thinking about. First of all, Leo in medical astrology rules the heart, but it's not just the literal medical physical organ of the body. It is also the metaphorical heart, and everyone who knows a little bit about astrology learns that pretty early on. Leo rules the heart, the heart and the spine. In some cases, you can look at that in medical astrology too.
But when I'm thinking about the South Node, anytime I'm thinking about it, I'm thinking about the resolution of attachments and the relinquishment of attachments that are very worldly that keep us anchored in this world. The South Node's job, in a way, is to turn our mind toward the divine, to turn our hearts toward things that are transcendental by helping us relinquish worldly and material things or attachments. That means that there's a lot of old karma that gets resolved with the South Node. There is sometimes an overly simplistic way of putting it, but there is a reorientation of the heart taking place.
We could say I think safely with these eclipses back to back in Augusts 2026 and 27. So what I did was I got curious to look at the most well known conditions or diseases or sicknesses, or afflictions of the heart, medically speaking, and then as I was looking at them, I tried to extrapolate metaphorically how those conditions of the heart might show up for us as conditions of the spiritual heart. So I have 10 of them for you today, and they're in no particular order, but I want to go through them and talk about them as metaphors for what we may experience starting with this solar eclipse in Leo.
Now, these are already things that we may very well be experiencing right now because of the Jupiter Cazimi, because of the Jupiter combustion, because of the Sun entering Leo and the full moon opposing that Jupiter Cazimi. In other words, we're well underway. The South Node has just moved into Leo. We've got an eclipse coming up in Leo, so it's not just on this eclipse. It's sort of like now we're in the season. We're in the window over the really the next year with the South Node moving through Leo, and two eclipses in Leo with the South Node where any of these things could be applicable.
Now, I don't want to scare you into thinking any of these afflictions could happen to you in some personal manner. Meaning, you're going to suffer a heart condition. I mean, some people may literally have heart issues when there's so much Leo karma. That is a thing, but I'm using these as metaphors. So please filter that and don't let yourself take it literally, but let's talk about them. So obviously, the big one are heart attacks. But what is a heart attack? It is an obstruction. The basic definition that I found of a heart attack is something that has accumulated over time that blocks the heart, and it's an obstruction.
So we could very well extrapolate from that metaphorically that old wounds, old ego issues, old pride, old resentments, old grudges, old things that have blocked the circulation of free-flowing, generous life in the heart, may become sources of affliction and may need to be removed. A heart attack would be an episode or an event where that obstruction becomes an unavoidable encounter, an unavoidable spiritual crisis. Number two is a cardiac arrest. The definition I found is that the heart's electrical command fails and its pumping stops. A cardiac arrest. That was the definition that I found.
If we take that metaphorically, if we think of the sun as an organizing center—Stephen Forrest put it this way once, and I never forgot it: the organizing center of identity, purpose, authority, the little throne room of the spirit soul in the body. If that organizing center suddenly goes dark, then we can fall off our throne. A cardiac arrest in this metaphorical and spiritual sense would be that the good things that the center that organize and give life and purpose and authority from not authority over someone else, but a sense of being the captain of our own ship. If there's something that goes wrong with it, if we fall out of that place, that can be a spiritual cardiac arrest, and we have to find our way back there.
Number three, angina. So this is medically the definition I found was basically the heart doesn't receive enough oxygen when it's exerting itself. Okay, that's interesting. So metaphorically, how could we think about that? We keep performing and carrying out responsibilities, obligations, or duties, without being able to receive nourishment from it. In other words, we exert ourselves with heart, but we aren't sustained by the exertion. And ideally, we should be. Not everything in life is going to be fun. There are sacrifices, so not everything is going to be perfectly reciprocal.
I remember changing diapers as a young dad and just being like, "This is just a thankless task. There's nothing like super fun about it, but there's this sense in your heart that you're doing it for the right reasons." The sacrifice, in other words, can sustain you because there's something of worth in it. Well, I was thinking about angina and thinking about metaphorically, if we keep doing things from the heart but not receiving something that genuinely sustains us in response, it's like not receiving enough oxygen during exertion. Could that be something metaphorically that we're dealing with in the year ahead.
How about arrhythmia? So arrhythmia is the heartbeat becoming irregular, which can be too fast or too slow. And then I thought about that metaphorically. If we are living according to—and a lot of us do this according to social expectations, or the need to be liked or approved of—if we're living with a sense of urgency or social anxiety, or we're living out of our own rhythm, according to someone else's timing, or someone else's approval, or something else's validation, to an extreme, then the heart gets out of rhythm. So I was thinking about rhythm in terms of getting out of rhythm because we can't find and stick with our own rhythm—arrhythmia of the spiritual heart.
How about heart failure? So, heart failure, as I understand it, is the heart is beating, but just can't adequately supply the body. And so, this to me is like an exhausted king or queen on the throne. If you have spent so long trying to sustain everyone and everything else, but you can't take care of them, and you can't take care of yourself, that heart failure is like you just can't do it all anymore. You're overextending yourself somehow and exhausting yourself. Your supply can't meet the demand, and there needs to be a reevaluation of what your supply is and what you can actually fulfill and what you can't.
So I think a little bit about overpromising and re-evaluating what we can and can't do based on what actual supply we have. Heart failure. Now these are imperfect metaphors. Play with them yourself, maybe. But how about enlarged heart? The heart grows larger because it's been forced to work too hard. That's what I found a basic idea behind enlarged heart. Now, again, this is just my layman's understanding. Just doing, I actually looked at a website that had all of these disorders of the heart explained, and there was actually a ton. I only picked 10, but I picked ones that I think everyone's probably heard of.
So metaphorically, what is an enlarged heart? It could be grandiosity. You become too grandiose. You become inflated. You become prideful. You become egotistical. That may need to come back into right size somehow to take inflation down. But when I thought about the enlarged heart, I also thought about overworking, needing to be the hero, needing to be the savior, needing to be the saint, rescuing people, overly responsible again, sort of like the overextended ruler. If you're too generous, if you overextend, and if you're trying to derive your value from that, you actually weaken yourself through that overextension. So an enlarged heart.
Number seven on my list was broken heart syndrome. I didn't even know this existed. This is fascinating. Not in like a fun way, but it's fascinating to me that it exists. So, it's intense stress that temporarily disrupts the heart's ability to pump, and people can actually die from this when they're grieving. You've heard of people dying of a broken heart after they lose someone or they go through acute trauma loss of someone or something. This is a real thing. So it's intense stress that temporarily disrupts the heart's ability to pump.
Well, metaphorically, that one to me is pretty easy: grief, humiliation, shock, embarrassment, stress, self-esteem, trauma, and the potential to become broken-hearted. And to become broken hearted doesn't mean you can't heal it, but the task may be a real healing intervention of a broken heart. Number eight is called valve stenosis. It's when a valve narrows and restricts forward blood flow. So it's like almost like a heart that cannot open. There's narrowing and restriction. So metaphorically, do you have a hard heart? Do you have some kind of protectiveness or barriers to love or suspicion or cynicism or doubt that has closed off or walled off the heart in sort of narrowed flow—creativity, generosity, open heartedness has hardened or rigidified.
See, this valve stenosis is a spiritual valve stenosis, you could say. Well, then I have valve regurgitation. I didn't know what this was either. This is a heart that can't close. It's a valve that fails to close properly, allowing blood to flow backward. This was too rich metaphorically not to use, even though I'd never even heard of it before. Metaphorically, I was thinking about the heart that can't let go of the past, especially when you can't let go of a relationship or an old trauma or an old identity or loyalty to something in the past that's not allowing you to close down and let someone go, and then blood can flow backward, and I just was like, wow, yeah. Going into the past, the heart's pains in the past that it has to let go of, and maybe getting stuck.
And then finally pericarditis. This is the protective sac that surrounds the heart becomes inflamed. First of all, I didn't even know there was a protective sac around the heart, so that was interesting for me to learn about. I was like, "Ooh, that's kind of rich." But when the protective sac that's meant to be a barrier becomes inflamed, think about the different ways that we have of trying to protect our hearts: pride, arrogance, hypervigilance, jealousy, self-importance. I mean, you can think of a million things—moods or emotions or mental or emotional states that we get into that are meant, we think, to protect us. This is a strong posture to assume, but assuming those things actually takes the protective layer and makes it inflamed. Holding a grudge—you think it protects my heart because my dignity was damaged, but holding a grudge is actually taking the protective mechanism and making it sick. Isn't that interesting? Pericarditis.
So what's on the list? There are obstructions. There are rhythm problems. There are issues of overwhelm, overextension, exhaustion. There's opening and closing the heart. There's protection of the heart, and then there are questions about what is the healthy heart? What is the healthy rhythm? What is the healthy amount of exertion? What is the healthy rhythm of opening and closing? What is healthy protection? So, it's my hope that this simple and hopefully creative and fun exercise just gives us a way of entering into a meaningful period of time where the heart is a focus spiritually, symbolically, perhaps literally in some cases.
I was surprised as soon as Jupiter, as soon as the Sun entered Leo, someone that I know at a friend and acquaintance level of things got in touch to let me know that a family member underwent a cardiac episode as soon as the Sun entered Leo and started the combustion with Jupiter. So that heart issue came up right away. Just made itself present in my awareness within an hour, in fact, of the Sun entering Leo, and that's where I actually got this idea from because there was a specific word I had never heard before about a heart condition that they discovered. Thankfully, the person's okay, and I thought, huh, let's play with this a little bit, Leo season.
So, from my heart to yours, I hope that all of us learn how to keep healthy, sacred, protected, beautiful heart spaces, and that we can heal hearts if they need healing. We can hopefully help each other do that on this channel, and certainly in our daily meditation community, the Nightlight programs. I think that's a good thing for us to try to help each other with. So, anyway, to that end, I hope you're having a beautiful day and that your heart is happy and well. And we'll see you again tomorrow. Bye.

Hello Adam,
I found this episode fascinating. My experience might provide some interesting data in light of the current astrological weather.
I have lived for over 7 decades with a congenital (inherited) heart disease called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Sometime within the last 6 months, the disease progressed in a noteworthy way, and I am involved in daily exercise and medication experimentation, under the guidance of expert cardiologists at a leading hospital, to find some kind of balance that may prolong my life.
Needless to say, for various reasons, including the great mystery of karma and others stemming from the congenital disease itself and medical error, I experience most of the types of cardiac challenge that you listed in your talk. The sign of Leo is in my natal sixth house, so the 6th-12th house opposition under these transits and with the nodes is quite alive.
I am well aware that I may not survive this period of time, yet people who do not know me as a close friend give me feedback that I appear vitally alive, strong and robust. Interesting illusion, right?
I live and have lived with the possibility of sudden cardiac death.
Included in my healing focus right now is a deep, compassionate gesture of inquiry toward my ‘father lineage’ as I inherited this disease from my father. (I know this as a result of genetic testing.) I have made an altar to my father and his mother, both who died quite young and likely as a result of this disease which was not named during their lifetimes. Soon I will also do at least one deep session of somatic therapy and depth hypnosis which may bring me closer to heart-centered embodied understanding and perhaps release, with an awareness/experience of healing not attached to any physical improvement.
The underlying tenor of my days is joyful (natal sun in Cancer in the 5th house in a four-planet stellium.) This is not to say that I do not experience a full range of emotions in relation to my situation, but it seems that I natively return to joy. And so it goes.
