What does it mean when the scales tip and the light begins to surrender?
In this podcast episode, I explore the hidden meaning of the Libra equinox—the fall equinox—not as a cliché about balance, but as a threshold where beauty, limitation, consequence, and love meet.
You are invited to see Libra season as a descent into the soul’s interior: the harvest, the fading light, the quiet necessity of darkness.
We look at Venus and Saturn as co-hosts of Libra, the fleeting nature of equilibrium, and why relationship begins where self-sufficiency ends.

Hey everyone. This is Adam Elenbaas from Nightlight Astrology [https://nightlightastrology.com/].
Today we're going to talk about the sun moving on to zero Libra. That's the fall equinox here in the northern hemisphere. More deeply, I want to talk about the symbolism of Libra and where it comes from in relation to the symbolism of the solar year. This is not something that needs to be taken literally. In other words, this symbolism can apply and be understood and used regardless of which hemisphere you live in.
But we're going to talk today about some of the symbolism of Libra and the fall equinox moment, and how the story of light and dark maps onto the zodiac and gives us some really beautiful, intimate archetypes and placements. Like, why are Venus and Saturn placed as the co-hosts of Libra? There's a reason for that. We're going to get into it today.
So, I hope that you'll find this a useful meditation on the equinox and on the sign of Libra in general. You can learn something new about Libra because one of the things that I can't stand is when my astrological vocabulary feels like it's not growing or changing, and I only have the same ideas, thoughts, or words to say about the signs, or the planets, or houses, or what have you.
So I always like finding new ways to think about things. Keep turning that jewel, as we like to say on the channel. So that's what we're going to do today. But before we get into it, remember to like and subscribe. It helps us grow tremendously if you give us a little thumbs up every day. It's free to subscribe. We're trying to get to 100,000 subscribers.
We are almost there. In fact, I had set a goal for us about a year ago to get there by the summer when we have a few days left. Let's see if we can do it. Transcripts of any of these daily talks can be found on the website. That's nightlightastrology.com. Couple of promotions for the day. I'm going to take you over to the website. Let's see here.
Okay, so once you're over there, the main thing I want to point out today is the year one course is coming up. Starts again on November 14th. Go to the courses page. Click on first year course. There's an informational video tagged on to the end of every daily content between now and the start of the class, so that if you want to learn more about it, you just stick around and I'll tell you everything there is to know about the program.
We are now APAI certified, so that means that our school is able to grant people certification through one of the more well-known, well-respected certifying or crediting bodies in the world. That's a really great thing for us. We're really excited about it, but also is good for you if you want to study and get really nice professional accreditation through our programs. So check that out.
The early bird sale is in effect. Need-based tuition is there. So if you're someone who likes to study but you need a flexible price point because you're on a fixed or limited income or experiencing financial hardship, that's there for you. So check it all out. Go to the Book of Readings tab. My readings are back open. Oracle readings, I'm calling them.
It's basically a la carte, which means you just tell me when you fill out the form exactly what you want me to do, and that's what I'll do. If it's a year ahead, if it's a solar return, if it's a specific predictive question, or maybe it's a broader question about life purpose, or you just want a general read of your birth chart, whatever it is, you just tell me when you fill out the form.
That's what I'll do for you. There's also horary readings and then need-based readings. If my price point is inaccessible, please do check out the need-based astrology readings with our staff at different tiered pricing. What else? If you go to the shop page and click on my books, the Audible version of my book is now out.
You can follow the audio book link there on the page, and it'll take you over to the Amazon Audible space, and you can pick it up there. There's wait. Here's the audio book. Yeah, so that's cool, and I've already gotten some feedback from people who are reading it. That makes me really happy. What else? Let's go back to the website, and you can go to community, or actually the annual retreat.
That's the last thing. We have a retreat next August here in Minneapolis. Informational meeting Sunday the 27th at 330 p.m. Eastern. It's free to attend if you want to learn more about this training and divination. The early bird sale for the retreat ends soon in October, so you have a little bit more time to take advantage of that. Hope to see some of you there.
All right, let's flip over to Nichepso. This is our official astrology software program. Discount code is in the description of the video, and the sun is at zero Libra. Now that would be happening really yesterday, the 22nd into the 23rd, depending on your time zone. So we will, if I back this up just slightly, you can see that the zero Libra ingress technically happens right about 7 o'clock Central Time, Tuesday, September 22.
But then the sun goes through that zero degree marker all day today, Wednesday, September 23. So what I want to do today is talk about the sign of Libra and the fall equinox. I want to say a few things about light and dark in the zodiac, and give you five hidden meanings of Libra that I don't think get talked about enough.
All of which come from the meaning of this point in time along the in the solar year as seen from the northern hemisphere, but here's the thing: people frequently think that you need to flip the zodiac for the southern hemisphere in order for the zodiac to be effective, but that is not, in my experience, true or necessary. And I'll explain why very briefly because I know that there's bound to be questions about this.
So before we go anywhere, let's talk about that. The reason, in my opinion, that you don't need to flip the zodiac for hemispheres is because the zodiac is symbolic, not causal. What that means is that the zodiac is like a tarot deck in the sky. It is logical. It is rooted in astronomically observable patterns, but the orientation of those patterns is relative, which means it's not anchored.
We shouldn't be thinking about it as a causal paradigm that needs to be anchored in an objective way. In other words, the story of the zodiac and its orientation, as seen from the northern hemisphere, is the story of the alternation of light and dark in a solar year, as seen from a particular vantage point, which gives us a zodiacal mapping language, whose symbolic orientation comes from this relative space on planet Earth.
But that symbolic orientation can be applied anywhere, because anyone on planet Earth can be born in some space relative to its orientation, and so its orientation being symbolic makes your relative orientation to it just fine. I know that for some people that might be sort of like mind bending, but another example of this would be like in acupuncture, in Chinese medicine, in Ayurveda, and all sorts of different modalities.
Seasonal mapping takes place in a symbolic manner that you don't have to reorient, like you don't have to reorient meridian lines in your body when you're receiving acupuncture if you're not from the same hemisphere that the orientation comes from, right? So, and I'm laughing just because everyone wants this to be a hard science, but it's not a hard science. It has a different kind of epistemology.
So does all divination. It's more like a dream language that's rooted in patterns in the sky, but their orientation being relative is not a big deal. That's the same. It's the same exact reason why you can use many different house systems. Why there's nothing particularly causal or logical about mapping future transits of planets to an artificially frozen moment in time in the past.
Like think about it. What's causal about that? If anything, it's a weird exploration of retro causality that we're not even really talking about. That's transits for you. We can also take zodiacs. We can take the sidereal zodiac. We can take different versions of the sidereal zodiac. We can take the tropical zodiac. Different house systems. So there's different ways of mapping everything in astrology.
Anyway, my encouragement for you is to not freak out if you're in the southern hemisphere, because I really, I've had at least 1000 clients over the course of my career who have been in the southern hemisphere and have had no problem having their lives and their paths mapped by the symbolic orientation of the Western tropical zodiac from that orientation is the Northern Hemisphere.
So, but seasonally speaking, the metaphors I'm using today are just that they're metaphors. So keep that in mind. All right, now that qualifier aside, let's get into five things to watch for when we are at equinox or fall equinox or Libra season that you may not think about all of the time. Libra is not just about the balance of light and dark; it's actually a moment in the solar year when the balance that's occurring—we're moving from the light half of the year, Aries through Virgo, to the dark half of the year, Libra through Pisces.
That's the northern hemisphere symbolic orientation of the story of the zodiac. Now, what we're really talking about, though, is again symbolic, and it's not just about balance. Like everyone wants to say that Libra is about balance, but it's only about balance if by balance you mean that the second half of the year will be dark where the first half was light.
So yes, it's about balance, but it's also about reminding us that you can't stay in light forever. It's in other words, it's about the necessity of darkness, and that is the balance. The equality is achieved only very momentarily. So the first point I want to make is that balance is a gateway. The scales are balanced precisely at the moment of the fall equinox in Libra, but it's not permanent.
You're not just going to stay in this perfect equilibrium. In fact, the rest of the sign of Libra is about the scales tipping into darkness, and the dark half of the year becomes a greater story of balance. The light, in other words, light and dark are equal for only kind of an instant in the first degree of Libra, basically.
Now, that means that we're actually moving into the dominant phase of darkness. So balance is never an end state. That's really important because one of the deeper lessons that Libra will learn and embody in their lifetime, Libra energy, we might say, is that you cannot have permanent equality. Equality is something that is achieved very rarely and in a very fleeting manner, and then movement continues.
One condition will always be transforming into another, and this makes Libra actually a very kind of liminal sign. The balance of Libra doesn't abolish opposites by perfectly equalizing them. It actually creates a very deep, meaningful point of exchange between them. True balance, in other words, includes imbalance because life keeps moving, and so the majority of Libra is not about balance, but about imbalance.
In so far as now it has to be dark because it was light. So a deep Libra lesson is about going from how do I get everything balanced to how do I live with the rarity of balance and the dominance of imbalance? Because most of the year is either dark or light. Very few moments of the year are a perfect balancing of light and dark, so life doesn't stand still, and balance would require that it does.
Hormones fluctuate, emotions fluctuate, the environment fluctuates. Balance is a kind of Libran ideal, but a deep lesson that's in and behind Libra is about living with imbalance and living with alternation, the give and take, and that's a deeper lesson about balance that often we're learning in Libran seasons. All right. Well, number two is darkness as interior, not just darkness as some kind of evil, or like putting dark.
When we think about darkness as a moral thing, then we think of it as evil or bad or wrong, or you know, dark is like that. So what we mean here is a little bit deeper. So when we're talking about the movement into darkness, there are other ways of thinking about this. That it's almost like we're having to learn when we're in a Libran season, or we have Libra planets in our chart in some area.
The movement into darkness can be movement from something like manifestation, clarity, understanding into mystery or obscurity, darkness. In other words, it doesn't have to mean just like evil or mean or ignorant or depression or negativity or failure or something like that or suffering. Darkness in nature, if you look at it just objectively, can mean gestation. It can mean sleep. It can mean roots and seeds and decomposition as a part of the cycle of life.
It can mean secrecy, interiority. It can be about dreaming, death, and the regeneration that comes through the darkness makes darkness something that is absolutely not just a moral category or something evil, because the dark half of the year, the dark half of the day, the dark half in general. If we think of it as just yin, draws life back down and in beneath or beyond the realm of appearances or conscious awareness or control.
This is also a lesson that we're often learning in Libran seasons of life, which is that this not knowing, this not being in control, this something that goes deeper than appearances is the real place of wisdom, and this is why you know the lady justice has the blindfold on on one level. It's about being objective and like objectively weighing the facts or something, but it's actually also about real wisdom and real discernment being something deeply interior that draws on a different way of seeing or knowing.
This is also why the heart balanced against the feather on the scales is paradoxical. You can't have a physical heart ever be lighter than a feather in the Egyptian Hall of Maat. But that kind of judgment requires a different form of measurement. And notice that Libra begins this sort of descent into the underworld, the subterranean, the unconscious, the depths, the mystery, through the rulership of Venus.
It's there's a ripeness about this time of year, which is why we also associate it with the harvest in the seasonal sense of it. This is also Saturn's domain. Things reach their limit. This is the sign farthest from the sun's exaltation in Aries, polar opposite. Aries, the light rising, light dominance taking over Saturn. Maximal extension across the circle, the diameter. Maximal extension across the circle.
We reach the limit of the light and the rise of dark, and it's also the place of Venus. When things have reached their limit, they're at the most their peak stage of ripeness or beauty. So we have a Venus Saturn pairing that speaks to things being ripe and full and beautiful, but also reaching their maximal potential limit. I mean, you can think about that bottle of wine that reaches like its peak state, and then it can only be enjoyed from like this time to this time.
That is a perfect moment. That's very very fleeting. And Libra energy is about recognizing that such states exist. Such states are worth building or cultivating, but also they are fleeting, and death is very close behind them. It's like almost indistinguishable between something's peak moment of rightness and the beginning of its rot or its decay.
So we have a lot of very subtle Venus Saturn dynamics going on where darkness really means interiority, and it means that there's this juxtaposition that has to be held psychically in our lives between something reaching its maximal maturity or beauty or sophistication and its inevitable death, and the going inward that has to happen. Again, so beauty and mortality or death are closely linked together in this sign, which is why you'll often find that Librans have this very like soft, eloquent, sort of sad relationship with beauty.
Like black and white photography is something I've long noticed is very Libran. I think that's because Libras have this specific eye for beauty at its peak, really close to the moment of death and mortality. So, this is a sign that's about interiority and the closeness between something ideal and the death that comes right after, and that's a pretty deep interior space that has to be cultivated in Libra, in contrast to just superficial obsession with fleeting moments of perfection, or sort of shallow sophistication, or social poise, or something like that.
Now, number three on my list is beauty and limit. Now, again, we just said Saturn is exalted in this sign, and Venus is the domicile ruler, and so Saturn is this planet of boundary and limit, and it's finitude, finitude, yeah. Saturn, a planet of necessity, consequence, time, aging, separation. Saturn likes to define things as they are, like apart and sort of well boundaryed.
Venus, on the other hand, a planet, especially in Libra, of proportion and symmetry and harmony and esthetic and agreement. And some people, I mean, many people in my programs will be like, why are these two signs? Why are these two planets placed together in this sign? And it's because without Saturn, that Venusian harmony has no structure. Like beautiful things require boundaries. A song requires meter and some sense of duration. It doesn't go on forever.
A painting requires a frame. I guess. I mean, these are just like loose ideas, but a relationship requires certain kinds of agreements and sort of like contracts. A garden requires pruning if you're going to keep it as. I mean, if you're not just going to let it, you know, grow wild, which is cool. But a life for it to be special.
And sacred for all of us is made so because of the proximity that of death. Like we're all going to die, and that's what makes it sort of beautiful. So, and on the other hand, Saturn in Libra suggests that limitation in reaching something's maximum extension can be eloquent and beautiful and sort of just like you reap what you sow, and that doesn't have to be that.
In other words, there's a built-in there's a kind of intelligence to the way that things flower and blossom at their the harvest moment at their maximal limit from the seed, and there's a beauty there that can be gathered, harvested, tasted, enjoyed, celebrated. But it's again, it's like sweetest just at the time where it's at total completion.
So there's something about Libra that's also very discerning, like knowing when enough is enough, knowing when beauty has reached its limit, knowing when you're saying too much, knowing when you're acting in a certain way and pulling back. Like Librans have great restraint when it comes to knowing how much is enough and how much is too much. This is why Librans love to pair with Leos, by the way, because the Leo kind of just celebrates too muchness, like just turn that light up, you know, and just exude light.
And I think those are the sun is in its fall in Libra, and it's kind of like, well, like let's not go too far here. And so sometimes these signs really complement one another. The limit is the place at which something reaches its maximal potential, and that's that sense of perfectionism that is very Libran. Liz Green famously said, "People always say that Virgo is a perfectionist. I don't think so. I think it's Libra," and that was just like a little quip that she had.
But these two signs also share a contra anticia and have a lot in common. All right. Well, the next one on my list is consequence. This sign is so much about consequence, not just fairness. So there's a mysterious law in the cosmos that so many people have commented on it's cosmic justice, cosmic law, karma, the law of Zeus. I was thinking about that after seeing the Odyssey lately, but that doesn't mean it's not the same thing as fairness in the conscious, moral, controlled, like legal system sense of it.
So scales historically do not symbolize interpersonal fairness. They symbolize measurement. They symbolize value, and they symbolize exchange and judgment. To weigh something is really about what is it worth, or what consequences come about because of how it's measured against something else, this means that if we think about the scale as being about choices that place weight on the scales, every relationship in our life, every pursuit and ambition involves exchange.
We give and receive. We have obligations, and we have a certain amount of freedom. We have a certain amount of sacrifice, and we have a certain amount of reward that comes from the sacrifices that we make. Saturn in this sign is really bringing the idea that actions mature in consec in the form of consequences through time.
Venus will add a relational dimension to this, where whatever consequences build through repetitive habits and choices over time have a relational dimension to them, and so it gives Libra this karmic quality that's not just like punitive and it's not about a justice that's easy to always see or understand. It basically means that nothing exists without choice, habit, and outcome, and or relationship and consequence.
Harvest is karmic imagery. In other words, eventually we encounter what has grown from what has been planted, and that doesn't just equate into some simple moral formula where, well, you got what you deserved—it's much more mysterious than that, and it seems to have humor, and there's some absurdity, and a bit of chaos magic, and a bit of the butterfly effect going on.
And you can't clearly understand all of it, but you can see and sense that there is an intelligence behind the way that we make choices over time, they build and develop different kinds of relationships, and they all have different consequences in a sense of times when we harvest those processes. So it's not just have I been good or bad. It's sort of like what has the past produced, and then we get to reflect upon that and learn and grow.
Not just because it was all in our control either, not just as a matter of taking responsibility or something like that. All right. Finally, love and death. Libra is really a sign that teaches us that relationships begin specifically at the opposite point of Aries, right where self-sufficiency ends. Now, to truly encounter another being and to have intimacy and love, the fantasy of being completely autonomous has to die.
That's just the truth of it. Relationships will require compromise. They will require ongoing acts of reciprocity, promises, oaths, vows, some measure of restraint, self-sacrifice. These are all Saturnian and Venusian realities. That naturally means that love limits us. Right? Love is going to put boundaries and parameters around us, and some of those are going to be voluntarily chosen, and others are going to be unconsciously chosen.
And so, when we choose someone, and we choose to enter into bonds and soul contracts with another living being, there will be a death in that, and the death. Even if you choose the best person for all the right reasons, in a minor or minimal amount of like unconscious baggage that comes up, that because you know doesn't you don't end up getting divorced or you end up being together a really long time or whatever, it's mostly good.
Even then, still the relationship will end, and there will be a harvest in it on the level of the soul, and many relationships we choose become ways by means of which we come to see and have wisdom that we couldn't see because we chose something in a form and an image that we didn't have insight. We didn't have any further or deeper insight into at the time we chose it.
The beautiful thing becomes precious because it can't be possessed forever. The beautiful thing becomes precious because we couldn't see why we were getting into it in the first place, and as it reveals itself to us, it breaks our heart and opens our heart and heals our heart. If we get into something and we couldn't see what it was and we have to get out of it, it breaks our heart.
It opens our heart. It teaches us deeper wisdom and discernment about who and what we love and why and how. So Libra's secret is really that beauty, love, justice—these words that we toss around—and mortality all come from the mystery of having to face limits and reconcile with the world, as opposed to the ideal of perfection, which is the perfect equinox balancing of light and dark, but really the majority of Libra is taking us into the darkness.
Well, I hope that this has been I don't know fun, enlightening, interesting. I hope you're having a great day. That whatever you're, yeah, whatever you're doing for the equinox, that you know, mark it out as a ritual. Take some time with it, even if it's a different season in the southern hemisphere. You can still take time to recognize the transition that you're in, and I don't think it.
I don't think you have to pretend like you're living in the fall equinox right now, if you're in the southern hemisphere, you can celebrate the return of light in your own way. If that's what's going on, and then as a student of astrology, you can think about the symbolism of the sun moving into Libra in a symbolic way, right? So, anyway, hope this is useful. Hope you're all having a great day. Stick around. I'm going to tell you about the year one program next. It is coming up soon. You should come study with us. All right, bye.
