Hey everyone. This is Adam Elenbaas from Nightlight Astrology [https://nightlightastrology.com/].
Happy Friday. Today we're going to talk about the upcoming square between Mars and Pluto. This is one of the most dynamic and intense planetary combinations. Every time these planets get together, shit really hits the fan. I'm just going to be honest about it.
You know what? I'm not someone who sensationalizes content for the most part, I can get a little dramatic at times, but I'm not being dramatic when I say that these squares, they're a doozy, the oppositions, the conjunctions, even to a certain extent, all the hard aspects. Basically, we're going to talk about that today, and I'm going to be honest with you.
As I was writing today's talk, I couldn't fit it into the five things to watch for, so I'm just going to go off like Mars Pluto, I'm going to come uncorked today and try to resemble the force and intensity, because when I wrote this, that's what happened. I sort of just got captured by things, and I just want to, I'm just going to show you what I'm going to dump it all out on the table.
So, I hope that you will enjoy this, and that it will also help you interact more intelligently, more thoughtfully, from the heart with this transit, because the last thing I want this to do is be something that freaks people out. We want to talk about what is notably difficult or scary about this transit, but also why it exists in the first place, from an evolutionary perspective, from a spiritual perspective.
So, before we get into it, as always, remember to like and subscribe. It's free to subscribe, in case you don't know that someone recently told me they didn't know that it was free to subscribe. Yeah, it's totally free. It just helps us, so it really is a win-win. If you like the channel, transcripts of any of these daily talks can be found on the website nightlightastrology.com.
Couple of promotions for the day. The first one is that, as you know, I've been promoting my new book, The Oracle Speaks. It is finally out after two and a half years of work, slow, gradual progress. You know, my mind, a creative process that takes a long time. There's nothing more rewarding, and also at times more frustrating.
Click on the shop page, go to my books, you'll see The Oracle Speaks. This is a collection of stories. If you like the kind of storytelling that I often share about my life, and just little anecdotes that are scattered throughout the way that I present astrology context, I think you'll love this book. My background is in creative writing, I was an English teacher, and did a couple of graduate degrees in creative writing, and I really consider myself an astrological storyteller.
I think astrology has always been a kind of shamanic form of storytelling, if I can be so casual as to use that phrase. This is a collection of stories that are meant to convey the mystical experience of spirit speaking to us through signs, symbols, and omens, much more so than it is an astrology textbook. I think you'll love it if you read it, and you think to take a picture of yourself or with the book somewhere.
Tag us on Instagram, help us get the word out at Nightlight astrology.com. Really appreciate that. First year course comes up in June. Click on the courses page, learn more about it. Ancient astrology for the modern mystic starts June 28. Early bird sales is in effect now, as are the need-based tuition openings, so if you'd like to use need-based tuition because you're hurting a bit financially, or just strapped, we understand.
We want to make sure that people are able to study something sacred and not be priced out. So, we've always had flexible pricing. It's a real part of our mission and vision. And actually, if you read the book, you'll find out exactly why and where that comes from; it's a big part of the book. So, anyway, I will tell you more about the first year course at the end of today's talk.
There'll be a little additional informational video events page, click on community quiet daily meditation at nightlight. You can come meditate with us seven days a week, just free on Zoom. A bunch of crazy people sitting together quietly, no doctrines or dogmas, just the sitting. So that's it for promotions.
I want to bring up Necep, so of course that's our affiliate software program. We love this new cutting edge program. We're promoting it to all of our students and all of our classes. It's really about leading the conversation about emerging technology and astrology applications, and doing that from the standpoint of people who actually care about astrology.
So the chapter is a great example of people I know who are doing this that I really care to support. The affiliate link to get a good discount on the program is in the comment section or in the description of the video, it's 20% off, you get all right. Well, here you can see now my epic pen, what will it be? What will it be? Yep, okay, it's gonna work.
So, Mars squaring Pluto, the epic pen was like, I don't want to piss him off, he's been all uncorked writing about Mars Pluto. So, Mars about two degrees away from Pluto in Taurus, Pluto in Aquarius, and the two are coming into the square by Monday, so we're going to see them gradually working together. By Sunday, they're within about a degree. By Monday, they come on to the same degree. By Tuesday, they're just separating.
Let's give them about three degrees of separation, and you'll see that that three degrees is by the end of the week. That means we have about a full week of Mars being within three degree engagement range that ancient astrologers considered the crucial timing period where acute manifestations of the symbols, their interactions arise. Now, if you paid attention this week to the little lesson we did on inferior and superior aspect dynamics, then you may also notice that Pluto is prior in order of signs rising, which means Pluto in Aquarius sets the precedent.
So all of the fun, crazy Pluto in Aquarius stuff is - I'll just leave it at that - is setting the stage for what Mars in Taurus is walking into. We've got an earth-air combination. We've actually talked about that on the channel over the past couple of months in a few different ways, but what I want to do is more generally, I want to talk about why shit hits the fan when these two planets get together.
Why is it the case that this particular astrological combination is so transformative, so powerful. Sometimes let's be real: violent. So, what is that about? Well, let's talk about it from a few different perspectives. So, I've got a lot here that I just stream of consciousness wrote down for my notes today. First of all, Mars frequently is going to be the planet that represents willpower, and Pluto, especially in the evolutionary modern evolutionary tradition, represents the force of evolution.
What is evolution? It means the constant transformation and unfolding of things, that things are in a process of unfolding, that it's like a flower, and it unfolds and unfurls, that the cosmos is in this constant state of unfurling and unfolding itself from within, and the drive of that is thought to be plutonian. Well, when you put willpower with that force of evolution, then you have desire and assertiveness and force and things like survival instincts and conflict and the drive to act coming into contact with the force of evolution.
That means that evolution will often unfold along the lines of Mars: it will be desire, it will be assertion, force, survival, conflict, the urge to act, the impulse or drive to act. That will be the way in which things unfold and evolve, and everything must evolve, and death is one way in which things also evolve. Mars cutting and severing is therefore at the force of the evolutionary impulse at the moment.
Pluto will also intensify things, expose things, purge things, compel and transform things from subterranean spaces up into visible spaces, and so when these two meet, actions, desire, assertion, and force often compel things to transform and be exposed and reveal themselves in very powerful ways. This is why simmering hatreds or dislikes or conflicts that are kind of stirring beneath the surface will often actualize and explode.
Small conflicts can reveal much deeper layers, in other words, of fear, of control, of possession, of obsession, of taboo, of resentment, of the need or urge to survive or to dominate. Mars wants some of these things, and Pluto is creating evolution by means of these things. So you can see that's why it's so dynamic now. The other thing is that Mars-Pluto combinations often correlate with conflicts of power struggles, battles of will, dominance contests, being territorial, confrontations with authority, battles of will, and power struggles.
These things come up because Mars is trying to be the one that drives the course of evolution. Things are going to unfold by my will, by my way, by my dominance, by my victory, and the force of that is so great that it often creates pretty dramatic conflict. I can't back down, I have to win. Something in me refuses to lose or to submit, and that might be a good thing. That's the impulse to stand your ground as well, the impulse to be courageous and resistant of oppression.
I am reminded of the fact that everything that was happening here in Minneapolis over the winter happened with Mars and Pluto getting together in Aquarius; that was a conjunction. The awakening of buried anger, conflict, and again survival energy: Mars Pluto constantly translates into the urge to survive and thrive and persist and overcome something that feels like it's trying to harm you or kill you or put you out or down, and it can be very acute.
Also anything that's been buried, Pluto will try to reveal, so if it's something repressed or hidden or denied or festering, Mars is the one that says open up the fridge, there's a bunch of expired shit in there, it smells bad. You need to clean the whole thing out, and you need to do it now, and you're gonna be doing it half angry, half proud of yourself, you know that feeling. We've all been there; it's a closet, a room in your house, or whatever.
There's a lot of weird shit in there, though. You know, because it's been something that's been neglected, repressed, avoided. Now it has to be confronted. But with that confrontational force and that exposure, we got to smell weird shit in there. Oh my gosh, things like that have gotten much better for me since I've been married; when I was a bachelor living in New York City, questionable. Anyway, the other thing that can come up is buried emotions that aren't socially acceptable: anger, grief, resentment, pride, competitiveness, jealousy, your libido.
And this can just release it, and sometimes it releases it in ways that are not cool. There is a reason that we try to keep some of those instincts down. You're not meant to go walking around just unleashing anger on anyone and everything; that would be very destructive, and that's why we have laws. That's why every society that I can think of on planet earth that I've studied or learned about that has caught my attention or interest, my fascination historically, have typically had ethics guiding behavior, because you can't just let your instincts run rampant.
But you have a lot harder time letting them run or keeping them in, you know, if a transit like this comes up and you don't have good self-control. On the other hand, this exact same combination can be about allowing repressed things, taboo things to come out, and sometimes they come out, they kind of overcompensate, and they come out very forcefully because they've been pressed down, so their initial release may not be so constructive, but that doesn't mean that where they're coming from or the release itself is bad.
You know, it's like when someone that I'm reminded of family dynamics, you know, there's a little bit of people, or maybe they're having a glass of wine or whatever, and there's someone who never speaks up, you know, they're always just very passive. They have that second glass of wine, you know, probably most of the time it's a mistake, and then before you know it, they just hurl their wine glass and give an impassioned speech, and everyone's like, "Where did that come from?" You know where it came from, come on.
So here's the other thing, though: this combination, Mars and Pluto, can be about an almost extreme level of focus and endurance, and Mars Pluto people in general will often have a capacity for complete obsessive focus and commitment to things that they become possessed by. I mean, it really is remarkable. I have Neptune or I have Mars trine my natal Pluto, and I'm like that. I'm just completely whatever. If it's astrology, if it's working out, if it's Bhakti yoga, whatever I've gotten into, it's been 150%, Jesus stressed, I stress myself out.
Just relax, you know, but that is actually something I do love about myself. It's actually one of my favorite parts of my human experience in this lifetime: the deep level of commitment and absorption that has always been really easy for me. Not easy in terms of learning and growing and working through things, but easy in terms of staying really interested in things that I like. I know a lot of people who switch a lot or have trouble figuring out what they like or sticking with things, so this is great energy for that focus and endurance.
I'm not going to die. I'm going to stay with this. It's relentless and resilient, and also when it comes to transformation, I have to transform. I must transform. I'm going to do it. I have noticed in the lives of my children numerous times when Mars and Pluto are configured that they do something big. The first time my daughter jumped into the pool, she goes to swim lessons, and she jumped into the deep end, which is something they get an option to do. They have to, and then they do a little swim, and there are teachers there and everything.
Well, the first time she actually did this, Mars Pluto combination is just getting up that courage and being like, you're kind of just screaming as you hurl yourself into the abyss of something you're scared to do; you just fucking do it. So yeah, but the other thing is the obsessiveness. So I'm being tested, I'm being forged, I'm being tempered through pressure and commitment and stick-to-itiveness. Great. However, obsession, when it comes to winning at all costs, dominating at all costs, things that you're possessed by that aren't good or healthy for you, very problematic with this placement.
This is where we get sort of egomaniacs from, or people who are obsessive to the extent that they'll become fanatical and violent. Even so, there's something about this particular combination that tends to result in people abusing power, abusing authority, becoming compulsive and obsessed with something to the point that they think they're entitled to be fanatical and violent toward others. So now the other thing that comes up, though, is that Mars is also very libidinal, and so is Pluto.
So appetite, pursuit, the hunt, compulsion, fixation on things that we want: that's sex, that's ambition. It can be things as gross as revenge or cruelty. You know, I'm going to completely step on your face because I don't like you. Competition, control, severe attachment to outcomes, meaning very Machiavellian, and so there can be this all-consuming quality, which can make for, if it's safe, well channeled, well boundaried, caring, some great sex, you know what I mean.
Or it can make for a very channeled and properly outletted form of ambition, like I am going to do this and nothing is going to stop me, and I'm going to find a constructive, good way of doing it. So watch for what your desires are and what your impulses are around this that you can channel constructively, because it's a great moment, a good wave to catch, you know what I mean. The other one that comes to my mind is Mars Pluto can be very destructive, and it can be very sudden and fast.
Mars is speed, Pluto is destruction and regeneration, and so Mars will break through obstacles. Pluto will dismantle structures that aren't viable any longer, but together, when they come together, they will break through obstacles and dismantle structures simultaneously, meaning that there's a real destructive potential. Now, that destructive potential may be serving a very positive function, but when a marriage just crashes, or when someone hits rock bottom and has to go to recovery, or when a conflict occurs that just completely ruins a friendship, or you go off at your boss and your job is over.
Okay, well, ultimately you may have needed to move on from something, but wow, can it be violent and aggressive in how it suddenly creates change. Now, there's often renewal behind it, which means that what we confront, the power struggle we go through, the desire we pursue, the way by which we pursue it, all can have elements of destruction, but they're often preludes to great periods of renewal and fertility and creativity. Now, the other thing is that you will often just feel like you're in a pressure cooker.
There's more vigilance, more urgency, more emotional pressure. Everything matters more right now than it usually does. Why? Because time is very fluid, and the quality of time is more important than the quantity of time. There's this a Kairos or Kairos and Kronos. Have you ever heard that distinction? I can't remember exactly how you pronounce the Kairos one. I believe maybe it's Kyros. Anyway, the point is that the one is the felt quality of time, which is what we're studying here with astrology.
So, you know, as much as we want to tell people, and I'm a meditator, I provide daily meditation for all of you folks out there. If you ever care to attend, we're just a whole group of us crazy people, but it's not enough to tell someone, "Oh, just meditate, and then you'll never experience a sense of urgency or heightened vigilance or intensified pressure or emotional pressure." No, what you'll do if you meditate regularly, if you study astrology regularly, is you will recognize the time as such.
Oh, it's a Mars-Pluto time, and you will live within that wave, that wave of experience, but you will do so with a heightened sense of exactly the archetypal dynamic that you're in, which gives you a little breathing room, it gives you more relational sensitivity and participatory value. That's everything to us in a moment like this, which is why I decided to go in this direction today and just sort of let it all out. I wanted today to feel like the combination as much as I could, just get a little unhinged.
You know, when it's like a tectonic pressure, and it forces conflict and action upward from places that it has been caught or building. Now Monday, when we get together, we're going to do horoscopes, so we'll start the week with the day of the square, reflecting a little bit more on Mars Pluto, but doing some horoscopes between the Taurus and Aquarius houses. So that's what I've got for today. I hope this was useful and interesting, as always.
Remember, my new book is out, check it out. I think you'll really, if you like this channel, I can almost guarantee that you'll enjoy the adventure of this book. It's on the website under My Shop, click on My Books. Otherwise, I'm going to sign off now and tell you more about the year one program that's upcoming. It'd be great to study with some of you. We have got fantastic Uranus Pluto trines all throughout this year of study. It's a really good signature to study astrology under. Anyway, that's it for today. Have a good one. Bye.
