What happens when the planet of communication slows to a crawl through the tender waters of Cancer? Mercury retrograde is not here to disrupt—it is here to revise, to revisit, to ask you to feel your way forward rather than think your way through. This is the astrology of emotional reckoning, of ancestral memory rising to the surface, of old conversations begging for a new kind of listening.
In this video, Adam Elenbaas walks you through the entire month-long retrograde, offering horoscopes for all 12 signs. He explores how this Cancer retrograde reshapes your relationship to home, family, vocation, creativity, and the stories you tell about who you are. Each sign receives a nuanced reflection on what is asking to be reworked, reconsidered, or released.
Whether you are revisiting old wounds or reimagining your future, this retrograde invites you to slow down and listen more deeply—to the past, to your lineage, to the quiet voice of your own soul.

Hey everyone. This is Adam Elenbaas from Nightlight Astrology [https://nightlightastrology.com/].
Today we're going to do Mercury retrograde horoscopes. Mercury just turned retrograde this week in Cancer. We will outline the timing of this long retrograde period, share some highlights of the retrograde experience, and then we're going to take it through all 12 whole sign horoscopes, giving you some ideas about what insights, lessons, or changes you might be experiencing based on the location of this retrograde in your natal chart. That's our agenda for today.
Before we get into it, as always, remember to like and subscribe, share your comments, share your reflections, your stories. It takes two seconds to subscribe. It's free to do so, really helps us grow and sustain what we do. You can find transcripts of any of these daily talks on the website, that's nightlightastrology.com. I'm going to talk a little bit about the book and the journey, but then we're going to talk about the role of storytelling in astrology and spiritual practice. I'm going to talk about some basic principles of personal storytelling and memoir writing. So, if you're into creative writing, you're an astrologer who wants to learn more about storytelling, I think this will be a fun evening. Also, just a time to celebrate the release of the book with all of you, my wonderful community. So, check that out.

That's free, something that we offer to try to make sure we're giving back to the community. The other thing I guess I forgot to mention, our monthly webinars got a really good talk cooked up for July's webinar, The Dark Side of Astrology: Malefics, Eclipses, and Retrogrades. That's July 23. You can register under the webinars tab or the events page. You get the recording if you can't attend live.
All right, well, that's it for promotions for the day. Let's put a Chipsco up on the screens, my official astrology. We're an affiliate of Chipsco, so this is an awesome astrology software program. You can check it out and use the 20% off affiliate code that we have in the comment section or the description of the video to save if you want to use Chipsco yourself. Guys will be coming back this summer later on to talk more about newest updates and things that they're doing, it's astrology software being led by astrologers, which is very important to me at a time where our field is starting to be infiltrated by money and capital from people who care nothing about astrology.
So, anyway, let's go ahead and take a look at this retrograde. Now, today, Thursday, July 2, we are on the precipice of looking at a Mars Uranus transit, but it feels like a good day to be thinking about, really, to be thinking about the Mercury retrograde this week, because Mercury's retrograde rules that Mars-Uranus conjunction, and I promise we would do some Mercury retrograde horoscopes. Now we're also going, we're going to be talking about Mars and Uranus again tomorrow. And then on Sunday, I've got a special bonus episode cooked up for you guys with our emotion wolf.
We're going to talk about some of the evolutionary principles of Jupiter, Pluto that are coming through later in July. Next week, we'll circle back around to do some Jupiter in Leo horoscopes, there's so much action packed in right now, so just trying to find space for things anyway. So, let's talk about Mercury's retrograde, so you can see if I back this up just a little bit. The station took place Monday, June 29 retrograding between the 29th and 30th. The retrograde begins at 26th Cancer, so late June.
Now, if we take this retrograde forward, we're going to see that Mercury's retrograde brings it into Cazimi with the sun, that's the real reset of the synodic cycle, and that happens right about at the time of the new moon in Cancer, that Cazimi is July 12 into the 13th, and then bring it forward another day, the 14th, and we have a new moon. So, Mercury's Cazimi, the reset of the synodic cycle that occurs every time Mercury and the sun can join through retrograde or direct motion, it's sort of a reset in the midst of the cycle.
That reset happens right around the time of the new moon, in the middle of July, Mercury will then continue its retrograde through the sign of Cancer, and it reaches its station on Friday, July 24 turning direct between Friday and Saturday, July 25. So that's basically a full month. If you take late June, which we're starting at now, the retrograde starts late June and all the way till about late July, so we have a full month of Mercury retrograde lessons in the sign of Cancer.
Maybe most importantly, at the outset of this cycle, we're getting into this Mars Uranus conjunction ruled by the Mercury retrograde, that although we're going to be looking at the Mars Uranus dynamic separately tomorrow, this retrograde is one that will be intimately tied to the kind of erratic, high, somewhat volatile, but also very creative combination of Mars and Uranus in Gemini. So, what I want to do today, first of all, let's take up the display, let's get rid of everything here except for Mercury, and then we're going to also take out the notes of the moon.
We're just going to focus on the position of Mercury retrograde, and what I'm going to do here is we're going to go through all 12 whole signs. We're going to give you some things to watch for. Now these are things to watch for that are rooted in the rising sign horoscope, but you could listen to this for your sun or your moon, or whatever you want. Just know that when you listen to horoscopes, you use whole signs for everything, which means an Aries horoscope is always just a horoscope with Aries whole sign on the ascendant, and then you read the transits relative to that house location.
The only way this actually coincides with your birth chart is if you're using a whole sign version of your birth chart. Then your rising sign in whole sign is identical to your horoscope, which is why I always recommend your rising sign horoscopes. But anyway, so I'm going to give you a few ideas for each sign, we're going to go through each of them, and we'll just kind of consider what might be some of the lessons or themes or takeaways, remembering that retrogrades often bring revisions, re-evaluations, a slight turn of course, a slight delay, a change of plans, a reversal of direction, metaphorically speaking, that can mean a lot of different things.
So, with that in mind, let's look at all 12 signs today, and hopefully this will give you some good things to work with over the course, not just of this week, as Mercury's retrograde begins, but over the next month. First of all, if you are an Aries rising, we are, excuse me, as an Aries rising, you have Mercury retrograding in your fourth house, we're talking about family and ancestry, household living environment, and there may be household, domestic, or family matters, or affairs that need some kind of review that need careful attention to detail or careful attention to how people are feeling.
The overlay between careful, thoughtful, emotionally considerate reflectiveness and the topics of home, family, family constellations, family patterns, living environment will probably have a pretty strong relationship to one another. It's also possible that old memories or things being re, you know, you're revisiting things from the past, unresolved conflicts or old unprocessed feelings, traumas, family conversations, family history is being relived, relitigated, or maybe let go of, or even healed.
I would think that something very literal around things like your living arrangements, or things involving property, or the evaluation of your property, or bills, or appliances, or furniture could be moved around. And then deeper questions about how do I feel. Do I feel like I'm at home in the world? Do I feel safe? Do I feel like I have groundedness emotionally, physically, domestically? This is also, I think, a really valuable time for going inward and reflecting on how you feel.
Aries can be very outward, very action-oriented. This might be a valuable time to go inward and reflect on your interior emotional space, a more private part of yourself, but also just valuable for connecting with anything around roots, lineage, family, foundations, home, property in general. So watch for those things if you're an Aries Rising. Let's move along to Taurus next. For Taurus rising, this Mercury retrograde is taking place in the third house.
As a Taurus rising myself, I can't help but reflect on the fact that I will be re-recording a - I recorded an audio version of my book when it was in rough draft stage, and I was releasing a chapter at a time in rough draft, but I'm now re-recording it, and audio mastering it for Audible. There'll be an Audible books version of The Oracle Speaks coming out. I'll be re-recording it while Mercury's retrograde, isn't that funny, but I say that because one of the things that can come up with Mercury retrograde in the third is any kind of revision or revisiting of things that have been written or communicated.
Things that you're learning, or skills that you're developing, any kind of review of communication habits or skills, or writing projects, or the use of technology in your life. Also, anything regarding siblings or relatives or neighbors, the local or kind of more immediate environment around you may require your attention, or may ask you to revise or reconsider something. Something from the past might be coming up with respect to things like siblings and family matters that are constellated around the roots that you share with other people, so things involving your hometown, or things involving people that you grew up with, or that are like siblings, or you know, like family to you.
There can also be some changes with respect to things like travel, or travel plans. There can be delays when it comes to traveling, or any kind of transit, or travel in your local environment. This is the kind of transit that comes up when your car is in the shop, or when you have to take an alternate route, because the subway line you take is down. But there may be some interesting things that you pick up or learn along the way by virtue of having to take another path that's not the usual path that you take.
There's also something here about learning communication and emotional intelligence. This is a time to revise or reconsider the way you do something because of updated or upgraded emotional intelligence or maturity, and also going back to revisit things that need greater emotional care, or love or nurturance that maybe didn't get it, but require it now. Go back, smooth things over, think about things, care for things. I love this. Also, revisiting old subjects or hobbies or interests from the past, kind of almost a little nostalgic. So we'll watch for that if you're Taurus rising.
For Gemini rising, Mercury retrograde is taking place in your second house. Now that's a place that's typically associated with income and expenditures, assets and resources, but I like to call it the house of time, money, energy, and resources. There's a reassessment, perhaps, of your finances, or what you own or possess, or what you spend, or where you receive your livelihood, or how much you receive. If you own your own business, this might be a revision of what products you have, or what sales points you make, or how your website features what you do, anything that represents a reallocation of assets or time or energy could come up while Mercury's retrograde in your second house.
I would also wonder about evaluating where what feels the best, like the best use of time. Mercury in Cancer, in particular, doesn't just want to make money or have things or earn, but it wants to do so in the way that feels right, and so some assessment of mental, emotional qualities around time, money, energy, and resources may also be really important right now. You want to be reviewing your relationship with what you have, what you possess, and what it means to you, and what you steward, or what you're responsible for, what assets or resources you're charged with maintaining or upkeeping, and how are you doing that, and what's worth it, maybe, and what isn't worth it, in terms of the time spent keeping up with something.
Any kinds of questions about material security could come up right now, and maybe some overlap between things like family karma, emotional safety, emotional regulation, taking care of your body, your health, your mind, your nervous system in relation to things that you possess or own, or income and expenditures as they relate to mental and emotional health, so these are the things that come up for me. There could also be some interesting conversations again between family karma and things like money or finances in general.
If we go to Cancer rising, then Mercury's retrograde is taking place in the first whole sign house, that's your rising sign, which means it's the place of your personal identity. If you're a Cancer rising, then it's a time to maybe re-evaluate personal goals, personal identity, the direction of your life in accordance with your understanding of who you are. And as we understand ourselves, we usually clarify what matters to us, and what doesn't matter to us, and that can be so, a lot of self-understanding can lead to very practical changes that we make in our life.
There might be old versions of yourself that are resurfacing, or old conversations, or old family business, unfinished family business that is really at the forefront of what you're thinking about right now, or what's on your mind, there might be a really nostalgic period of having to look back at where you've been and your past and where you come from and your roots as a way of clarifying something or moving forward with something. Sometimes we get stuck and we need a period of introspection or reflection upon the past, reflection upon our ancestry, we might need to make a pilgrimage or take a pilgrimage internally into the past.
There may also be some period of needing to revise or rethink how you communicate, or how you educate, or how you parent, or how you care for things, and how you care for yourself. Always, Mercury retrograde in the first house provides an opportunity to rethink how we appear to other people, how we speak and interact. Our conscious sense of personality and personality changes, appearance changes, physical health changes, revisions, and reflection upon those materials are all natural for Mercury retrograde. In the first, it's also a time where things that you're trying to get started on may, you may need to pause a moment and come back to them later.
All right. Well, we go on to Leo rising, and we have Mercury retrograde in your 12th house. This is a place where a lot of unconscious material can come up, hidden things, unfinished things, unresolved anxieties that emerge from the background, maybe things from the deep ancestral past with Mercury in the sign of Cancer. I would think that there's a really useful time for taking some solitude or some retreat, some time for reflection, some quiet downtime to reflect on what needs releasing, completing, surrendering.
If you are spending time with family this summer, there's going to be a lot of insight around those interactions, and the need to rethink or revise or revisit things from the past may be prompted by uncomfortable encounters with your family, that's like, you know, it's like Ram Das said, if you think you're enlightened, spend a week with your family. Leos, you might be spending a week with your family, metaphorically or mentally, psychically, emotionally, in your dreams, it may be a little uncomfortable, but there's something there for you.
I would also say that revising or renewing spiritual practices, anything that allows you to relinquish control, relinquish the ego, dive into a more vulnerable, soft, sweet personal space. Leos have a lot of sunshine and solar light that guides your conscious sense of direction and identity. The cancer space is subtler, sweeter, more vulnerable, and will require you to sort of get out of your own sunlight in order to tap into something a little deeper. It's like deep, deep, dark water with Cancer in the 12th that has a really nourishing quality to it, if you're willing to kind of seek that time out or time away from the sunlight world.
Going into the lunar world is a bit darker in the 12th house, but filled with things that want to take care of you and help you and aid you in life. So, consider all that right now for Leos. Alrighty, let's move to Virgo rising. For Virgo rising, we're looking at the 11th house Mercury retrograde, and we're thinking about the different kinds of commitments that you have to people, friends, groups, communities, allies, patrons. Reviewing or revising these connections and commitments is probably a good idea when Mercury retrograde goes, or you might be doing it whether you want to or not, but actively doing it, and just carefully thinking about what ties feel most nurturing and supportive.
Where do I feel most at home with other people? Where am I being asked to adjust or reconsider my sense of belonging? What kind of feedback am I getting from groups and communities that I belong to, and how is my place or role changing in them? There might be old connections that reappear, or change of status or position, change of different kinds of emotional bonds or affiliations. So, a lot of refining, revising, reconsidering social connections, but also our 11th house is a place of aspirations, dreams, and visions for the future.
It's a place where we think what kinds of ambitions, dreams, and the fulfillment of those dreams or ambitions really make me happy, and it's out in the world. It's not private interior things as much as it is social, public, professional, and collectively shared or realized, so revising or reviewing what social happiness and belonging, and what kinds of ambitions and aspirations you have right now, and what they provide your life with is also really important. All right, we're going on to Libras now.
For Libra, we've got your Mercury retrograde in Cancer in the 10th house. This is a place of professional public responsibility, leadership, often the house of vocation and profession, right? So we're thinking about changes that are taking place to what work looks like, or how work is done, or who you work with, or who's in charge, or what active projects you're working on, or the direction of your career overall might be changing. There could also be communication dynamics in the workplace that are really important, who you report to, how things are done, and clarifying things.
The emotional level of communication in the workplace is important. A sense of belonging is important. It might be a good period to be thinking about how to have healthier and more supportive relationships at work. Could also be that there's some change in style or voicing or esthetic that has to do with new ideas or new approaches that you're implementing, so any kind of organizational shift or a shift of strategy or focus or design that could be taking place right now as well. Could also be some way in which you're having to go back and redo something, or some delay in a project, or some reworking of something that you've thought was over, but has to be reworked somehow, that could also take place. So, a few things there in the career house for Libras.
Let's go on to Scorpios. If you're a Scorpio, we've got this Mercury retrograde in your ninth house, so we're going to be looking at things like teaching, religion, philosophy, spiritual and philosophical commitments, and they're changing shape right now. There is some reconsideration. This is also like if you had an exam you didn't quite make, you have to go back and study to take it again, or it could be that there are reworkings of beliefs or ideas, something from the past is coming back spiritually, religiously, philosophically.
You might be considering your beliefs in light of where you came from, your ancestry, your family, your family of origin, your upbringing in relation to things like, what do I believe, what's my relationship with religion or philosophy, you want to be reflecting during this period actively on how your beliefs guide your sense of life purpose and direction. What do you know, and what are you learning? What do you know, meaning what is the wisdom that you've actually lived and that you embody.
I would say at this point, for example, for me, a lot of it has to do with the values that I hold around spirituality, spiritual practices, spiritual self-care, astrology, divination, these are things that have become so deeply embodied in my life that I don't even really need ideas behind them anymore. Cancer in the ninth is like that, insofar as it says, you know, whatever wisdom you have, it's always going to be best if it's not just rooted in emotional bias, that's coming from shadow or unconscious material, but that the emotional conviction comes from an embodied knowing from your experience.
So, right now, what are your experiences teaching you? What are they causing you to rethink or reconsider with respect to what you know or believe? So, this could also have some emphasis, or bring some emphasis on things like education, teachers, and teaching, maybe travel abroad, or some kind of pilgrimage. Watch for all of those things, if you're a Scorpio. So, we'll move on to Sagittarius next. Sagittarius rising places Mercury's retrograde in the eighth house.
This is a place of shared resources, but also debts, inheritance, taxes, penalties, obligations that we have to others or others to us. And so, reworking of soul contracts of debts and exchanges of contracts or negotiations, where things are being exchanged or traded, essentially conversations about trust and reciprocity, mutual responsibilities, the give and take, and making sure that each person feels cared for and that the needs are being balanced in the exchanges that are being made. It's also a time to reflect on impermanence, vulnerability, exchange of support between people.
Any kinds of unhealthy emotional dependencies could be peeled off during this retrograde, or beneficial emotional bonds or connections could be deepened or sort of filled out, and blessings or benefits received because of little careful amendments that are being made. So, interesting one there, the karmic accounting books being looked over through Cancer in the eighth, for Sages. For Capricorn, we're looking at the seventh house, a place of love and relationships. So, very obviously, this could be a Mercury retrograde that revises the nature of your relationships, the agreements that you have, the emotional, sexual, intellectual contracts that you have with close, intimate others.
Importance being placed on one to one relationships, typically in the seventh house, former partners, clients, collaborators may appear that you had close relationships with in the past because there's something unfinished or something that's coming back to bless you, but also the potential for miscommunications or a close look at needs and emotional support. This is a perfect, if you're a Capricorn and you're avoidant, this is a perfect transit for you to become less avoidant and more positively bonded on an emotional level with someone else.
If your partner tends to be overly too needy, then, and they're anxiously attached, maybe this is time to have some serious conversations about secure attachment style, you get the point. Attachment styles and bonding patterns could be looked at either way with Mercury retrograde here in your seventh. I would also say that just generally speaking, the balance of emotional give and take, emotional support and openness is going to be explored with this kind of retrograde.
So consider those things in the realm of relationships, and also just anything mercurial that could be reaching a point of transformation. The seventh house is the place of the setting sun, and so anything mercurial could be coming to some point of resolution, completion, or closure. Anything that Mercury naturally represents, which could be things like contracts, money, sometimes even like vehicles or technology. The place of the setting sun sometimes means a cycle is just coming to an end, that can be like a subtle meaning of the seventh house.
All right. Well, Aquarius rising, we take Mercury's retrograde and place it into the sixth house. Now we like to talk about this house as a place of daily work and routines and service, and all of that. It's better understood as a house where every day there is work effort and hardship required, because life is just hard. Life requires sacrifice. You have to chop wood and carry water, you have to survive, you have to make money. Every day will involve upkeep and things that are like maintenance and sort of routine, but they're absolutely essential part of making sure that life lives.
It's a sacrificial house, it's a work house, it's a house that supports and sustains everything we do, but isn't like the fun, sexy kind of stuff that we do. However, it's a gritty house, it's a determined house, and it's a house that benefits us a lot when we stick to doing hard things and making meaningful sacrifices to things we believe in, and so forth, and being a service, genuinely. So, for Aquarians, right now, a review of how you work, of how you spend your time, money, energy, and resources, in terms of whether it is contributing toward things you care about, if you're putting sacrificial ghee into the fire, or if it feels like a waste of time or energy.
Reassessing how you care for yourself, how you take care of daily work, and how good you feel about the work you're doing, so considering generally how things like discipline and effort and sacrifice and service are contributing overall to well-being, a sense of connectedness, a sense of feeling connected emotionally to what you're doing and to other people. If the work doesn't feel emotionally valuable, then this retrograde will maybe create some meaningful changes. This is also a time where there can just be some things returning from the past that are difficult that you have to endure or face around family karma.
All right, let's go to Pisces. Last but not least, Pisces rising, Mercury's retrograde is in the fifth house, a place of creativity and the arts. Your creative dharma is here. We're all meant to creatively participate in the act of the universe, the actions of the animal body of the cosmos. We are a part of it, our creative dharma, that part in which we find our voice in the choir of creation, the retrograde here suggests that you're revisiting, revising, reflecting upon your creative essence.
It's a good time to be thinking about what is my voice, and what is my creative joy, what fills me up, what fills my cup, and what can I share with the world that generously gives, lovingly gives, and supports, nurtures, and nourishes creation? But we have to find that sometimes, or we have to recalibrate or revisit that question from time to time, because certain modes of creativity become outdated, or they become dead or dry. So we want to, if the well is dry, then we want to figure out how to locate that nourishing water inside of it again, or how do we get the well working again?
There's a hexagram in the I Ching called 48 the well, this is like that. What brings you genuine delight, inspiration, fulfillment of the heart, where can you act creatively and in a way that really feels like you're helping nurture the world and yourself simultaneously? I would also say anything involving children, mentorship, or education of children may come up for attention or review somehow, but it is a transit that speaks to creative renewal at its heart.
This is also a time where, like, some people are going to get pregnant again, you know, it's like a revisit second pregnancy, or some people are going to be getting pregnant after trying, or a little delay in getting pregnant in between tries, or something like that, so think about some of the topics that are going to be associated for some people with pregnancy. Okay, well, we've done it. We've gotten through horoscopes. I didn't die. Hopefully, you had a good time.
But look, it's really my hope that this channel will be a place that just blesses you, that whatever you receive here, just let it be something good, let it be something that touches your heart, that inspires your mind, that gives you a soulful feeling. Yes, I'm in an enchanted cosmos. Life is meaningful. Life can be hard, but I'm not alone in it. Any of these kinds of blessings, that if they come with the content regularly, then mission accomplished. That's what it's all about.
All right. Well, that's what I've got for today. We're going to take a look at that Mars-Uranus conjunction tomorrow. Buckle, buckle your seat belts for that one, but hopefully these gave you some good things to work with, because that Mars-Uranus conjunction is hosted by the Mercury retrograde dynamic that we just explored. So, that's it for now. We'll see you again tomorrow. Bye, everyone.
