Hey everyone. This is Adam Elenbaas from Nightlight Astrology [https://nightlightastrology.com/].
Today we're going to take a look at Mercury squaring Mars and the Sun conjoining Uranus back to back. Over the weekend, these two transits are coming through Saturday and Sunday, so we're going to map them out in terms of the timeline, and then I'm going to give you five things to watch for given the combination of these two transits happening basically at the same time. So that will be our goal for today.
Tomorrow, we'll do horoscopes on the Sun-Uranus conjunction for all 12 signs, reminding you of which house topics are being activated through the sun's conjunction with Uranus, which is a pretty significant transit. So anyway, that's our agenda for today.
Before we get into it, remember to like and subscribe. We have done some research and found that a lot of people watch the channel regularly but are not yet subscribed, and that simple action helps us grow tremendously. So we really do appreciate it.
Also, we want this to be a home for your daily spiritual practice. If astrology is a part of your spiritual lifestyle, then we hope that you'll consider this a home for that spiritual practice. You can find transcripts of any of these daily talks on the website, which is NightlightAstrology.com.
When you go over there tonight, I am hosting a webinar on the ancient Hellenistic meaning of Jupiter in Cancer. We're going to be exploring the dignity category of Jupiter's exaltation and really taking a deep dive into the meaning of this placement. This will be great for people who study astrology or who just want to know more about this upcoming transit.
You'll find it under the Events page—go to Live Talks on the website. You'll see the registration link there for the webinar. You'll get the link to attend live. If you cannot make it live, you can get the recording downloaded, audio or video, to watch on your own time.
The other thing that's happening right now, as you know if you listen to the channel regularly, is we are in enrollment season for my Year One course, Ancient Astrology for the Modern Mystic. This is our first-year program in ancient Hellenistic astrology.
Everything we teach infuses modern depth psychology and archetypal astrology into the way we approach astrology at Nightlight. So that's always there. But this is a class in ancient Hellenistic astrology. You're going to learn all of the ancient, esoteric, philosophical roots of the craft, which, for most people, is super beneficial. It grants such coherence and structure and groundedness to the way that you practice astrology.
At the end of today's video, there's an informational piece that I've made on the course so that you can learn more about everything the course includes. That's a really thorough video that will explain—if you have any questions, you'll likely have them answered during that little segment of today's talk.
Again, it comes at the end, at the bottom. You'll find the early bird payment plans. Those are available through tomorrow, so you just have one more day left to save and take advantage of those early bird rates. You also have the need-based tuition option.
This allows you to pick a price within a sliding scale that works for you if you are hurting or in need of a little help because you're on a fixed or limited income. We know some people are international, and the—what do you call it? The monetary fees, or the—what am I thinking of? What's the word I'm looking for? The currency rates are different.
And so if you need to take advantage of it because the currency rate is astronomically high for your country, that's fine too. We try to make sure that our programs are accessible, and we trust people to use it only if they need it. So if you do need a little help, check that out. It's there to make sure that astrology is accessible for people of all different socioeconomic backgrounds.
And on that note, again, at the end of today's talk, you'll see an informational video. I probably answer any question you could possibly have about the course there. Year Two in horary also starts in June. Horary is something that just about anyone could dive into if you have a background in traditional astrology.
Year Two—we make everyone take Year One first. So that's probably only applicable for people who are currently enrolled in our programs. Okay, on that note, let us now turn our attention to the real-time clock, and we're going to take a look at the timeline for these two powerful transits that are coming in—powerful especially because they're happening so close together. So let us consider that here.
All right, here you can see the real-time clock for today, Thursday, May 15. You will notice that today, Mercury is moving into the ninth degree of Taurus, where it will then be within the three-degree engagement range with Mars. So that three-degree engagement range means that the two planets are coming together to deliver a testimony.
The aspect dynamic was looked at as testimony in the cosmic courtroom. So Mercury in the superior position is sort of impressing something upon Mars in Leo right now that ought to be really interesting. We're going to talk about that dynamic today.
Now, that dynamic is going to perfect over the weekend. We're going to see—let me just take you to the approximate time that occurs. Yes. So here we are, and we're looking at the two of them crossing paths pretty late Saturday night. This is around—they're perfecting their square at 13 Taurus and 13 Leo around 11:50 PM Central Time.
So you're getting it a few hours earlier if you're on the West Coast, early morning Sunday if you're on the East Coast in the United States. But that square is perfecting at basically the exact same time that the sun is also conjoining Uranus.
So if we look back a little earlier in the evening, you're going to see that the sun conjoins Uranus at 27 degrees. This is my time, about 6 PM Central Time. So it's that about 4 PM Pacific and maybe 7 PM Eastern. So Saturday evening becomes a kind of a wild ride.
We have, you know, Sun conjoining Uranus Saturday evening for most people, at least in the US, and then on the 18th, early morning, depending on which time zone you're in, or late, late evening on the 17th, Mercury will square Mars. So the proximity of these two events is such that we should really look at them together, especially because Mercury is in Taurus, along with the sun and Uranus.
I'm going to give you five things to watch for based on the archetypal combination of these planets. But before we do that, I want to say a few things about each of them individually, just to remind us. Most of you listening probably know enough about the symbols of astrology to know a little bit about Mercury and Mars and a little bit about the Sun-Uranus.
Let's start with the Sun-Uranus because it really is the heart of what's happening this weekend. The sun's conjunction with Uranus is a pretty brief transit, and it happens every year. In the solar year, the sun goes through the whole zodiac. At some point, it will conjoin Uranus, but it's kind of a once-a-year type of event in terms of how regularly it occurs.
Uranus will move along a little bit, so it's a year and change, but you get what I'm saying. The Sun's conjunction to Uranus may only last for a few days, but the combination of these two planets is really powerful. I think that the sun and Uranus work together much more—there's a synergy between the two of them that's usually felt as pretty constructive.
Like, we would all describe—think a lot of us would describe contacts between the sun and Uranus, whether it's transiting Uranus to your natal sun, or we're talking about, you know, a five-day window where the sun and Uranus are conjoining on a mundane level in our birth chart somewhere—it's always going to pop with an angular house in your chart.
But we would describe it as synergistic, as compared to, say, like the Sun-Pluto, right? Or Sun-Saturn, even Sun-Neptune, to a certain extent, tend to be a little bit more problematic. The reason that this is so—that it works together so nicely—is because there's a few things the planets share in common.
The sun was related to everything that is eternal, transcendental, archetypal, ideal, perfect—like a triangle is somehow exists in the perfect realm of the, you know, the mind of the universe. You guys have heard me talk about this many times before with the sun.
So the sun holds up images of beauty, perfection, truth. Not surprisingly, the sun rejoiced in the ninth house, the place where we pursue higher truth, the place where we learn the archetypes. The ninth house is the place of astrology. And so the sun does really well when it comes to things that are ideal and that illuminate us from within.
The sun as the light of illumination—what is that illumination? Well, in the most basic sense, it is the understanding that we are eternal beings, the illumination of our spirit-soul from within, of our higher self, some people call it. Now, pair that with Uranus. What do they have in common?
Well, Uranus has this very Promethean energy to it. And when we think of Prometheus, we think about, you know, the fella who stole the fire from the gods, right? So what is the fire from the gods? That is the archetypal. That is the that which is illumined, higher, perfect, ideal. It's filled with truth, knowledge, wisdom, beauty.
And so the stealing of that fire is embodied in the rebellious nature of Uranus to progress and innovate and break free of boundaries in this world. What is the main boundary? Our mortality. So Uranus is a planet, in a way, like Prometheus, that steals the fire from the gods and the hope that the humans, having the knowledge of the higher thoughts and minds of the unit mind of the universe, can live forever.
You know, that's the hubris potentially. But on the other side, it's about the desire that we have to know and understand the mind of God and to locate that gnosis in our own being. And that impulse with Uranus matches very well with the sun, who is such a key player when it comes to understanding the spiritual purpose and direction of our lives.
So when the two come together, there's this sense of emancipatory, kind of divine rebelliousness. I want to even on a very sort of little microcosmic level, in little areas of our life—some people will have this transit louder than others, you know, right now—but it's about, how do I progress? How do I move forward? How do I evolve? How do I break out of stagnant patterns or habits or places where I'm stuck or maybe a little covered or ignorant, or, you know, I'm sort of like half-conscious?
And the impulse to become more conscious, to break out of structures that are not serving my progress or enlightenment, can be really profound when these two planets come together. So I love this transit as a kind of like a deliverer of heat, light, progress, breakthrough, innovation, creativity, inspiration—I see where I need to go, even if there's things I still have to do. I can clearly see what progress looks like.
So never underestimate the Sun-Uranus. And again, when I see people in my natal practice over the years having Uranus transits to the sun in their birth chart, those periods are often times accompanied by a complete redirection of life purpose or of interest or of passion or of motivation, and needing to be freer somehow or break through creatively is usually a hallmark of that transit.
Not surprisingly, we will see a little miniature version of that in our lives with this quick-moving transit. Of course, if you have it configured—like it's happening on my ascendant with, you know, within a degree or two—when it's configured in certain ways, you may notice that it's a little louder when it's hitting planets in your chart and so forth.
If you're a fixed rising sign—we're going to do horoscopes tomorrow—but the fixed rising signs at the beginning of the week, we mentioned the angular houses that they're falling in—a little bit louder in those houses, typically. So anyway, when we think about Mercury and Mars, on the other hand, their dynamism through squares, conjunctions, oppositions, even trines and sextiles can bring out some really positive significations.
The two planets both had an affiliation with things like competition and sports and athletics and victory. I know it seems weird with Mercury, but Mercury is a planet that is associated with the intelligence and wit needed to win on the streets of life. You know, it's like street smarts. There's a way in which you get what you need and you accomplish things because of your intelligence.
And Mercury has this kind of quick-wittedness that is somewhat competitive. And we've ever, you know, playful competitive banter, but not surprisingly, playful competitive sports were also associated with Mercury because of the back-and-forth nature of, say, like, you know, tennis or something like that. Pickleball is all the rage these days, right? So very mercurial.
Now, Mars—also god of sports, athletics, competition, dominance, victory, aggression, hostility, conflict. When you put the two together, though, you will often get this very like witty, smart, incisive, competitive energy that can accomplish things and that will suddenly find motivation or excitement or inspiration.
When you pair that next to the sun and Uranus, it's a pretty dynamic pairing that can represent the kinds of things we're going to look at here in a minute. The other thing to remember about these two planets is that in ancient astrology, both planets, especially when paired together, were often associated with particular skills or abilities that reflect the Mercury-Mars combination.
For example, analytic thinking, science, alchemy, surgery, baking, you know, cooking things—any skill that pairs intelligence alongside of the heat and incisiveness of Mars, like surgery or science or math, that needs incisive, analytical dissecting of concepts and ideas. So the two together can be intellectually very powerful and analytical.
So remembering all of that alongside of what we've just said about the sun and Uranus, now let's take a look at these five things to watch for, all of which reflect the combination of the two happening in such close proximity Saturday evening.
Now, in terms of when you might expect to feel this, I should say something first: today, right? Thursday, everything's within range. By Monday, everything's sort of getting out of range. So I'd say Thursday, you know, to Monday—that would be today is May 15. So spread this out to Monday, May 19. You could even take it to the 20th if you wanted to just get the sun right out of Taurus.
So, you know, May 17 through the 20th, something like that, I think is probably—sorry, today is the 15th. So the 15th through the 20th, the next five days, especially Saturday, though—watch for Saturday.
Okay, so five things to watch for, given this combination. Number one would be decisive plans and sudden actions. When an idea, a thought, a strategy appears powerfully, distinctly, and demands that action be taken, you could bet that, you know, you'd have something like Mercury and Mars and the sun and Uranus all happening at once.
So watch for the quick thinking, the quickly formed idea, strategy, approach, tactic that needs to be implemented with a certain kind of suddenness or decisive, quick, bold. It's got that kind of lightning strike behind it.
Number two would be a surge of provocative, confident, rebellious energy. Now, Mercury-Mars paired together might give a little cockiness or arrogance or a little bit, you know, maybe it's ambitious, but also a little too aggressive. So do be careful of that.
But otherwise, the Uranian revolutionary tendency, along with the creative tendency of sun and Uranus, alongside of the kind of incisive, strong, bold, action-oriented combination of Mercury and Mars, could create a little surge of ambitious, confident, and maybe rebellious or creative energy.
Number three—I think this is most exciting. Mercury was traditionally Hermes. Mercury was associated with inventors and invention. In modern astrology, Uranus also carries some of those significations of inventiveness. And so Mercury, Mars, sun, Uranus, to me, feels like could we be having a breakthrough intellectually, or a breakthrough in our understanding, a light bulb moment, an epiphany, an aha, or a moment of innovation, a sudden surge of creativity that feels like, oh, look, a brand-new idea, a brand-new approach. I've been—I'm in receipt of some divine inspiration here in the form of inventiveness. So watch for that.
You know, it's like Doc from Back to the Future always comes to my mind with like Uranus—like the fried-out hair. Peaceful but decisive change. Look, Mercury is in the superior position in Venus's sign. Venus is also starting to move into a trine with Mars. We'll be exploring that next week. But Venus is also in the superior position over Mars.
So I believe that when something super decisive happens like this with sun-Uranus, but it's in a Venus-ruled sign, Venus is overcoming Mars in a superior trine, Mercury in Venus's sign is overcoming Mars in a superior square. This might be a moment where we really have to think about how to enact a peaceful transition.
The newness, the surge of energy, the change, the shift—very exciting. But how do we do it in a way that is peaceful, amicable, smooth, and concerned or considerate for the welfare of other people or other energy—sensitive to harmonization? So watch for that too, because that's kind of a silver lining here.
Everything is lined up for something very kind of decisive and bold and action-oriented. But there's a lot of Venus at play that could make this a moment of necessary diplomacy or tact. Number five: pride, pleasure, stability, and what we will do for the sake of these things.
Well, look, when we think about Mars in Leo, we think about pride. What do I stand on within myself that gives me a sense of strength, that honors my uniqueness, that really recognizes what is special about me, and the need to assert that—that's a strong part of Mars in Leo.
But we also look for things like pleasure or enjoyment, a level of stability or ease, and pride, pleasure, stability, enjoyment—I feel like all of those qualities are subtly at play between the Taurus and Leo emphasis going on. And so because of that, I wonder right now, what are we doing on behalf of the need to have a healthy ego, to have healthy love, self-love and self-respect, and to assert those things, to emphasize the need we have for pleasure or happiness or enjoyment or peace or comfort or stability—all important qualities for Taurus.
And, you know, being able to say, this is what I like, this is what I value, this is what brings me happiness or pleasure, and these are connected to my self-worth and my importance as a person. That's not easy to do.
A lot of us have been taught that your own needs for pleasure or happiness are only safe in private, by yourself. As soon as they are social, then to say anything about your specific desires or wants or wishes is selfish. You always should be careful of that.
Now, on the one hand, we don't want to be bulldozing people and insisting on our own way. We learned that from the time we're kids, most of us, right? But if we never assert with a peaceful, easy openness the nature of who we are and what we enjoy or what we love or what we like, we'll eventually become resentful within our relationships.
And so there's something maybe at play around all of these—all of these ideas, these tensions, let's say—coming up this weekend. So watch for all of that.
All right, that is what I've got for you today. I hope that this was useful and, as always, gave you good ways of accessing the astrological energy that will support you on your spiritual path. To me, the spiritual purpose of astrology is to live a life that is intentional, reflective, connected, thoughtful, in relation to our experiences.
Our experiences are often grabbing us, right? They're often just things that just happen, and we're in the midst of it as it's happening, and we do our best to live through experience. How helpful is it to have these symbols there, sometimes able to pop up in the midst of the experience and help us reflect, choose, act, be intentional, be conscious—that even if we can't access that in the moment of the living, which is hard, and we certainly don't want to bypass the living either, then it's there for us in hindsight. It's there for us in reflection. What a meaningful way to engage with life, right?
So on that note, if you are interested in studying with us, the new cohort starts on June 22. I can't wait for a new group of students. I teach every class myself. I don't mail it in with pre-recorded content. I like the living presence of teaching conversations, new students, new groups of people, learning.
And for me to continue evolving as a teacher, I have to keep teaching live classes. And so this is coming up—our 30th program over 15 years, two a year. I'm very excited to welcome a new group of students. After I sign off, you can learn more about everything the program includes, and I hope to see you there.
All right. Take it easy, everyone. Bye.
