What happens when a solar eclipse aligns with the South Node of the Moon, and what does it ask of you?
In this video, we explore the deeper meaning of South Node eclipses—not as events that happen to you, but as initiatory moments that happen within you. Drawing from Hellenistic, Indian, and modern perspectives, we examine how these eclipses invite a harvesting of wisdom, a relinquishment of attachments, and a turning inward toward the light that exists before any stage or audience.
This is the astrology of the soul's journey through time, where old karma meets new beginnings, and where the heart is asked to grow through what it fears releasing.

Hey everyone. This is Adam Elenbaas from Nightlight Astrology [https://nightlightastrology.com/].
Today we're going to talk about South Node eclipses and what they mean in particular. The reason we're doing this is, of course, because we have a solar eclipse coming up in the sign of Leo with the South Node of the Moon. So, what kinds of things do South Node eclipses bring in particular? Now we've got a solar eclipse coming up, so we'll cover that in particular today, but also talk about what South Node eclipses mean overall. So I hope that this will be useful for you.
Before we get into it, as always, remember to like and subscribe, share your comments, your reflections. It is really nice to hear from all of you. Give us that thumbs up. Hit the subscribe button because it's free to do so, and it really helps us. You can find transcripts of any of these daily talks on the website. That's nightlightastrology.com. Let's head over there. A couple of brief promotions before we get into our content for the day. If you go to the events page, click on annual retreat. You can also find that under the courses tab.
Our retreat for next year, 2027, is taking place here in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul, just south of them, and that's going to be taking place in August of 2027. The retreat is now open. It is filling up quickly, you guys. So if you want to come along on this kind of like a annual pilgrimage that we're hosting now, this is I think the best event that we've ever hosted at Nightlight. It was really really special this past summer as we did it. I'm really looking forward to next year and getting together with all of you, you don't need to be an advanced astrologer.
This is really about connecting with the spiritual practice of astrology and deepening that spiritual connection. It's highly, it's hands-on, very experiential, and really fun time with group, a group and community. So check out everything you need to know about the retreat is on the page, and the early bird sale is at the bottom, so there's a couple different registration options and payment plans. But that sale ends October 1st. We probably will be full up by then, so make sure that you register.
There's also a documentary video about the retreat that we just took. If you want to see a kind of nice documentary that we had filmed about the retreat we took in June to Mexico. Check that out. Anyway, everything you need to know is there, and I can't wait to see some of you at this retreat next year. A really deep, immersive spiritual experience with astrology. Also, go to the shop page, click on my books. My book, The Oracle Speaks, is out. Audible version is coming out soon. It should be out this month.
Really looking forward to getting that out to all of you, but check it out here. You can get the paperback copy. Leave us a review on Amazon. We really appreciate it. Also, don't forget every day at Nightlight under the events page, click on Community Quiet. Seven days a week meditation. It's free. You can join us. The Zoom link and password is right there. We'd love to see some of you in meditation group. So those are our announcements.
Let's turn our attention to Nichepso. This is our official astrology software program. The affiliate code, if you want that 20% off discount, is in the comments or the link in the description. That gets you 20% off every single month on your subscription, or it doesn't go away, so it's perpetual, and it helps us too as a school. We appreciate it. So anyway, here we are, Thursday, August 6, and what do we have? We have, sorry, here here we go.
So if I advance this day at a time on August 12 next week, it's eclipse season again. We'll have a solar eclipse in Leo, and the thing I want to point out to you is that this solar eclipse will be in proximity to the south node of the moon? That's the upside-down-looking horseshoe. Now, that south node of the moon means that it's a solar eclipse, just like any other solar eclipse, because it's a new moon in proximity to one of the nodes. But what's special about this one is that it's south node flavored, and that's different than a North Node eclipse.
So today I want to talk about what kinds of things you can generally watch for when it comes to eclipses that form around the South Node, in particular. So I've got a list of five things to watch for, and hopefully these will be interesting. Before we get into my list, let's take some time to review the basic significations from the modern evolutionary perspective, ancient Hellenistic perspective, and the ancient Indian perspective.
In modern evolutionary astrology, which you're probably familiar with, the South Node of the Moon basically refers to old karma, old past life patterns that are deeply familiar and already established in the soul and its experience across lifetimes. So what that means is that the south node of the moon eclipses are going to constellate around themes from the past that are reaching a point of resolution, kind of a karmic recycling bin, and sometimes there's a sense of finishing old business karmically. There are old talents and understanding of things from the past that has been gathered and harvested in the soul.
And while this, there might be certain gifts and understanding that come sort of naturally to the soul because of that past life orientation. That the South Node represents, there is also usually a sense that we need to be moving in the direction of the North Node and not getting hung up on the South Node. That's the basic evolutionary perspective. In a nutshell, in my own words, I'm sure you know my EA friends, colleagues could articulate it with more nuance. But there you have it.
In ancient Hellenistic astrology, the south node of the moon is associated specifically with, sometimes associated with Saturn, and with the limits of things in the material world, with diminishment of things materially, or with the general sense of decline that happens in the material world, like autumn and winter, old age like Saturn, diminishment, deterioration, the things that age and expire, and that there's always with the South Node a sense of something diminishing in its material strength or something like that, like its vitality.
There's also a kind of general teaching that the north node is good with a good one and bad with a bad one, and the south node is the opposite. So, for example, the south node will diminish things, both good and bad. What that means is that if you have a malefic with the south node of the moon, a planet say Mars or Saturn, the South Node may actually curb the potential maleficence of that malefic. Whereas if you had a benefic with the South Node of the Moon, the tendency to diminish that the South Node brings would also diminish the power of the benefic.
So the South Node is kind of associated with diminishing things in general, so like if you're trying to get rid of a tumor, you know, and you want it to shrink, the south node is kind of a good thing. The north node, if you want a tumor to shrink, would not be a good thing because it will enhance and grow and expand whatever it touches. So sometimes you have the north node associated with Jupiter and the south node with Saturn in this respect. So that's a kind of specific set of ideas from the Hellenistic tradition. Again, just briefly summarized, and then finally we have the Indian tradition with Rahu and Ketu, and that's probably the most sophisticated.
You have Rahu as the head of the demon that thirsts for immortality, steals the nectar of immortality, gets it stuck in its throat before it can be ingested. Gets its head cut off by the Sudarshan Chakra, the weapon of time, from Mohini Murti. So that's the Vishnu avatar. Uses the weapon of the wheel of time, cuts off his head. He gets the nectar stuck in his throat, and that means he's perpetually wandering and hungry, and sort of incapable of satiating the lust and desire that he has. That is sort of like misguided, or it's like misplaced.
The nectar of immortality itself is a gift from the gods, but to want to steal it and take it for oneself in the duplicitous way, that's wrapped up in the problematic nature of desire and lust that the North Node represents in Indian astrology. You always have to stay aware of. At the same time, there is this sense that the soul can't help but learn through its desires and its experiences that unfold because of its desires. And there's something you can't, you just can't skip over about that.
So Raphael also seems to genuinely represent the evolutionary perspective, where the desires that lead the soul along a path of learning can't be ignored or completely dismissed. They have to be honored and acknowledged, and lived out and learned from. The south node of the moon, K2, in Indian astrology is interesting as well because that's the detached body that the head gets cut off from of the demon, and the idea is that the Sudarshan chakra, the weapon of time, if Vishnu personally kills you, it grants you moksha, which is kind of a benefit of getting murdered by God. Sorry, that's sick. It's a little, it's a little dark, but anyway.
So okay, so k2 represents moksha and detachment and release from the material or physical world, but often also with a problematic context. The achieving of moksha is happening through something a little transgressive, and so while the South Node can genuinely represent spiritual things and sort of detachment from the world and diminishment of worldly things, similar to the Hellenistic tradition, it can also represent some kind of unhealthy escapism. Remember that this is a demon that's trying to steal the nectar of immortality, and moksha is adjacent to that desire, right?
And so we can think about K2 as the problematic ways in which the soul achieves some kind of liberation, for example, heroin as opposed to meditation, but also the ways in which diminishment and loss materially, because of our egos, because of greed, because of the nature of impermanence and suffering, often leads to moksha, but often through a path of diminishment of worldly things that is not easy for any of us, so there you have it. There's K2 in a nutshell. So all of these are just reminders about the different ways that we've had of talking about the South Node throughout our tradition.
Now I've got five things to watch for specifically when we think about this upcoming South Node solar eclipse in Leo. These are not so specific to Leo as much as they are solar eclipse, South Node. Remembering that the Sun is the ruler of Leo, and so we have a very kind of a doubling of solar themes: solar eclipse and the Sun sign. The first thing to watch for on my list with this eclipse and the eclipse that will be taking place in early August of 2027, also a solar eclipse in Leo, would be the theme of harvest.
So, because the sun and Leo together have so much to do with things like legacy, purpose, ambition, the feeling of being special or unique, what sets me apart in some divine or what do I want to call it? What sets me apart from others in terms of the life I'm here to live, the reasons that I'm here, and think about how many people come to astrology saying, "What is my purpose?" So that's a solar question for the most part, and when we have lived enough life to have lived into some of our purpose and learned from the living of that purpose, we get to these inflection points where we say, "Okay, I'm harvesting, I'm reaping what has been sown around the topic of my life purpose.
So, Leo South Node solar eclipses are really powerful when it comes to what is what have I learned about the path I've been walking? What are what have my motivations been? What have my intentions and ambitions been? And what have they taught me about myself, about life, about what's ultimately important? And so, harvesting insights from the paths that we've been walking, the purposeful, heart-centered path that we have in life, whether that's through a career or our relationships, there's these moments where we say, "I've been on a path, and now that path is delivering some pretty significant feedback.
And so the harvesting of wisdom around life purpose lived to date, and also that could mean that life purpose is shifting because insights gathered and harvested from the living of life, the experience of life, may result in us wanting to shift directions or change course in some way. But there's a real sense of harvesting from the big, broad kind of universal topic of life purpose. For a lot of us, that means that this eclipse can be pretty very personal, and that's very much like Leo, and very, very broad. Like it's natural right now to be reflecting on like what have I learned, where have I been, and where am I going? In a you know kind of big sense of like what's the hero's journey of my life.
Now, number two on my list would be the relinquishment of attachments. The South Node always helps us to relinquish attachments. What kind of attachments probably are best observed through the whole sign house of your chart, we'll do horoscopes next week. There's a relinquishment of attachments that comes, I think, through the South Node eclipses of any kind. Attachments are, let's broadly say that life isn't possible without attachments, the spirit, soul, or animating force of consciousness to the body. Our attachments to friends and lovers, our attachments to creature comforts, our attachments to our animals.
You know what I mean? What isn't something that we grow bonded or attached or connected to, and a lot of things that we get attached to are not so good for us, especially the things that keep us from seeing more of truth, more of divinity, more of who we are, more of who others are, and one of the reasons that we keep our hearts, we try to protect our hearts from seeing more and knowing more of reality. It's because it's scary. It is scary to. It's scary to do that work of opening more because we get comfortable, and comfort is a big deal.
Security at existential psychological security is a really big deal for us. So when we talk about relinquishing attachments, we're not saying like the universe is coming along to just like kill your darlings, you know, take away things that you love, and just you know, bite a stick and get through it. You know, it's a little bit more like saying there are barriers to you growing in heart and soul, to growing in love, tenderness, compassion, understanding, and those barriers will be removed. In fact, the process of aging and dying in Indian philosophy is naturally said to as we age and we grow closer to mortality, many people naturally see unhealthy attachments fall off as the reality of their own impermanence grows closer.
Things that really matter, life gets a little simpler and a little sweeter for many people as they age, just naturally. But eclipses also provide us existential and spiritual aging opportunities. Let's call it, and I'm talking about age now, outside of time in soul time, whatever that is. Is there an opportunity right now to let go of things that we're attached to that keep us from growth? And it's especially the things we go, no, please don't take that, you know, please don't take that thing. That's something I can't do without. But we can because we think we can't do without our bodies. But we will let go of them. They will be relinquished.
All attachments will be relinquished because everything passes. This is a basic teaching in Buddhism as well. So solar eclipses with the South Node are very powerful insofar as they can really open the heart and magnify more light, more love, more compassion. But often through powerful moments of relinquishment, especially with the Sun as the ruler in its own sign in Leo, the relinquishment of attachment is likely to open the heart, but also where there's an opening of the heart, there's often the need for courage and boldness and strength inwardly to face what we fear releasing, so that the heart can open.
Number three is inward turning. Although we have Jupiter in the sign of Leo, and we're thinking a lot about this as a big, you know, a theatrical sign, a sign that likes to be on center stage or a sign that exudes light. This is a very inward turning kind of South Node in Leo year ahead, with Jupiter and the South Node together. A lot of the work of this next year will be about the light that's internal, the light that we have, that we abide in, that is, you know, prior to and after being on a stage, and that's really important.
It's an important part of our development to, you know, be the audience that applauses our own heart, and to be the performer in a space that is unseen, because our integrity and the sense of really being able to occupy the role we play in life is only as good as the degree to which we've been able to occupy that role when nobody is watching, when nobody is applauding or approving or celebrating us. But do we still have that sense of you know? I think about my girls and how much they light up when they receive my and Ashley too, but my affirmation, my love, my encouragement, my support, my joy.
They just ooh, they just you know they get bright inside, but we have to do that for ourselves, and we have to tap into what that feels like apart from really prior to the stage of life to the external, or we have to be back in the internal as much as we are in the external as a kind of back and forth, so that it's real. So there's an inward turning quality here that says tend to the heart. What is inside the heart, and how do the inside and outside need to have a conversation? In other words, how do I, how do I, how is my light in the world reflecting the inner quality?
Because there can be a big show, but a sadness or an emptiness or a depressiveness inside, and if the external and internal aren't lined up, there's going to be work on the internal that this eclipse brings for all of us. Number four is an otherworldly emphasis that Leo and the Sun bring that sense of transcendental purpose. What is bigger than this lifetime? If you want to think about it in terms of legacy, there's not many people on Earth that don't think about carrying on what their ancestors did or being part of a movement or values, or making the earth a better place, or being a steward for the environment.
People care a lot that they live for something beyond this simple lifetime, whatever form that takes. And my wife's family has a lot of pride in their Italian roots, and they all take trips to Sicily, and they go you know they. There's a sense that they're part of something that's bigger than this lifetime that exists in their ancestral past. Ashley just went to Italy to feel into those roots herself, and I saw how much it meant to her, and then it gave her this sense of carrying something forward. Pilgrimages do that for us, by the way.
When I went to India twice on pilgrimage, both times it put my life into being in these temples, these beautiful incense-filled temples, and meeting the pujaris and hearing talks and seeing shrines that are you know hundreds and hundreds of years old, 1000s even. It really, for me, it gave me a sense that my life on planet Earth is a part of a bigger story. So any kind of I'm living as a part of a story bigger than myself that's spiritual, metaphysical, ancestral, and my heart is charged with the sacred duty to contribute.
You know, like where was it? I'm thinking of Dead Poets Aside. You know, what will be your verse? Like, what verse will you contribute? So, that can be very spiritual, ancestral. It can be about stories that are carrying us, that our heart gets to participate in. So this emphasis on the otherworldly. Now, the otherworldly emphasis can also be about the afterlife, spirit world, and importance placed upon dreams, so there is something just generically otherworldly about the South Node in general.
By that I mean just like anything that is not as tethered to the material preoccupations. Like I've got a job, I'm in the world. How is my team doing? You know what my kid has a dentist appointment. Just there's like worldly stuff that we all have to deal with, and then there's this, you know, you kind of lay on your back and you sort of look up at the stars and what is it all? Where does it all come from? This eclipse is going to be pointing us in in that direction a little bit more, and then finally, we have the potential for old karma to be resolving itself, but as it does, it opens the start of a new chapter.
And this is the, you know, kind of paradox of a new moon solar eclipse with the South Node. The new moon solar eclipse tends to open up new pathways, new ambition, new sense of direction, changes that feel total and complete somehow. It was like the new, the chapter change in a book. But it's being born of the resolution of old karma and wisdom that's being harvested right now. That's really ripe and present, so new wisdom, new chapter. All right, friends, that is what I have for you today. I hope that this was useful, and I hope you will have a great rest of your week. And we'll see you again next time. Bye.
