What do you do when life hands you a disappointment that seems to deflate everything you were hoping for?
This weekend, the Sun meets the South Node in Leo, bringing an acute moment of reckoning with the recent solar eclipse.
It asks you to look at where you have been crushed and where you might be wasting your spirit on diminishing returns. Forced to ask: what is actually worth living for?
The South Node points toward liberation—not by escaping, but by finding the middle way, investing deeply without clinging to the fruits of your labor. This is the heart's true karma yoga.

Hey everyone. This is Adam Elenbaas from Nightlight Astrology [https://nightlightastrology.com/].
Happy Friday, everybody! Today we're going to take a look at the Sun conjuncting the South Node of the Moon in Leo this weekend. There are some things to watch for that are quite important, given that it was the new Moon that formed around the South Node that just created our solar eclipse, and so now the Sun is meeting that south node, and this can be an important first inflection point for the recent eclipse that we experienced.
So we're going to look at today. I'm going to give you a list of things to watch for. Today's episode is going to be a little briefer than usual because, strangely, there is some there is a piece of our house that needs fixing behind the purple wall. I know it sounds crazy, but like they're going to be in here today fixing something, and so I'm getting kicked out of my office. So I have a little briefer time to record, not the usual, but it's got it totally came up randomly. So this was the only time they could do it. Blah blah blah.
Anyway, before we get into it, remember to like and subscribe, share your comments, your reflections. It helps us a lot. You can find transcripts of any of these daily talks on the website. That's nightlightastrology.com. Brief promotions today, so that I can get right into it. Head over to Book a Reading, click on Readings with Adam. You'll see my new Oracle reading that I'm really excited about.
It's a new reading that I'm doing that combines your birth chart with a specific topic or question that you want me to look at. In addition, I use Tarot or the I Ching, possibly Horary. In addition to the Natal chart, this has been really fun for me. I've designed these from scratch using the tools and languages that I know best. I really think you'll enjoy it. So check that out. They're going to be limited in their availability. They've gone very fast.
They'll probably be available maybe one more week, and then I'll have to shut it down for a little while so I can catch up. But anyway, check those out. Go to the events tab, click on annual retreat. We are taking a annual pilgrimage now every year to get together as a community and work on the spiritual core of our practice as astrologers. This retreat, the Oracle Within, is taking place next August.
The early bird sale is happening right now until October 1. We're gradually filling up. We're about a third of the way full. Plenty of time to join us. It is going to be a very beautiful transformational experience. You can see the documentary film we made from our first retreat that we took this summer. It's there on the page. Everything you need to know. There's different options for lodging and everything.
So if you have any questions, though, feel free to email us info at Nightlight astrology.com. Finally, if you go to Community Quiet every day at Nightlight, we have free meditation in the morning. If you want to join us before I create my content for the day, share meditation with all of you guys. So, if you want to be part of that, it's a cool thing to experience. Really great community that's been forming around that.
Okay, let's turn our attention to Nichepso. It's our official astrology software program. The guys are coming out on Monday for a live stream to tell you about all the updates. 20% off is the affiliate code. You get that affiliate code. It's 20% off perpetually. So check that out. It's in the comments or description of the video. All right, so here we are, Friday, August 21, and you can see that the sun is just one degree away from the south node of the moon.
I'm using the true node, but you might be using the mean. Either way, you'll see that the conjunction comes together tomorrow, Saturday, August 22, and then the sun crosses into Virgo on Sunday. That means we have a weekend of Sun South Node, the Sun South Node. Now, if we back this up to August 12, we're going to see that there was a solar eclipse in Leo, about 10 degrees off from the South Node of the Moon.
So, some some people I know were able to actually see the eclipse, depending on where you were in the world. We were able to just barely see a little bit of it here with our little cutout tool that we made. I know you probably guys you guys know what I'm talking about. Anyhow, but now we have the meeting of the sun with the South Node, which can be a particularly powerful moment in this cycle. Now, this is also made powerful because we're just under a week out from the lunar eclipse, which comes after.
So, new moon solar eclipse, often followed by a full moon lunar eclipse. That lunar eclipse is taking place in Pisces, and the lunar eclipse is happening on the 28th. Do I have that right? Let me just double check. Might be the well. We get it down to five degrees. It is the 28th, depending 27th into the 28th, depending on your time zone. So I want to review some things that you could watch for over the weekend, and thinking about these themes as carrying over from the eclipse on the 12th through right now, but right now might be a particularly acute moment with respect to any of these themes.
Number one, crushed spirits and recovery from a crushed spirit. Crushed maybe a powerful word, but what I mean is, have you? Just felt really deflated, like oh my god! You just feel beat up by life, or you don't get the job, or you go through a breakup that you thought was really maybe this was the one. I think the South Node and the Sun in Leo will often together they'll bring up the feeling that like geez, you got to be kidding me! That really kind of crushes my, dampens my spirits, crushes my spirits, deflates me, makes me feel like a deep level of disillusionment or disappointment.
However, there it's unique how in those moments you essentially have a choice. You you say to yourself, okay, I accept. I'm not going to wallow in this. You know, recently we did another Leo episode where we talked about self pity, feeling sorry for yourself-a very leonine thing to do. One of the shadows of Leo is feeling sorry for ourselves. And I think the choice that we have right now with the Sun and South Node meeting. If you're dealing with deflation or disappointment, disillusionment, feeling like, oh man, that was that sucks, you know, just something like that.
The path of acceptance is the path that says, you know what, I am going to choose to see this as a meaningful, sacred part of my destiny, and I'm going to stay curious about what this disappointment means. When something isn't working, do we give up? Do we throw our hands up and curse our stars, or do we say, "I'm going to trust. I'm going to step into this. I'm going to open my heart, despite the feeling that I really feel like I want to close it. The vulnerability and hurt we feel when we're disappointed by something is real, but it's also real evidence that our heart is real.
Do you know what I'm saying? So, can we take this disappointment as evidence that I have a real sweet heart, and that heart right now needs me to say we're okay. I'm okay. I trust. I'm going to stay curious and open to why this is happening and to see what unfolds. That is actually the medicine of these moments, because when that happens, what we receive as the benefit or blessing is the wisdom of the heart, the beauty, joy, spaciousness, fulfillment of the heart that is not attached to results.
Easier said than done. I'm attached to results. You're attached to results. We all. How could you not be? But in time, we also know that every time something doesn't go the way you want, and you just accept and say, "I'm still okay inside, that what we're training ourselves to do is to let the heart itself be where we find the most joy, the most benefit, and that heart is unconditional. It's unconditioned. That's beautiful. So think about the opportunity that you have right now to say yes to the moment, even if there's a feeling like something was really disappointing, that's my first thought.
I hope it's helpful and doesn't sound trite. If you really are dealing with a lot right now, I'm sure it could. So maybe that'll make more sense in a you know in a couple days or weeks if eclipse season has brought some disappointments. But keep it in mind because you are okay. You're going to be okay. That's my encouragement. Number two is deepening wisdom. The sun and the South Node together can be so illuminating. We can see what really matters and what really does not.
The South Node points us in Indian astrology to moksha, liberation, enlightenment. I want to read you something. Let me pull it up. So this comes from a book called *The Heart of the Buddha's Teachings by Thich Nhat Hanh. I love this book, and he's talking about the Heart Sutra. It's obviously Leo rules the heart. The Heart Sutra says that there is nothing to attain. We meditate not to attain enlightenment because enlightenment is already in us. We don't have to search anywhere. We don't need a purpose or a goal.
See, that's the thing: is that when we have these deep disappointments, or we don't know where we're going, or we feel that our life lacks purpose, or we suddenly feel like we're not as special as we used to be, or something like that, or we don't feel special at all-we feel like we've never been-we don't need a purpose or a goal. That's pretty radical. We don't practice in order to obtain some high position. In aimlessness, we see that we do not lack anything; that we already are what we want to become, and our striving just comes to a halt.
We are at peace in the present moment, just seeing the sunlight streaming through our window or hearing the sound of the rain, we don't have to run after anything. We can enjoy every moment. People talk about entering nirvana, but we are already there. Aimlessness and nirvana are one. Now he's using the word aimless. I think. In a way that's a little provocative, but there can be such wisdom in a South Node Sun conjunction where you go, "What's really important, and what is a waste of my time and my spirit? Where am I setting myself up for disappointment?
So, think right now about what is the heart's wisdom about. What is really actually important in this life, in this very short life. Number three, what lasts and lives beyond. Now, look, we are going to live for something. You can't just most of us are, as I like to say, not going to go live in an ashram or meditate 24/7. But being mindful and being present are-it's like a cultivation. I like. I think about the sand mandalas that are made and then swept away. Have you guys ever seen those before?
What are you building of your life that can be built mindfully? That's precious and beautiful, knowing very well that it will be swept away. When we put it into perspective, in other words, what is actually worth living for? You know, ideally we would all just sit and listen to the rain. You know, but it's like you are going to live for something. So, what is worth it? What is the sand mandala that's worth Making number four, healthy detachment.
The South Node is associated with detachment from the material world, detachment from material investment, and so forth. So, what is what does healthy detachment look like? Because there's unhealthy detachment as well. Unhealthy detachment, I think of as you know when I had issues with drugs, escapism. Like life is hard, so let me just detach. But between you know escapism and getting way overly involved in something that is completely impermanent, there has to be a middle ground. Buddhism talks a lot about the middle ground. A lot of spiritual traditions talk about the middle way.
What is the middle way? Can I work in this world without being attached to the fruits of my labor? How do you do That I have a lot of respect for people who can be deeply invested in things they care about, some form of service, some form of trying to make the world a little better, or trying to serve the people they love. If you're a parent, and also knowing that all of it will pass someday, there is a good sense of humor that people like this.
It's like the dead giveaway that someone is doing the best they can and cares, but is also not getting overly attached. They see this bigger eternal picture. I find frequently that I know that I'm with those kind of people, my kind of people, I guess I call them, because there's a good sense of humor, a good sense of humor that's kind of like, yeah, it's all fucking absurd. That's me anyway. That's my dark sense of humor, and you know that they're giving it their best to care for the thing that their dharma, whatever they do, whatever they serve.
Maybe it's a music teacher, or maybe it's someone who runs a company, or is doing some great charitable work, or maybe it's someone who's you know just doing something really simple. I've met some very-I'm not kidding when I say this. I've met some incredibly wise bartenders in my life who don't drink, and I'm not saying you can or can't drink, whatever. I've met bartenders who make a good living who don't drink, and who are like sages for a lot of people who are drinkers, I think you know the archetype.
If you've ever met a bartender like this, it's an archetype. Who's to say that isn't an amazing path in life, right? We we have all of these ways of categorizing what we think is worthy or unworthy, or noble or not, especially in our own heads about ourselves. But can you find something you love and do it, but do it with some, on like not being attached to the fruits of the labor. This is karma yoga, by the way. All right, my hats off to all the beautiful people out there doing interesting things that we don't, you know, we don't celebrate in, I think, a sort of celebrity and fame obsessed world.
I say that because I I really appreciate like one of the things I love most about my job working with people is I get to hear stories about a lot of people's humanity. It's a lot. More interesting than I don't know. Like I love hearing about once you really hear someone's story and you really get into it. People are interesting, man. All right, last on my list is diminishing returns. It's very easy to find yourself thinking this thing that once gave me life and light and happiness, or some degree of success, or notoriety, or popularity, or anything that gave me sunshine, is like it's not doesn't feel so great anymore.
It's just not giving me the same thing it used to, and so some revision or adjustment may need to be made. Diminishing returns and looking at what is something giving me, and is it life giving or not? In any kind of evaluation of our personal integrity and sense of how we walk our talk, very South Node Sun in Leo. I recently gave up a few hobbies I have that are not like I wouldn't call them my. I'm tempted to call them worthless, but let's just put it this way: I really wanted to deepen my studies of my guitar, and I'm trying to model for my kids investment in their hobbies that are lifelong companions, like music.
Their kids take music lessons and and reading and art and you know learning and stuff like that. And I'm like, well, if I have mindless things that I'm doing and my kids see me doing them, and then I'm telling them they ought not to be doing mindless things, like watch TV, for example. Then, like, what am I doing? And so, I cut out a few. It's like as these eclipses have been happening, and we've had all this South Node, Jupiter, Leo energy coming through. I'm like, what am I doing? Like, I'm. I need to.
I, I handed the management of my Instagram account over to my team, and I chucked a few other habits that are really just time sucks, and they're not doing anything for me that really speaks to my heart, like my creative self. And because I eliminated that time, I have more time to study music, and now my kids see me making those particular sacrifices and looking like, well, these these activities actually don't give me that much, and I'm gonna and I don't have to make a big proclamation about it.
I don't have to be like, see what Dad did. I just do it. I share with them that I'm excited about it. They see it, and I notice naturally that they take an interest in the things that are substantive to them, I'm sure all of you out there who are parents or who have people that look to you, if you're a leader of a staff or whatever, like when we make these choices, and like I could easily justify having a few throwaway hobbies to waste my time with.
Who's to tell me I can't waste my time, you know what I mean? And I would get offended, like I would say a year ago, someone was like, "Why aren't you doing this and playing music? I'd be like, "I can waste my. I work a lot. I do a lot of meaningful work. I do spiritual work. Blah blah blah blah blah. But it felt like no, right? As soon as the South Node and Jupiter got together in Leo, it was like there are a few things I can do to create more space in my life for things that really deeply nourish me, and I know they do.
And I could step into them more if I just let go of a few things that are that have diminishing returns. Do you know what I mean? Why not? We're here for a short time. Why don't we take the adventure of doing, you know, doing some hard things that truly make us feel better if we take it seriously? This will make me like playing music is gonna make me feel better than a few little hobbies that are big time sucks that are totally mindless for me anyway.
Just like, and I won't go into them because I am embarrassed and ashamed. But you all know what I'm talking about. Scrolling was you know just like an easy one. I was like, hey, I can creatively curate content for my Instagram and get off from it, and have my social media manager handle the curation of that creative content, and it'll keep me from scrolling. And that gives me like probably half an hour at least more a day with my kids.
And when they see that I did that, and I can just mention it, not in a proud way, but just like, hey, I did this. It has an impact, and it has an impact on me. Anyway, not telling you what you ought to think or do, but hopefully it illustrates what this South Node Leo energy is about. Do the brave thing and feel better about yourself for doing it. It doesn't have to be a big grand thing. It can just be like. I know what I need to do. My heart knows who I am. Let's be about it.
So, all right, that's it for today. Little shorter episode because there's something in the wall that needs to be fixed. Gonna crawl through my cloud. Little do they know they're going to fucking Narnia. That's where that closet takes you. He's gonna get in there. I'm gonna lock him in. Stephen King movie. He's in the wall. That's so demented. Okay. Anyway, I hope you're having a good one. We'll see you again next time. Bye.
