The South Node is where the crystallization of insights about karma and attachment tends to happen—not because we desire more, but because we begin to relinquish what no longer serves the soul. In Virgo, that means releasing the need to perfect, control, or critique your way to safety.

Hey everyone. This is Adam Elenbaas from Nightlight Astrology [https://nightlightastrology.com/].
Today we're going to talk about Mercury moving into the sign of Aries, Mercury moving on to the zero degree marker of Aries. And we're going to talk about that in light of the fact that the south node is currently in a Mercury ruled sign. And so the potential for a kind of karmic release right now is actually very strong.
The South Node is always moving along through a sign, and you can always track some of the karmic developments around the north and south node by looking at the ruler and what the ruler is doing. And when the ruler of one of the nodes does something more pronounced or dramatic, that often translates into more acute karmic experiences.
In this case, we're going to talk today about the South Node, what it means, what the South Node in Virgo might mean, what Mercury moving on to zero Aries might mean, in light of it being the ruler of that South Node in Virgo. So that's our agenda for today.
Before we get into it, remember to like and subscribe as always. Give us a little thumbs up. Drop a comment, subscribe if you're not yet subscribed. All that really, really helps us grow and sustain what we do as a company. You can find transcripts of any of these daily talks on the website. As always, that's Nightlight Astrology.com.
A few promotions before we get into things today. First, let's start with the fact that we have daily meditation community quiet, every single day at Nightlight. Go to the events page, click on community quiet. The schedule is there, the free Zoom link is there. You can join us Monday through Saturdays for normal meditation. Sundays, we have meditation followed by some group processing.
It is a great free offering that we have at Nightlight, trying to make astrology and spirituality a closer marriage, really, so that this community can become more intentionally about spiritual growth with astrology day to day. So just want to make sure you're aware of that. If you're not yet aware of it, it's been really nice to meet a lot of you there.
Anyway, go to the book of readings tab next. You're going to see new tab: readings with Adam. After a few years of stopping my schedule of readings, I've only been doing horary readings. I'm now back open for readings because I'm finished with my book. So I'm taking a little time to get back into doing readings.
These are all recorded reports that I do, different styles and specific delineations. I spend some time just getting to know your chart, researching it, and then I form some delineation points for the type of reading. It has some talking points, and then I record myself giving you a condensed version of that report. Love and relationships. Nodes of the moon. You can check them out.
They're all there. If you can't afford a reading with me, you can also check out readings with our staff. Need-based astrology readings have flexible pricing points. You can meet with someone over Zoom and have a real face-to-face conversation, if that's more your style. So there's some options there for you, and flexible pricing points so that everyone really has access to something sacred.
So you go to the book a reading tab. Read the page is there now. Before, when I was advertising this, it wasn't yet there. So you can scroll down and see the different types of readings. Horary readings are still there as well.
Anyway, there's a monthly webinar this month. Let's go up there. We'll hit the Events page. Go to monthly webinars. Can see the schedule. April 23, Thursday night, I'm talking about the sun and the ancient philosophical meaning of the sun and how the sun pairs with every other planet in your birth chart. That's a real deep dive. If you want to come join us for that, register, you get the link. If you can't attend the webinar, you get the recording. So that's a good deal.
There we have, I think three or four. I'm always losing track of how many rooms we have. I think it's four or three rooms still available now on the retreat, which are roommate style rooms you can share, and we have one room that's a single. Anyway, those are still available. The annual retreat tab under the Events page, Mexico retreat in June. That's going to be a fantastic time to study and learn astrology, really do some healing work on ourselves.
So that's it for promotions. Today, at the end, you'll hear me talk about the year one program that starts in June. There's an informational video at the end of today's talk that will tell you all about our first year program in ancient astrology that starts in June. If you want more information about that course, you can stick around later. There's need-based pricing for that too. So we have flexible tuition in case you need a budget-friendly option to study astrology more seriously.
Okay, well, let's turn to the guys. They are coming out April 22 at 10am Central time. We got the date established, so mark your calendars for a live stream. 10am April 22. What day of the week is that? That's a Wednesday. So that'll be next week for you guys. As I'm recording this, you guys are going to see this next week on Wednesday. Good Q&A with them. They're going to do a tutorial for beginners. If you want to check out the niche episode software program, I'm an affiliate. The link to use the affiliate discount on your subscription is in the comment section or the description of the video.
Okay, well, when we're looking at the transit, here we have a basic, basic transit to look at. It's nothing special. Just Mercury entering Aries should normally not be something to write home about. An ingress of a planet into a sign is not the world's biggest news in astrology. It happens pretty regularly. Mercury goes through a sign in just several weeks.
But when Mercury enters Aries, it hits that zero degree Aries marker. There's a few things that make this hit a little bit different. One is the fact that zero Aries is the ignition point of the zodiac. It's a very, very powerful degree where things tend to get started. Another way of thinking about tropical signs, sometimes we call them cardinal signs. The word tropical comes from the word Tropos, which means to turn. When planets hit the zero marker of a cardinal sign, a tropical sign, events tend to take sudden turns, pivots. The script gets flipped.
When planets hit the beginning of a cardinal sign, especially zero Aries, which is a fire sign, the sign of Mars, Mars is co-present. The exaltation Lord the sun is present. Saturn is present. Neptune is present. And that zero degree marker is where Saturn and Neptune conjoined in February. So we have a powerful level of astrological activity taking place in the sign of Aries, a reiteration of the Saturn-Neptune dynamic at zero Aries, one of the most powerful degrees of the zodiac.
And the little hidden nugget here is that the south node of the moon is still in the sign of Virgo, which is a Mercury ruled sign, which means the south node, which is intimately involved in the unfolding of certain karmic dynamics in our life, is hosted by this very powerful ingress of Mercury into Aries. That's what we want to talk about today.
So in order to do that, what I want to start off doing is just talking about the south node of the moon, and then talking a little bit about Mercury in Aries and how the two may work. And then I've got a list of five things to watch for. This zero degree Aries moment will last just a couple of days, but as it does so, Mercury will hit Neptune, it will hit Mars, it will hit Saturn in the next week. So the next week for Mercury is a big week, and a week that is also hosting and sort of disposing the dispositor for the south node.
So what is the south node of the moon? Well, in ancient astrology and philosophy, it has a slightly different meaning than modern evolutionary astrology, but they're not totally unrelated either. In ancient astrology, the ebbs and flows of the moon can be mapped in a basic cycle. When the moon rises above the ecliptic and goes upward toward the Pole Star, toward the north star, that rising above the ecliptic, the path of the sun, the sun's kind of belt line which defines the zodiac, is said to be rising up, and that's the North Node. The point at which it crosses is the North Node. So it's an astronomical point.
And as it crosses going up, ancient Western astrologers said that fortune was rising, so it's associated with things like Jupiter and Venus, gain, growth, fertility, abundance. Generally, when the Wheel of Fortune is swinging up, it's sort of like the image of the cup filling up with water and spilling over. That's not to say that the North Node is just generically good stuff. For example, you don't want a tumor to grow and become fertile and abundant. You want a tumor to shrink and diminish. Not everything that grows is necessarily positive, in other words. But the general meaning of the North Node would be gain, increase in fortune. Fortune is the material world and things that grow within it, often with a kind of benefic connotation.
The south node is where the moon crosses that path going downward. It's like a serpent. It snakes around the path of the sun. When it hits that ecliptic line of the sun going down toward the earth, that is associated with moving toward the southern horizon, or the southern plane of the earth, you could say toward the earth. The downward crossing was associated with diminishment and decay in winter and the malefics Saturn and Mars, which were associated with death and diminishment and old age and disease and decay and things that are not so pleasant in the world of fortune. You know, the cup's getting empty. There's a sort of generic meaning that is a little bit more difficult.
Now in Indian astrology, the meanings are similar but different. The north node is associated with increase, but also with appetite and with desire. Because what do we generally desire in the material world, in the world of things that grow? Money, power, sexual experience or satisfaction or wealth or a big wardrobe or fame or success or mastery or love or whatever it is that we want in the material world. It's associated with appetite, with hunger and with desire in these ancient Eastern traditions, for sure.
So in that sense, the north node of the moon is associated with the things that we desire that pull us forward into perpetual lifetimes. Now that is all for the sake of spiritual evolution. We learn because of what we desire. I desire this. I go find out what that's all about. I have an experience, and then I learn from it, and then I refine my desires, and I gradually come to refine my desires until my desires are purely spiritual. That's the idea. Anyway, purely spiritual would mean love, compassion, bliss, peace, patience. I desire nothing but the Buddha. I desire nothing but the Tao. I desire nothing but God, Goddess, like that. So experiences gradually refine our consciousness. Now this is not different from what modern evolutionary astrology tells us.
On the other hand, the south node of the moon is all about the processing and relinquishment of attachments. This is why it's associated with Moksha in ancient Indian astrology, Moksha being release and liberation from material entanglements and attachments. And this is why it's also associated with things that we have desired, that we've gone off to experience, and we've realized the limitations of those desires and come to a pretty deep spiritual understanding. Like if you have the south node in your marriage house, you've probably learned a lot about what is and isn't realistic and what can and can't be satisfied in the realm of relationships. In your lifetime, you'll know more than most people the limits and burdens and stresses and realistic versus unrealistic desires and attachments and entanglements and burning them off. And hopefully finding more spiritualized relationships is something that the south node in the house of marriage might represent, for example.
But the thing about the south node to keep in mind is that it's always a place where the crystallization of insights about the material world, about karma itself, and about entanglements and attachments tend to crystallize, and often that comes because we relinquish attachments. So there's that theme of diminishment or loss of material, quote unquote, things. The South Node is less about desire and more about relinquishment of desires. It's a little bit more like a monastery, the south node. The north node is a bit more like, let's go into the city and do something tonight.
Now that does not mean, in ancient astrology, one is not better than another, and the North Node is not exactly something you need to go do to spiritually evolve, but it would also be unnatural to try to deny or repress your desires, because they will be your evolutionary teachers. So somewhere between sort of lionizing the North Node and not repressing it is where we need to land with the North Node. And spiritually speaking, with the South Node, it's not just regressive. The South Node is where a lot of ongoing, continued realization about the importance of spirituality will take place in our lives.
All of that is just to say that the South Node right now is in the sign of Virgo: lessons and themes around humility, around purity, around criticism and perfectionism, around grace and forgiveness, around flow versus trying to control things, around anxiety versus trust. All sorts of Virgo themes are present right now as a place of karmic processing and as a place of relinquishing various attachments and deeper or deepening spiritual insight. So you can think about that whole sign house of Virgo in your chart as containing a ton of lessons right now about these kinds of things.
Now, alongside of that, what we want to think about is that the ruler, or the host, of the south node in the sign of Virgo is Mercury in the sign of Aries at that zero degree Aries marker. There's a potential for that karmic processing and crystallizing of karmic insights, or the relinquishment of attachments all around Virgo kinds of insights or lessons. There's an opportunity right now for that to be greatly accelerated, like pressing the gas pedal on some of that karmic processing and understanding.
So I've got five things to watch for given that combination. What should we watch for in the next week with respect to maybe a heavier or deeper, more interesting level of karmic insight or realization than you might think? I find that these kinds of transits often hit hard, and people are scratching their heads going like, oh, what is it? And then they'll tend to assign it to something peripheral, because we don't always pay attention to things like this, but they're actually a big part of traditional astrology.
So anyway, the first thing on my list is the themes of fixing, criticism, and communication. To me, the impulse or urge right now to fix something: Virgo is really good at identifying what needs improvement, and karmically right now a lot of the lessons may center on this. You may feel the urge to correct something, to fix something or improve something, because that's where the karmic work is right now. And I would say that Mercury at zero Aries can greatly accelerate the urgency or the momentum or ability to act on something that needs fixing, clarifying, organizing, purifying, to fix something, to improve it or make it better.
At the same time, the South Node in Virgo with Mercury at zero Aries could result in saying things that are fast and harsh and sharp in a spirit of criticism toward yourself or others. And it may not be the most useful, or it might be useful but not kind. So discernment and the urge to fix or clean or purify something could become a little aggressive and impatient and maybe outwardly directed or even projected. Could become aggressive toward other people. You don't want to be aggressive toward yourself. You don't want to be aggressive toward other people. Be very careful of a hyper-critical, perfectionist, fiery impulse that's coming through now. If that's directed toward making authentic improvements, but with care and sensitivity as well as action that's ready to go, that's fine. But just be a little bit careful: are we serving a process of fixing something in a spirit of truth and courage and action, or are we getting impatient and maybe a little bit belligerent and highly critical?
Number two would be the idea of something pure versus something raw. Virgo likes for things to be pretty pure. There's a great lesson in the sign of Virgo that's about the pure beauty of life. I mean, Virgo is a sign that doesn't get enough credit for how enjoyable it is. I think people think of Virgo and they're like, oh, I'd like to have that person on my math project or something. But actually, I'm always reminded when you're in Costa Rica, everyone says Pura Vida, and it means just pure life. Celebrate the pure life. And I think there's something that's really important about purity. When things are clean, it's like that feeling when you go on a run or you get that moment of breaking a sweat when you're running and breaking into that runner's high zone. Do you know what I'm talking about? It's cardio. It happens with dance probably too. For me, lifting, it happens. And you get that, and then when you're done, and you feel like your body's settling in, life feels so pure. It feels so good to be in your body, and that feeling of just pure life flowing through you.
This is a great moment to access or tap into the motivation toward purity, or the motivation toward something clean or healing or something that burns off stress. At the same time, there's a very raw quality to Mercury at zero Aries that could feel messy or a little chaotic. And the impulse or desire to control something: Mercury in Aries is not so keen on being controlled. So you could see how the emphasis on purity, the flame of purification at Mercury at zero Aries with Neptune pretty close by, could be very powerful, something very purifying like the runner's high and then the clean, pure feeling of life and health that you have afterward. That comes to my mind. But so too does someone who's really resistant to something flaming and intense coming through, because it's a little unhinged, or it's not so easily controlled, or it's a little bit more spontaneous, and that might be difficult to handle. An opportunity for holding that tension, perhaps, is coming now.
The next one on my list is service and freedom. Virgo is very concerned with being a conscientious, helpful adult citizen of life. It's a sign that has a lot to do with the initiation between youth and adulthood. It's a sign that cares a lot about moving from a space of feeling somewhat innocent to feeling like an integrated adult in the world. It's a sign that sits on the threshold of summer, the end of youth, and autumn, the beginning of adulthood. In the seasonal mapping of life that ancient astrologers had, that sense of where do I participate? Where do I belong? How do I fit in? How am I useful? How am I a valued citizen, so to speak, without becoming subservient or without losing something of your own agency or your own interests or your own spark of authentic, joyful, spontaneous creativity. These are all tensions that Virgo carries.
But the care for service, the care for finding a way to contribute, is central to the south node in Virgo's karmic realizations. But Mercury at zero Aries tends to emphasize freedom. So if you need to withdraw from something because it feels enslaving or entrapping, but on paper it looks useful, you may find that Mercury at zero Aries says, I don't care if it's useful or helpful, it's making me feel sick. Or what do I want to say or do versus what do I think other people will grant me validity for with respect to things like my adult role in life, or my skills or my usefulness. Self-assertion and self-erasure, right? Those are a kind of powerful dyad with these two placements: South Node in Virgo, Mercury at zero Aries.
You also want to be aware of overcompensating because you've given too much, right? Too much obligation, too much stress, too much duty. South Node in Virgo with Mercury at zero Aries has to withdraw, reestablish freedom, not do things that feel too taxing. But then you can overcompensate and lash out and become kind of a jerk, thinking that you're doing nothing but claiming freedom. But it's actually a wild overcompensation because you don't quite know how to establish that freedom, and in the beginning, the way you establish it can be a little selfish and even harmful to others. So figuring out what does it look like to be free or to pull myself out of obligations and expectations and duties without burning bridges or looking like a jerk, even if it's something I really need to do.
Number four is the urge to purge. Look, I think Virgo can develop a tendency toward accumulation of details, of thoughts, of data and worries, and it can just get really overwhelming. And if the nervous system has been burdened by overthinking, over processing, over planning, over managing, over organizing, Mercury in Aries will sort of just need a mental detox, and it may not be very patient when it comes to how it needs that or seeks that. So just be careful, because there might be a kind of urge to release pent up energy, or what feel like mental blocks. Mercury can kind of just be like the middle finger in Aries: I just don't care anymore. So that urge to purge can be really useful, very healing, very purifying, but also can represent a moment where you've reached emotional saturation and mental saturation, and you're going to blow if you're not careful.
Now number five would be fragmentation to unity. Mercury tends toward fragmentation as a planet. Virgo can also tend toward fragmentation through the tendency to look at parts, deductive versus inductive, and Mercury can be paralysis by analysis. So that tendency toward fragmentation karmically as a subject right now, with Mercury in a fire sign, fire tending much more toward unity. Think, for example, of Jupiter as one of the triplicity rulers of the fire signs, versus Mercury in the air signs. So think about the tendency toward mental complexity and dispersiveness with a Virgo Mercury-ruled sign, also very practical and earthy in its dispersiveness.
It's almost like a junk drawer. When it gets to the worst of a South Node in Virgo and Mercury in Aries, it's a bit like the urge to just dump the junk drawer completely into the trash. The urge to purge again. But the idea behind it is that I need more unity. I need more cohesion. I need fewer parts. I may risk oversimplifying things that are more complex because I'm so sick of the feeling that complexity is overwhelming my brain or my life in some way. So the urge to unify things, or organize things so that they feel more unified and less dispersive and fragmented, could be happening on any level right now.
So those are my things to watch for. I think that this is going to last. If I had to drag it out, today is the 14th. So if you drag Mercury through Neptune, we're going to be looking at that tomorrow. If you drag that through about Friday, then it's separating from Neptune. But then by Sunday, Mercury will conjoin Saturn. By Monday, it's gone through the conjunction with Mars. So we have a little ways to go. Sneaky, big transit.
I'd love to hear your thoughts and how you're processing this or noticing this. If you wanted to do a little deeper analysis, you could always look at the whole sign houses of Virgo and Aries and look at how the topics of those two houses might be speaking to one another a little bit.
But either way, stick around, because next I'm going to tell you about the year one program. It starts again in June. It is a fantastic course. If you are feeling like it's not just curiosity anymore, it's starting to feel like a calling, this is for you. This is easily the best, most in-depth thing that I've ever created. We've been doing it 16 years. Thousands of students have come through the program. It is an awesome community container for healing and growth. So hope you'll check it out and come study with us.
We'll see you again tomorrow. Bye.
