What happens when the tender pull of home meets the hard edge of reality? This week, the Sun in Cancer squares Saturn in Aries—a transit that asks you to grow up in a single moment.
The Sun in Cancer wants safety, belonging, the familiar warmth of what you already know. Saturn in Aries demands courage, commitment, and the willingness to meet life as it actually is. These two forces are not at war; they are in conversation. The pressure you feel is the friction of becoming someone new.
This is not about forcing change or resisting it. It is about learning to sit in the tension between softness and strength, between the life you have known and the one that is asking to be born. The square is catalytic. It shapes us, strengthens us, and calls something new forward.
Join Adam Elenbaas for a reflective exploration of this transit—what it means for your chart, your relationships, and your own becoming.

Hey everyone. This is Adam Elenbaas from Nightlight Astrology [https://nightlightastrology.com/].
Happy Monday, everyone. Today, the sun in Cancer is making a square to Saturn in Aries. It's a powerful transit to start the week. We're going to talk about that transit today. I'm going to give you a list of things to watch for.
This would be helpful for you, not only today with this sun square Saturn dynamic in the sky, but also any kind of sun Saturn contact in your natal chart transit work that you're doing. Maybe Saturn is transiting your sun right now, so this ought to help you just learn more about this planetary combination.
Overall, there's a lot to look at this month of July. We have so many powerful transits, so we're sort of taking it one at a time. This week, we'll also be getting into some Jupiter and Leo horoscopes and revisiting that entrance of Jupiter and Leo, which we've covered from a variety of angles.
But I think now that it's kind of first entered and gone in, we'll return to horoscopes, which we did several months ago, but we'll return to those now. So, that'll be coming later this week as well. Anyway, lots to talk about before we get into it today.
As always, remember to like and subscribe, share your comments, your reflections, your stories. It really helps us grow. When you click the subscribe button, it's free to do so. Transcripts of any of these daily talks can be found on the website, that's nightlightastrology.com.
A couple of promotions for today, obviously, my book is The Oracle Speaks. Go to the shop page, click on my books, you can pick it up there, it's everything that I know about astrology like deliberately encrypted into story form. I feel that stories are maybe the best way to share things that are deeply philosophical and enigmatic.
Astrology is something that has plenty, there's plenty of textbooks, there are plenty of how-tos and tutorials and lectures and workshops and courses. I really wanted to share everything that I know about astrology in storytelling form, and that's what this book is about. Pick it up, check it out. I hope you'll enjoy it.
If you think to take a picture of yourself with the book and share it on Instagram at Nightlight Astrology on your stories or something like that, really appreciate that. Also, have a book release party coming out. Go to the events tab, click on book release party if you want to join me for a free online book release party this week, Wednesday, July 8, 5:30 central, 6:30 eastern.
We're getting together. I'll be reading from the new book, answering questions about it, talking a little bit about storytelling and memoir writing, giving you some basic principles to work with if you want to write some of your own stories, so I hope you'll join me for this again. It's free.
If you can't make the Zoom when you register, you'll get the recording afterwards. So I hope to see some of you there. The only other thing to mention right now are monthly webinars. Go to the events tab, click there, you'll see my talk on July 23 for this month is the dark side of astrology: malefics, eclipses, and retrogrades.
We're going to talk about what makes these some of the more difficult transits that we face, and why, and also, you know, what benefit and blessings there are in these often maligned astrological configurations. So, check that out again if you register, and you can't get the, you can't meet at the live time of the webinar, you get the recording, and everyone gets the recording, so anyway, check all that out.
Remember, every day at Nightlight, there's free meditation. Go to community quiet, you can find the link to join us seven days a week for daily meditation. It's free, it's just sitting quietly, there's no bells, whistles, techniques, dogmas, doctrines. We just get together and sit quietly with one another, and it is very helpful to pair this kind of practice with your study of astrology.
All right. Well, on that note, thank you for letting me get through my promotions for the day. I'm going to bring Necepso up on the screen. This is our official software program at Nightlight. Now, it's a wonderful program. You can find the affiliate link to get 20% off this cutting-edge astrological software in the comment section or the description of the video.
It's 20% off, and it never goes away when you use that code. It also helps us fuel everything we do when it comes to our affordable pricing and things like that. It's a way that we have of supporting our work here at Nightlight. So, yeah, we'll have the guys out to talk about Decepso more again later this summer.
Anyway, let's take a look at the aspect forming today. Here's the sun at 14, Cancer, Monday, July 6, squaring Saturn at 14 Aries, and so the two moving through a square. You would have been feeling this yesterday, maybe even Saturday, as the sun was approaching the square.
Now it's passing through today, very exact. We'll give it another couple of days of separation, so if we push this out, especially right, right here, Tuesday, July 7, the moon will pass through the conjunction with Saturn and reconnect in the last quarter square, the last quarter moon with the sun, and so you're really going to be feeling this today, July 6, and tomorrow, July 7.
Give it one more day beyond that, things start separating a bit more, fully separated by Thursday, July 9, but I'd say today and tomorrow, the sixth and seventh of July, are the most intense moments for this transit. Now, it's fast moving, which means it's not like the most dramatic transit in the world, but it's a strong one, and so I've got a list of things to watch for today.
In my mind, this list would be useful for you if you've got Saturn, and if you have a sun sign, for example, or a moon sign, or a major planetary placement, your ascendant ruler, or something like that, in Cancer, Libra, Capricorn, or Aries, you're going to be getting the square from Saturn, and so anytime that you can learn more about how squares, oppositions, major transits from Saturn work, that's helpful.
But specifically those of you who have the sun in one of those signs, you're going to be getting the conjunction square or opposition, while Saturn's in Aries. This talk could also help you think through that transit that you're probably already in the midst of, honestly. So, hopefully, there'll be benefit here for all of us as students of astrology, what to speak of the next, you know, 48 hours, all right.
I've got a list of five things to watch for. These are in no particular order, but let's start first with mentioning the fact that Saturn in Aries is in the superior position. It's like the sun in Cancer is walking into a house where something has been happening in that house, you're a guest, you're walking in, and Saturn in Aries has established whatever's taking place in that house.
So if that's you walking into a house with a, you know, like an abusive militaristic father, okay, Saturn in Aries, I'm obviously there's better sides to Saturn in Aries, but that could be one of them, or let's say you're walking into a house where there's been just a lot of toughness and Mars like activity and not a lot of gentleness and care and sensitivity.
Well, the sun in Cancer is walking into that environment and maybe having to respond to something that's been really fiery and hot and dry, Saturn in Aries that needs a little warmth and gentle soothing and moisture, so if Saturn in Aries is a sunburn, then the sun in Cancer might be aloe, you know what I mean.
So just starting with the idea that right now Saturn in Aries is establishing the scene of action that the sun in Cancer is walking into and responding to. I have that in mind behind each of the things I've shared today, but let's start with the first one. This one I just called setting a new stage.
So because Saturn in Aries establishes the action, it establishes the conditions that the sun in Cancer has to respond to. Then there you could think of Saturn as external pressure. Saturn, a good word for Saturn is pressure that demands some kind of adaptation, and so the sun in Cancer is walking into a situation where it has to adapt to something new.
The newness comes from the fact that Saturn in Aries is in a sign that brings newness, so some kind of external pressure could set the stage for something new in life that you have to adapt or respond to. It's when circumstances suddenly arise and you go, "Oh, wow, that's new, that's different. I have to adapt and respond, and it might be a kind of pressure that forces you to have to respond." That's the Saturn in Aries.
You could also say that there's a new reality that's coming about that is coming about before we feel emotionally prepared for it. So, quick, sudden emotional adaptation that's not always easy. I think, for example, of my kids who need serious amounts of transition time between doing things, we're not dissimilar, even though we're adults, we need transitional spaces.
This isn't the greatest transit for a transitional space. It could be something a little hard, fast, difficult, you know, an external pressure, a new reality emerging, and we feel like we instantly have to adapt, and it feels a little harsh emotionally, or you could say that the tension comes from having to mature in response to some kind of circumstance that we didn't choose, but the only answer to get through it is to have to grow up a little bit overnight.
That's the potential, I think, stressor of this. But anyway, you could also just say that events might be happening that are redefining circumstances, and we're having to adapt and respond, and there's a tension between the fiery, hard kind of unbending hot Saturn in Aries and the very warm, moist, life-giving kind of gentle sun in Cancer.
So those two are an awkward pairing, and yet their pairing might be happening at the outset of a shift of some kind that's going to, it's where it's a new reality we're stepping into, and when I say new reality, I know that that language can feel really dramatic and big, but usually what we're talking about in a transit that this quick is something pretty subtle.
It could be a shift of circumstances in your workplace that will change the field of engagement going forward, but it's not like you're losing your job, it's not like a big promotion, it's just some shift that you go, oh, wow, I don't really love that, but I have to adapt to it, so when I say a new reality, it really can be a little subtle, but that's what we're training our eyes and arts to be able to feel and respond to.
The reward of astrological living is enhanced sensitivity to meaning and experience, because what we want is more intimacy with meaning and experience. So, anytime I say a lot of these transits are like two days long, so just keep that in mind. It's not like the earth-shattering changes for most of us, unless you have a planet that's caught up in the exact space of, say, you know, 13 to 15 degrees of a cardinal sign or something.
Anyway, number two, you guys know I've got to mention solar figures, passing or testing of solar figures. The sun signifies leaders, rulers, fathers, mentors, coaches, any kind of central organizing figure authority or structure, and Saturn often marks endings or aging or succession or retirement or mortality, and so what we want to watch for when Sun and Saturn come together are the decline, the death, or even the transition of solar figures.
This could also mean the testing of solar figures, existing authority, or people who represent some kind of central organizing force or figure can be questioned and put to the test somehow. It can also be that there's a period of transition in which it's not clear who will succeed who or what comes after something that's passing.
That often happens when someone is suddenly diagnosed with something serious, and you have to quickly figure out what we're going to do after this person leaves, and they haven't left yet, but the awareness that something has to come after is now suddenly apparent, and you have to deal with it. That's a metaphor. I'm not saying everyone's dad is going to die or something, it's really dark.
But yeah, examining how to transition after an ending and being aware of an ending and knowing that you have to adapt to it, that's a very sun in Cancer receiving the superior square from Saturn in Aries. Now this can also just bring up powerful dynamics within your relationships to authority, fatherhood, vocation, or calling things like that.
Remember, Saturn is in the sun's exaltation in Aries, so the sense of vocation or calling or mission and frustrations, blocks, limitations that come up and sort of test you, test your metal, test your sense of direction, and how are you going to respond to something like that. Well, the number three on my list is creative crystallization.
So, when I think about creative crystallization with these two, I can't help but laugh, because when I had Saturn, I mean, granted, it was Saturn opposing my son, but when Saturn opposed my son, I had kidney stones, and that was that sucked. I was like giving birth to a baby rock, most painful thing I've ever experienced in my entire life, easily, except for maybe breaking my arm, but yeah, terrible.
But the thing that was interesting was that there was a lot of creative crystallization happening alongside of an actual crystallization that you know was painful, so Saturn in the sun can, for example, dampen the vital spirit or vital force, or can present health challenges, but at the same time, Saturn in the sun can be about creative contractions, like labor. The contractiveness of creativity is very sun and Saturn.
Now, at the same time, your creative inspiration with sun, Saturn can run up against limits, or deadlines, or the requirements of doing something really well, you can't do something sloppy, and you also can move things from a potential idea or inspiration into concrete form, and Saturn will ask questions about what lasts, what endures, that that is creative in nature.
And also Saturn in the sun is great for editing and revising things, because the vision is meeting with a reality principle. It's like, well, how does this take shape and actually become successful? Saturn will help the sun go from ideal to the editing, revising the kind of disciplined refinement of the creative thing that makes it a diamond that crystallizes it makes it beautiful, but formed.
And also any kind of constraint, frustration, or limitation can actually become a source of creative inspiration. A lot of creative creatives know this. When you run up against the block or limit in life, creativity becomes the invention or the solution, so it's innovative solutions to psychic blocks that are often the description of creativity, right.
All right. Well, the next one on my list is the burden of care. Caring for things is very sun in Cancer. Cancer will naturally protect, seek nourishment, safety, connection, bondedness, and Saturn in Aries, on the other hand, will potentially introduce demands, blocks, limits, frustrations that interrupt that soft, sweet, safe, cozy homeostasis of Cancer.
And so any kinds of obligations, limitations, blocks, duties, difficulties that come up, and that require a lot of extra effort, emotional nourishment, care, devotion, protection, sensitivity. In other words, Cancer loves to be caring, but when Saturn comes into contact with the sun in Cancer, there can be a real burden, or necessity or discipline or duty or some kind of extreme circumstance that requires the care.
Oh my god, I have to step in and do something. Someone's in the hospital, I gotta take the day off, I gotta go see them because they had a kidney stone. I was at an astrological conference in Michigan when I got the kidney stone, and I had to go to the ER in the middle of the night, I'm not kidding you, I managed to get to the elevator, I managed to get to the lobby.
I got out to the lobby desk, told the guy I needed an ambulance, I didn't know what was happening, and literally collapsed onto the floor of the lobby, and then I got into the ambulance, and we went out to the hospital, passed the kidney stone throughout the night, but then if you've ever passed a kidney stone, you know that sometimes it comes in waves. There's like maybe one big and then there's like little particles that keep coming.
So anyway, passed the kidney stone on, got like two hours of sleep, went back to the conference, taught what's crazy. Then went back up to my room, passed shards of glass the rest of the afternoon. Taught later on, it was crazy. It was absolutely wild. It was very sun, Saturn in the sense that something had to be done.
I was there, I felt like, well, if I can teach, I'm going to try to, but a lot of the lesson of that transit for me was also like, in hindsight, I probably just should have been like, I have a kidney stone, I can't participate, seems simple, but my cap moon was like, no, let's do this the hard way.
But I think there's something about these two that, that it's like the hardness of Saturn and the softness of Cancer, and genuinely we, I think all of us probably need more softness than we need more hardness. I mean, some people need more groundedness, Saturn can really help with that, but a lot of us struggle to stay in a soft, sweet, but boundary place.
I think these two planets can help us find that, and that burden of care can become easier when we practice it over time. And I think Saturn, Sun, and Cancer here will maybe give us that insight. Anyway, the final one is strength through resistance. Look, squares are of the nature of Mars, so Saturn and the Sun together are creating friction and resistance, and a bit of conflict.
Saturn brings up obstacles, but with the square to the sun in Cancer, it can make them feel awkward or difficult more than another obstacle, like we're all used to facing obstacles, we don't need astrology to give us obstacles, right, but when the sun in Cancer is dealing with the obstacle from Saturn in Aries, it can just feel a lot grosser, you know.
Our feeling body can be like, oh, this is really inconvenient, this is hard, this is harsh, this just doesn't feel good. And yet, courage and strength and fortitude, while maintaining sweetness and softness, as we were just saying, can actually be developed, cultivated, and matured through meeting a transit like this with sustained, careful, devotional, sensitive effort.
Have you ever, if you're a parent out there listening to this, have you ever had a day where your kids are just testing you, and for whatever reason, on that day you don't lose your shit, you know, you don't come out of your center, you just sort of burn through the pressure and friction, and you do it by staying in your heart, you relax into it, and it keeps pressing, and then it starts pressing louder, and you're like going to relax even more, and you just keep responding that way, staying calm, staying cool, staying collected.
By the end of the day, you go, man, I got an A today. I got an A for the day, man. I might get an F tomorrow. I might have gotten an F last week, but today I got an A, because when shit ramped up, I cooled down. I just stayed calm. And what is it, cool as a cucumber? I think that's the phrase.
So when emotional reactions can be tempered by the necessity, by the need to be accountable, by the need to be emotionally mature and strong, emotionally present, and still soft and sweet. Wow, that's a spot that most of us would like to get to, isn't it? I'm strong, but I'm kind, you know. I'm well boundaried, but I'm open hearted.
So, let's take that challenge, right? Let's be cool and sweet together. All right. Well, patience can become a greater strength than force, that is the takeaway, I think patience can be stronger than force, patience can become a greater strength than force. Yeah, I like that. So, let's end there.
I think this has been a good exploration. Hopefully, it gives everyone a feeling of, you know, what we're working with today. But remember, we're in the midst of a Mercury retrograde. We're coming down the home stretch of a moon cycle. We're going to have our next new moon in Cancer.
A lot of transits are taking place this month, we've got Venus about to enter her fall and hit the South Node in Virgo, a Venus square to Uranus. We've got Jupiter-Pluto opposition, we've got the Sun opposite Pluto, a major Jupiter Cazimi with a full moon conjoined Pluto and opposite Jupiter. I mean, it's a wild month, so we'll be here unpacking it.
And hopefully what I hope and I pray is that when you listen to these talks, that it's not just okay they're helping me survive the wildness of today or tomorrow, but that they are giving us insight, just like studying astrology gives me insight. Look, these patterns are natural. There's nothing abnormal about what we're experiencing, but the patterns of astrology become so validating and so healing to know that these experiences are not a mistake.
And our conscious awareness and relationship with them saves us from confusion and ignorance and reactivity and fear. So I just hope that this place, this talk, these talks are a blessing to you. They give you something good, and that they help you find your heart a little bit more today. That's the prayer. All right. Hope you're having a good one. We'll see you again tomorrow. Bye.
