Saturn Is Now Retrograde in Aries — A Secret Teaching Nobody Knows About

Today we are going to talk about Saturn turning retrograde in the sign of Aries. There are some really interesting ancient doctrines about Saturn retrograde that we're going to visit today, and maybe a few takes that you've never heard. We all know that there are some basic things retrogrades represent, like revisions or delays or reversals of circumstance, but there are some very specific and interesting doctrines about a fallen malefic Saturn turning retrograde that you probably haven't heard before, and so I'm going to present those to you today, as well as a number of other considerations about Saturn retrograde that I think you'll find useful, and then we'll do some brief horoscopes, just reminding you of the place that Saturn is located in your birth chart right now, and hopefully all of this will be helpful and interesting.

So what I'm going to do in order to illustrate this is I'm going to change our display, and I'm going to take out. We're going to take out everything but the sun and Saturn. Now the reason for doing this is to hopefully illustrate something of the synodic cycle of these planets, the Sun and Saturn. So here you can see, as we are at the start of this week, Tuesday, august 4, that the Sun is about to trine Saturn in the sky. So it's a good time to be thinking about this this configuration, and it's a good time to be thinking about Saturn's retrograde, but let's back this up a little bit.

What I want you to notice is that last week, Sunday, Saturday into Sunday, we have Saturn turning retrograde. So here is the Sun entering the sign of Leo in mid to late mid to late late July, I should say, and as it does, it is now in a trine configuration with Saturn. So let me take out Epic Pen here and show you, the two planets are getting together by trine. So you can see the trine forming between the two planets here, and this is by whole sign, of course. But every time that the Sun and Saturn get into the trine position, you know right around that time that Saturn is going to change directions, and this is the same with Mars and Jupiter, what we call the superior planetary cycles, the synodic cycles of the Sun. With those planets, have little indicators that tell you when their retrogradations and direct stations, retrograde and direct stations are taking place. So it's always right around the trine, and here we can see that this is the most recent after the most recent conjunction because the sun moves faster. So you can see that if you just kind of use your planetary logic, the sun's proximity to Saturn should. You that they conjoined in Aries, right? They conjoined when the Sun was with Saturn recently.

So this means that the first station after that separation is always the retrograde. Now we know that Saturn's you can see the little S there, which means Saturn's turning retrograde. Now Saturn's going to take its retrograde. Now this started basically at the beginning of last week, so we're catching up on this a little bit after the fact. But the point is that Saturn's station means that Saturn's barely been moving, so the retrogradation is just getting started now, as Saturn is gradually, very very gradually picking up speed, and as that trine perfects, it struck me as a good time to review on the significations of Saturn's retrograde. So, if we take this forward, what would you anticipate that it's not going to be until about Sagittarius season that we see Saturn turn direct? So that means we have you know a good a good long while here. Let's take this forward by weeks, and we'll watch Saturn go into Virgo, and then when it comes into Libra, then we're at the sort of full moon moment of the synodic cycle because the Sun will oppose Saturn. This is going to be a very powerful time always when the Sun is opposite Saturn. Then we go through Scorpio, and we get into Sagittarius season. And what I want you to notice is now that they're configured by trine, we'll watch and we'll see that little S appear above Saturn in the wheel. So Saturn's just passed through the trine, and it's going to be there after that we see this. There, there it is. There's the station of Saturn, the little S appears, and now Saturn's direct. This is about december 12. So what does that mean? We're dealing from August to December with Saturn's retrograde.

The retrograde of Saturn, we're going to take through the houses, so you can see exactly what's going on, and we'll we'll I'll put it on today's date with the trine sort of in the background, but I'm actually going to take Saturn. Excuse me, I'm actually going to take the Sun out, keep Saturn in. So we will I'll cue this up so we have horoscopes ready to go after we talk about some of the general meanings of Saturn in Aries today for our talk, so we'll do horoscopes at the end. But that's what we're looking at. So now, what I want to do is talk about some of the unique things that have been said about Saturn retrogrades. There are many different traditional sources throughout 1000s of years, and then there are some that are distinctly modern in terms of the takes on Saturn. The most common things that are said about a retrograde Saturn is that the retrogradation is going to make the Saturnian things that Saturn is doing.

That's a little redundant, but whatever Saturn is up to in your life, in that place in your chart that we'll visit with horoscopes later, it's going to make those significations more irregular, a little erratic, somewhat contrary, which means they will push in an opposite direction than you're used to them pushing. They'll be almost like consider the opposite perspective or a contrarian point of view. Now those themes can come up in so many different ways, but the idea is a kind of contrarian Saturn, contrary to what Saturn has been doing or whatever Saturn's nature is. You know, in hindsight, what you've been dealing with, say, since Saturn entered Aries, there can be repetitions of things, almost like having to repeat something, and this is true for all retrogrades. This is something that's been said traditionally about you know retrogradation in general, as well as delays. Okay, that's a pretty traditional retrograde meaning in general. It can revoke things that you previously had access to, or that you were previously committed to, you can kind of have this. There's a quality of what's the word revocatory. Does that sound right? And it can also be difficult for things to come to completion, which is why delays or obstructions or impediments are also common for Saturn retrogrades.

So if you think about Saturn in direct motion, we're thinking of Saturn being able to administer the affairs of the house it's in and the the karma, let's call it, that it's orchestrating in a steady way. And when it's in direct motion, that's what it's doing, and this can interrupt that steadiness or that smoothness. Now there are some very different doctrines in Hellenistic astrology and in Vedic astrology that we'll talk about here in a minute. So Vettius Valens, across the entire anthology, which is this famous text that he wrote, talks about retrograde planets as. Weakened, or capable of producing reversals and failures, and so none of that sounds very good, right? It's like, oh, geez, you know, incoming reversals and failures. However, it depends on what's being reversed and what's failing. If you were being saved from the worst because you had an ambition or a direction you were going in, but it fails and it actually saves you time, money, hassle. You'll probably be thankful for that. If you're trying to get something done and you are really attached to it and it's not working, or something gets turned on its head, you'll probably feel very frustrated. But notice that it is relative.

He says that even benefics, when retrograde, can Vettius Valens does says that they can act sort of like malefics in certain conditions. So the idea here is that retrogradation can take away a planet's capacity to bring its promised significations to to completion. He that now this is I'm I'm talking about specifically Mark Rey Leyley's translation of Valens, which is the text I used this morning when gathering my notes. The planet. is walking backward or receding, and it's not a part of the normal zodiacal order anymore. That secondary motion of all the planets, instead, it's falling back into the primary motion of the sky, and that's why it it appears as though it's walking something back, or something is receding, where something was going forward, and all of these, the the visual image of the planet falling into the primary motion is being treated symbolically. This means reversals, repetitions, withdrawals, contradictions, contrariness, irregularity, disruptions of normalcy are all appropriate symbolically for all retrogrades, but one thing that's that's interesting is that retrogradations can bring things to can bring things together that otherwise seemingly wouldn't be able to come together because of applications that are being made from a retrograde planet.

Let me just give you an example. Let's actually put. I'm going to put the chart back up on the screen. Here we go. Okay. I'm actually going to let's put all of the planets back in for a second and just demonstrate this. So, what I want you to notice is that, for example, the Venus opposition with Saturn. This Venus opposition with Saturn is going to come up. Let's see here. It's about what august 21. Now let me just point it out with my handy epic pen. So this is around August 20-th, august 21 thereabouts. The thing that makes this opposition unique is that Saturn is retrograde.

This means that both planets are moving toward each other, whereas typically Venus would be sort of moving into and out of Saturn, and Saturn's just sort of going along in its normal course. Saturn's moving through Aries, and Venus would have to sort of catch Saturn. But this dynamic offers a subtle variation. That subtle variation means that Saturn is moving toward Venus while Venus is moving toward Saturn, and that usually wouldn't happen. What that means is that when Venus contacts Saturn, there might be some way in which the symbolism of that meeting is unique to the fact that Saturn is moving toward Venus and Venus toward Saturn through a backward motion that would be significant when it comes to your love life or certain relationships having to visit things from the past. The meaning of many retrogrades when it says things from the past will come up is not just because it's retrograde; it's often because the planetary aspects that will be made while the planet is retrograde include the planet moving backward, as it were, through time and space symbolically toward a planet that's moving forward. This one moving forward, one moving backward, means that the meeting has this interest in different, almost like different timelines that are present. At least that's a symbolic possibility. Let's take another example. Let's say now that we're looking at let's say we're looking at Mars in Cancer. Mars in Cancer will make the square to Saturn right around august 31. This square. Right there includes Saturn moving backward toward Mars, while Mars is moving forward towards Saturn.

This means that all of the contacts with Saturn will tend to be of the sort that could could involve retrospectives, or repetitions, or reversals that Saturn is bringing to other spaces in in the sky to the Mars and Cancer space, let's say. That that little detail alone is important because sometimes people think it's again it's just merely the retrograde the backward movement that means that things from the past will come up, but it's actually the fact that forward-moving things have to deal with a backward-moving thing in the sky. So hopefully that that example is helpful. Saturn retrograde is you could say Saturn acting contrary to celestial or cosmic order, so something out of the normal bounds of Saturn can take place as well, which is why Saturn retrogrades are sometimes associated with things like heretics or black sheep or ostracization or alienation or withdrawal or leaving something or revoking something, because it's something. The idea is that something outside of the law or limit is taking place with Saturn, the ruler of the limit. So now Saturn already, because of its slowness and weightiness, is associated with things like delays and obstructions and confinement and old age, and things that endure the test of time, and so a Saturn retrograde can be a particularly grueling period of time according to this logic, where there's labor that has to be done again and again.

It's not the typical, you know, build things, do things over a long period of time, and Saturn sort of rewards you, which is true. Like Saturn seems to reward hard work, endurance, staying power, discipline, maturity, effort, perseverance. You know, working hard over a long period of time is Saturn-sanctioned activity, you know. But when Saturn is retrograde, it can really it can mean that that effort is not experiencing the sense of progress that it's used to, and it can feel almost like oh my god, I'm sliding backward, and there can be frustration that comes with it. All right, I know all of this sounds like a bummer, but there's one very interesting doctrine we're going to get to in a second. So, in the medieval tradition, when strength is being weighed according to all different dignity factors, retrogradation is usually seen as a strike against a planet's strength, but in practical terms, Saturn's retrograde can be unable to retain what is given to it, and therefore has to return it. That can mean retracting an offer. It can mean returning something, having to return something to the store, something that you received has to be given back. It can mean the reversal of a decision. It can mean again abandoning, revoking, or revisiting some kind of undertaking. And typically, these would be Saturnian things.

And so, the exploration of what is mature, what is wise, what is sober? What is grounded? What structures can endure and last? What am I building over the long run? What are the deepest, you know, moral and psychological lessons I'm learning that are really a matter of me growing up? So, and with Saturn, whatever authority Saturn represents in our life, it can sort of fail. The authority structures or the integrity of leaders or structures can somehow fail, and so we have to get back to we almost like we have to redo what is the foundation or the source of integrity with something, which is why this can actually be associated with redoing the foundation of a home, for example. In modern psychological terms, retrogrades are often associated with things like internalization and inwardness, and that's fair. But it's really not talked about that way in ancient astrology, for the most part. With with Saturn, there's difficulty preserving things while Saturn is retrograde. For example, if you're trying to put on weight, Saturn retrograde would be difficult in certain positions in your chart. Whereas if you're trying to lose weight, Saturn's retrograde may be helpful because unless you don't want to lose weight, right? Because. Because of the tendency for established things to start deteriorating, this is also why Saturn retrogrades are sometimes associated with the more rapid onset of degenerative conditions and diseases.

So, the the the things that are typically Saturnian that we like: longevity, staying power, boundaries, accumulated wisdom or wealth, or you know the the trustworthiness of certain institutions in our life. Those can be rendered like they could be weakened somehow, and then we have to go on a little adventure to either recover their integrity, build them back up, or reflect upon why something isn't working. William Lilly, in particular, who's a Renaissance astrologer that I use in my horary classes, he has a scoring system, and retrogradation is basically an accidental form of debility. But in many of his horaries, retrograde planets, including Saturnian retrogrades, can be about reopening a negotiation, or someone changing their mind, or returning to a former person or situation, or something like that. So there's a mix of of like general sort of philosophical symbolic meanings and then practical applications throughout the whole history of astrology. Yeah, in horary's Saturn being involved in the perfection of a matter while retrograde can mean that it gets done, but with some delays or difficulties or complications. Now here's where it gets, I think, really interesting. In Indian astrology, you have some of the typical retrograde meanings. Vacragati, I believe, is the Sanskrit. Vacra means crooked, bent, winding, indirect, contrary, or evasive. This is from one of my Indian astrology texts. A retrograde planet needs. Let's see where my sorry. I'm getting my notes mixed up. Ah, here it is. This is from the Kalyanavamran. I'm not. I'm not going to say that right. Anyway, it says a benefic, if retrograde, is strong and capable of conferring kingship. If a malefic is retrograde, it causes grief and purposeless wandering.

So that's interesting because in that text from the Indian tradition, the the kind of winding, indirect, contrary, or evasive nature of a malefic when retrograde is particularly difficult, but with a benefic, it can it can confer strokes of good fortune that come in unusual ways. Fascinating, right? But still doesn't get us into better territory for Saturn. I promise we are getting there. All of you are like Jesus, you're killing me. But here's where I think it gets really fascinating. We have where is it? Yeah. Okay. So in the falla falla depica, I think that's how you say it. There's a specific doctrine with respect to retrograde planets that means that a retrograde planet can can possess strength that's that's like exaltation, even when it's in a difficult sign, and so this basically the doctrine goes like retrogradation will make a planet extraordinarily potent, but maybe contrary or sort of erratic or unpredictable. So almost like, almost like it gets a bit Uranian or something. That's fast. That res that registers for me right away that a retrograde planet is a bit like a maverick or renegade and delivers kind of eccentric but interesting results. So, and he he this this doctrine says specifically that a debilitated retrograde planet can become more like an exalted version of itself. That's the doctrine that I find so fascinating. This is from Mantrasavaras.

I'm I'm I'm killing the the Indian pronunciation. Falla Depika. Anyhow, I found this one on the interwebs. This was not in, but I it it seems to be a very reliable source because it quotes lots of the portions of the text. Anyway, so this would mean, and I thought this was fascinating. I'd never heard this before myself, so this is new for me too. But what's fascinating is that would mean that Saturn and its fall in Aries, when retrograde, becomes more like exalted version of Saturn. I thought, huh, wow, okay, like, well, let's see. You know, that's my. I guess my response is like, I'll take it, but let's let's see. So, while there's a whole host of reasons to think that Saturn could get a little eccentric and bring up some difficulties, or you know, a malefic retrograde, ooh, but I think what I like about this particular doctrine is this interesting idea that a fallen retrograde Saturn could act more like an exalted Saturn. And here's the logic as far as I'm able to, you know, run with it and think about it. You have Saturn moving forward in its fall, in Aries, bringing up Sun-Saturn tensions basically, because the Sun is in its fall in Libra, where Saturn is exalted. Saturn is in its fall in Aries, where the Sun is exalted, and traditional texts tell us this is a part of the logic of these placements. So the Sun and Saturn are natural dyad.

In fact, I'm giving a talk at UAC this fall on this dyad, the Sun Saturn, because it's like the oldest dyad in astrology. In some ways, the entire language is is based on a kind of Sun Saturn dichotomy of of astrology itself. Anyway, if Saturn moving direct brings up these hard tensions between the sun and Saturn, then in a way, its retrograde in the same sign could bring up their harmonization. That's one way of thinking about it, or it could bring up if if Saturn. Oh God, I I had the most eloquent little example in my head, and now of course I'm just totally brain farting on it. But anyway, let's just run with it and say if Saturn moving backward in a sign that moving forward it's considered in its fall, then moving backward it would be exalted. I'm gonna test that out personally and just see how that that works. Oh, I remembered. Okay, of course, everything in my paradigm comes from. Isn't that funny how your brain does that? Like, where does it go and how does it come back? So, I was of course I think about a lot of things through the lens of rehab, sobriety, recovery. You know, all of those kinds of things because they've been a big part of my life, but when I think about someone going through, like if I think about an alcoholic moving forward as Saturn in Aries, I think about someone who is just falling on hard times. Their life spirit is being drained by the disease of alcoholism. They're making bad choices. They're not displaying maturity or wisdom, and maybe they're acting like a tyrannical dad or something like that. Retrograde. I think about Saturn in Aries going to therapy or rehabilitation, during which time they don't stop being an alcoholic, but they start recognizing this is what I am. I need help, and all of a sudden, this is an exalted decision, right? It's like a difficult, a difficult person with a difficult pattern recognizes it, wants to reverse it, and that is an ennobling decision.

You see, the thing about falls and exaltations that was on my mind is that they they enable they enable one another because it's like emptying out a cup in Taoism, right? The the cup will be emptied and then the cup will be full and then it will be emptied and it will be full. Exaltations were compared to the cycles of the moon by Rhetorius, and the realm of fortune itself, the wheel of fortune. So if something goes up, exalted; something goes down, depressed. Saturn in Aries retrograde is therefore a bit like the conditions one has to make or meet in a fallen state to become exalted.

For example, I've given this example recently: Mars in Cancer, Mars in Cancer for Lionel Messi, one of the goats of soccer, right, and or football, depending on where you're from, and when he was a kid, he had human growth hormone deficiency and had to take these painful injections into his leg every day of human growth hormone, so that he could grow. So when you think about Mars and Cancer, in that case, you're not thinking about someone who can't ever become the greatest soccer player of all time. You're thinking about someone who has to overcome something, and as they overcome it, they rise up. They go from a falling condition to an exalted one. So frequently, exaltations and falls secretly sort of contain one another. I've seen many planets in their fall lead to remarkable stories of of sort of redemption and overcoming things and rising up to great heights. That's because, and I've seen lots of people with exalted planets fall down. And William Lilly even says this. He says you have to be careful of exalted planets because they can be the pride that comes before a fall. So when a. Malefic like Saturn is retrograde. The point is that it could entail the beginning of a rise. See how that is sort of like that Indian doctrine. So when I found that, it just made sense to me. It just was like, yeah, that I totally get that.

So with that in mind, we are now going to take a look at your potential turning point, heroic. We're gonna look at your heroic rise from a fall story, and I'm gonna take out everything but Saturn. We'll get back to that because I sort of goofed this up. Here we go. All right, now I I have to come back. Let's go back to right now, and I'm gonna put this for today, Tuesday, august 4. Now I'm gonna put Aries on the ascendant. We're just gonna give you some brief horoscopic reminders of what space you might be considering a turning point that leads from something difficult to something exalted, a fallen state to an exalted state. Let's just play with that. Why not? It's kind of positive, isn't it? It's like, well, we could be, we could visit all of the confinement and alienation and withdrawal, and maybe we experience that. Look, maybe my positivity ends up being just some, you know, unicorn farts. We'll see. But let's play with this and see, see how how we do. All right, we're gonna go through this one one placement at a time. If you're an airy sun or rising, we're talking about falling on hard times and perhaps recovering, or some kind of turn of circumstance that could go from difficult to better, with respect to things like health, identity, character, personal psychological development. So think about that. What has been? What have you been learning? What have the hardships been, and how might that story be flipping now? Let's talk about Taurus. If you're a Taurus Sun or rising, this is in the 12th house. What unconscious dimensions of life have you been exploring and working through, and how has insight into those areas of life started to liberate you from something unconscious? The liberation may be starting now. After all, 12th house is called moksha, which means liberation. Let's talk about Gemini. If you're a Gemini, what kinds of difficult things or hard work have you been doing karmically, psychologically, spiritually around friends, groups, communities, social aspirations, dreams and visions for the future, long-term plans, and the people that you find you have the most in common with? Maybe there's a reversal taking if there's been some hard work around that are things ready to be redeemed, restored, or shift directions positively because of the initial phase of hard growth work that you've been doing.

All right, let's go to Cancer. Well, with Cancer, we're looking at the 10th house, the place of career or your public world, the the public sphere, your reputation in it.

If there's been some hard work in that sphere as to your character, your calling, your reputation, your professional dynamic, and you've been looking looking very deeply at how you show up in the world and what your visible or public identity is, then now is it a time for things to be restored or redeemed or healed, or are you ready for a turning point in what has been a difficult story. Well, for Leo, we're talking about the ninth house, which is the place of faith. It's the place of learning and higher education, teachers, travel abroad, and understanding truth. So, if you've been going through a crisis of faith or a crisis of meaning, if you've been doing some hard work around learning or education, how are things ready to be redeemed, restored, healed, or turned in a positive direction in that sphere? All right, we go to Virgos, and we're thinking about the eighth house. If you've been dealing with things like death, and and the having to be having to relinquish various attachments and going through that heavier transformational work of the eighth house. Are you ready for some healing, some redemption, a positive turn after an initial heavier period of work with those eighth house topics? Also, attachments to the subject of the eighth house, for better or worse, the things we owe and the things that are owed to us. As you've been exploring that space, what have the difficult lessons been like, and how are there? How are you ready now for a shift? Maybe there's a shift in momentum. Debts are being being paid off, and you're developing healthier relationship dynamics, or the give and take of your relationships is ready to be taken to a healthier place. So think about the reversal of Saturn here, maybe bringing some positivity.

All right, let's look at Libra. So, if you're Libra Sun or Rising, this is in the seventh house. What is the hard work of your relational your relationships been like? What work have you been doing? What limits have you been hitting? What heavier stuff has been taking place? What have you. Learning about yourself through your relationships, and now are you ready for a turning point after initial phase of hard work, maybe breakdown and you know kind of hitting some rock bottoms? Are you ready for things to turn and revise and review and redeem and restore, heal and move in a positive direction? So we could think about this as the beginning of a positive turning point for the lifespan of Saturn in the sphere of relationships. All right, let's go to Scorpio. For Scorpio, it's the sixth house. What kind of conflicts, hardships, hard work, sacrifice, and labor have you been doing that maybe has been quite exhausting? What has the trajectory been for things like health or work or the people you hire or that work for you, also just in general, what sacrifices have you been making, and how draining has it been? I could imagine this placement being pretty exhausting, even if you love what you're doing, even if the sacrifice is somehow worth it. What hardships have you been enduring? What conflicts have you been persevering through? Maybe it's time for there to be a positive shift of momentum and a positive change of direction within this place of the sixth house.

All right, we go to Sagittarius next. Sagittarius Sun or rising, we take it into the fifth house, place of joy, creativity, creative fulfillment. What have what has been impeding your experience of creative flow or happiness. What have the difficulties been around things like children, pregnancy, creativity, the arts, creative expression, or just the needing to feel fulfilled and joyful in your being? If there have been a lot of hard work around this, and maybe even shifting your relationship with joy and happiness, so that it's healthier or more mature. If you've been doing a lot of hard work around that, then that can even be like spending, eating, sex, like all the things that are supposed to constitute pleasure. It's just it's very and very internal and and kind of hidden part of ourselves in the fourth house. How has how have you been doing? What has the work been in that area? What has the work been on the internal sphere, private life, family, home, property, parents, parental karma, and ancestral karma? Whatever the work has been, are you ready for some kind of change in a more positive direction? Ready to integrate lessons learned and shift shift the story? All right, let's go to Aquarius. It's in the third house. What have you been learning about your own mind, your own psychology, your own opinions and ideas, your speech, your intellect, your skills, also things like siblings and the immediate environment that you inhabit around you, the kind of fish tank that you live in, and what has what has the hard work been there about your own nature, your own mind, your own your own way of communicating or expressing yourself, your intelligence? What is your ego adjustment been, and what is your relationship like with peers and siblings? And if there's been any hard work around these things, we might be ready for a positive turning point.

Maybe there's more confidence that's ready to be had after a period of really not feeling great about yourself. Maybe there's skill to be shown after skill has been developed. That was a lot of hard work to develop something. Maybe now it's ready to be implemented. But you can feel that Saturn here is maybe shifting things in a more positive direction if it's been difficult. Now, if you're a Pisces rising, last but not least, this is in your second house: money, finances, assets, resources, income, and expenditures. Anything that supports you, that props you up, and that is a direct support to your life, which is why we think about money. But interestingly, in ancient astrology, this could also have been your followers, like anyone who followed and supported you. If you were a public figure, could be found here.
